s02e05: Don't Be Afraid, Start the Tape:
With Louis' help, Molloy delves into a haunted memory of his own.
Based on Anne Rice's iconic novel, follow Louis de Pointe's epic story of love, blood and the perils of immortality, as told to the journalist Daniel Molloy.
Anne Rice's Interview with the Vampire, or simply Interview with the Vampire, is an American gothic horror television series created by Rolin Jones for AMC, based on the 1976 novel of the same name by Anne Rice. The series follows the vampire Louis de Pointe du Lac (Jacob Anderson) who recounts his life with his maker Lestat de Lioncourt (Sam Reid) and teenage vampire Claudia (Bailey Bass and Delainey Hayles) to veteran journalist Daniel Molloy (Eric Bogosian), accompanied by ancient vampire Armand (Assad Zaman). The series embraces the homosexual elements of Rice's work, which are only insinuated in the 1994 film adaptation of the novel. It is the first television series in Rice's Immortal Universe.
Interview with the Vampire received a series order in June 2021, after AMC Networks had purchased the rights to intellectual property encompassing 18 of Rice's novels, primarily The Vampire Chronicles, in 2020. The series was renewed for an eight-episode second season in September 2022, ahead of the premiere of its first season on October 2, 2022.
The first season received critical acclaim, with praise going towards the writing, tone, costumes, soundtrack, production values, performances (particularly those of Anderson and Reid), and chemistry between the two actors.
Adapted from Anne Rice's 1976 gothic horror novel Interview with the Vampire, the series centers on the life story of vampire Louis de Pointe du Lac, as told to journalist Daniel Molloy. An affluent black man in 1910s New Orleans, Louis is romanced and later made a vampire by the charismatic Lestat de Lioncourt. But the price of immortality is steep, and the relationship between Louis and Lestat is further complicated by the introduction of Lestat's newest fledgling, the teenage vampire Claudia.
Jacob Anderson as Louis de Pointe du Lac
Sam Reid as Lestat de Lioncourt
Eric Bogosian as Daniel Molloy
Bailey Bass (season 1)[a] and Delainey Hayles (season 2)[6] as Claudia
Assad Zaman as Rashid/Armand[b]
Ben Daniels as Santiago (season 2)[7]
Recurring
Kalyne Coleman as Grace de Pointe du Lac, Louis's sister[8]
Rae Dawn Chong as Florence de Pointe du Lac, Louis's mother
Chris Stack as Thomas "Tom" Anderson, the owner of the Fair Play Saloon, an upscale brothel
Christian Robinson as Levi Freniere, Grace's new husband[9]
John DiMaggio as Alderman Fenwick, a businessman looking to take advantage of Louis
Jeff Pope as Finn O'Shea, one of Louis's enforcers
Dana Gourrier as Bricktop Williams, a prostitute who works for Louis
Maura Grace Athari as Antoinette, a blues singer who becomes romantically involved with Lestat[10]

what actually makes me /feral/ is the fact that this is the first time that we’ve heard real lestat, actual lestat, not a projection or a memory, his actual words. and after everything he still wants to make sure that louis is alright and wants him to know that he loves him sorry i have to go throw myself under a bus.

Assad, Jacob, and Luke were effin amazing in this episode, especially Assad. He embodied Armand, one of my favorite characters in the books. And the fight scene, I just was shook and needed some popcorn. It was so good. It's by far my favorite episode.❤❤❤ So many quotes in this episode made me gag.😂❤

We finally got the full character of Armand. He's an amazing character and I've always loved him. He's so complicated and beautiful and vicious. The actor playing the young Daniel went toe to toe with Jacob and Assad and did an amazing job. I've never been a fan of Louie's but I really felt for him in this episode. Just an amazing episode!

Amazing episode. Very "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" They filmed the scenes in order, like a play, and Sam Reid came in to do the Lestat lines. This was the first episode they filmed for this season because Delainey had come on as Claudia not long before, and they wanted to give her some time to work on Claudia (which paid off in spades, I'd say). There is such an amazing time for television.

I actually do have huge sympathy for Armand, I might not if he'd been played by another actor. Assad has such a kind face and soulful eyes, it's hard to see him as a someone who's an just an inherently bad person or cruel for the sake of it.

Caught between wanting to give Armand a hug / shaking some sense into him. It's so fun hearing your theories :) I assume you haven't read the books and haven't watched the movie, since you keep wondering where Claudia is. This episode was fantastic and I loved every minute of it. I laughed, I cried, I was terrified. I hope we'll see more of this side of Armand, I prefer him this way (no wonder Ep.5 is Assad's favorite episode, he really got to shine in it). I have no idea what Daniel and Louis are going to do now, but I doubt they will confront Armand. It just wouldn't be a wise thing to do.

24:49 this part is just so crazy to me. For four days straight armand mentally, emotionally, and physically broke Daniel and louis down but the moment louis(a former pimp) tells him(a former child prostitute/slave) what to do he immediately Obeys.

@NyikoDoris
@NyikoDoris 15 дней назад
I have so many thoughts on their dynamic and how past lives come to inform their current lives. Still, I don't wanna clog up your notifications so what I will say is Armand has decided to "forgive" Louis at this point because he 'rejected' Lestat which is why he ALLOWS Louis to decide that Daniel will live. Armand ALLOWS Louis to play pimp because he knows that's the only way he gets Louis at least a little bit comfortable with being an ancient super powerful vampire's wife and Louis knows Armand craves someone else to tell him what to do and to serve and that he would only listen to Louis if Armand made the choice to, that little moment was them saying "I'm sorry"...this show is too good.

