I heard nothing here about "Geddy Lee ranking best of Rush albums". I heard Lee talking about writing lyrics for the first album.

Seeing fly by night as his least favorite broke my heart.

Ask me again in a year and I might switch out Hold Your Fire and even Permanent Waves for Caress of Steel and Power Windows because it depends on my mood any given year lol.....but to me those are the top ten as far as overall quality and keeping me involved the entire record. What a great band. Possibly the greatest band of all time.

If you saw the whole show, you would understand the context of the ranking behind them. It only pertained to the first 9 records. Rush thru Signals. None of the later records were included. It is also of note that Geddy himself has said Power Windows ranks high on his personal list due to song depth and arrangements.

The 1st Rush albums I heard were, All the Worlds a Stage, 2112 and Hemispheres then Caress of Steel and Fly by night. Love everyone of them.

1. 2112 (if you grew up in the 70s, it was just a powerful wonder compared to anything else available...I will never forget listing to 2112 for the first time in 1977 on a reasonably high end stereo system...Rush was very rarely played on the radio, but everyone knew them by word of mouth)2. Farewell to Kings (probably Rush's most elegant record and the one I listen to the most now)3. Hemispheres (great bookend to FtK. And has Circumstances, which is a simple yet greatly under appreciated Rush tune.)4. Moving Pictures (Rush finally goes mainstream, but does it their way...what a triumph)5. Spirit of Radio (On their way to mainstream. Some great tracks, but not quite as clean a sound as MP)The remaining albums just don't have the songwriting consistency throughout, so pick how you will. These top 5 are Rush at their zenith of songwriting, progression, and creativity.

From 1974 thru 1985....RUSH was pure PERFECTION!!! And....HEMISPHERES