@@liliblue How could you have missed that? It happened in Paris on that bench when Louie erased Lestat and took control. We saw the switch when Louie became the Dominant one in the relationship. The moment when Louie said he was a bit wet. That was the moment their dynamic set. The moment Armand became submissive. As soon as Louie said he was a bit wet Armand reacted, shielding him then Louie called his Aruan

In the book, Lestat showed up in Paris just in time for Claudia's ill-fated trial. He'll be the difference maker in whether she lives or dies. In the books 📚 she wears the dress that iconic yellow dress symbolic of her being an empty and tragic victim.

Oh there are no innocents in this series 😂 Claudia was at one point, when she was human, but even when we first meet Louis he was pretty morally grey, and taking away his mortality just encouraged that to flourish. Everyone is a villain to varying degrees and everyone is a victim, which takes nothing away from their villainy.

This just reminds me of how Willow was affecting Tara's memories in season 6, obviously different circumstances and characters, but as a parallel, you know? Also, I didn't have the time to mention this in the previous episode but I find it so fascinating to me the idea of vampires who don't remember their human name, like Darla. We will never know what Darla's human name was when she was a sex worker dying of syphilis hundreds of years ago, does it matter? This show is actually making me want to revisit Buffy's vampires honestly 🤔

We saw the switch last episode. Right after Louie erased Lestat he became the dom. That was the first time that louie called Aramand by his slave name and Armand called him master. Louie is a pimp afterall so he is a master manipulator
@crazy-kuroneko
@crazy-kuroneko 15 дней назад
Arun is not Armand's slave name. It's actually Armand's born name, at least as far as Armand can remember. So Louis is talking to Armand's pre-trauma. But like you said "How Louis is the master here?" because these roles are just an illusion just so Louis can feel he has more control in his relationship, in opposed to how he was with Lestat. In the end of the day tho, Armand is actually the one who holds the real power. Armand who decides when he listens to Louis. Like, Louis said here, "Is it the gremlin or the good nurse today?" It's Armand who decides he want to be submissive.
@Nikopayne7
@Nikopayne7 15 дней назад

And Armand in this episode is effin beautiful, how can you not love him? Yes, he is messy, but if you read the books, you'll know why. He is such a tragic character. l deeply feel for him. 😢❤ Edited: And, before anyone says, how can you love a toxic monster. Well, how about you check yourself for loving that toxic, beater, cheater Lestat. And he also hurted Claudia too! And called her way worse names. So don't be a hypocrite! Because I seen comments like that, and it's tiring and double standard. But unlike Lestat, who beat the living crap out of Louis, Armand never laid a finger on him. He literally wipe his azz when he is messy, and wiped his memory for his own insanity from what happen to Paris. Nobody is innocent and nice, to be honest. Every character in this show isn't perfect.
@Werileyz
@Werileyz 15 дней назад
Yes, no character is perfect! Let’s not compare abuse though, what he did to Louis in this episode was clear and awful. Now I love Armand because I relate to his childhood/backstory (csa and exploitation victim myself), and I definitely feel with and for him, but I won’t judge anyone for disliking him or what he’s done as long as they’re not being hypocrites. Lestat and Armand were both awful to Louis (and Claudia)! But that’s kinda just what the story is. All of the characters are deeply, deeply flawed. The kind of characters you “love to hate” haha. :)

They pointed out Louis calling him Arun and then Armand saying yes Maitre' but what they left out is Louis is going back to his pimp persona and using the fact that Armand was fully emersed in the Dom/ Sub culture by his maker Marius. It's what he's used to. There are no hero , no villains , just monsters some worse than others but the same as humanity. 😊 This episode was brilliantly done by everyone involved writers, actors, directors, set designers, wardrobe. And this was the first episode filmed which was a genius idea , it allowed Assad to jump head first into Armand away from Rashid and become Armand. Assad is fantastic. Bravo I absolutely love that it was Louis that told Daniel " there a some stories that need to be told" and that were the first words of the series that Daniel said.

@Buzz0Killington 15 дней назад
@@lkcullen1918I think it’s important to keep in mind this is not the books, it’s the show. Things have been changed quite a bit. I think Jordan’s point is pretty right on. Armond is clearly submissive, whether or not it’s his maker’s doing, but he’s the most powerful vampire we know of (for now) and his preference is to be submissive to someone. And Louis, he is so practiced as a dom, from being a pimp, even though he’s clearly prone to being with bigger personalities than himself. He and Armand were both attracted to Lestat for the same reason. They’re together because Louis can give Armand what he wants but it’s not what HE wants. I think Armand senses that hence the conflict in their relationship.

@@lkcullen1918 Correct. Armand says Arun was his name when he was a slave in the bordello though he is not sure if that was his birth name he can't remember... that was his story at the museum he says his parents sold him to a ship captain. So this may be a revision for the TV series because we know in the books his name is Andrei, then Marius names him Armadeo to sound more Italian, then when he turns him ...Armand. But no matter the name he was a Sub in every situation and Louis knows this and uses it. So many manipulations, because Armand also uses it to make Louis feel powerful. Remember in the room in Paris when they were discussing the fire gift...Louis said it works for him when he's angry while Armand says he looks for vulnerabilities. So it's how they co exist. 🌷🌷

I'm so sorry Armand has never been more attractive I've been giving analysis for the past 2 days lol so sorry for the thirst comment. Also I've seen alot of people say"and nothing about armand" but to be fair Louis has only gotten up to the part when Claudia tries to escape there so why would Armand be mentioned? Louis is obviously telling the story to Daniel chronically. Also he did say Paris was his most formative when it came to his queer identity ( so with armand)

@winniefredk9978 15 дней назад
Also if this is Luis perspective not Armand why should we believe Lestat added "l love you Luis" when he was communicating to him through Armand.I think this still shows Luis is convincing himself that Lestat already forgave him and went back to Lovin him, that's my take.
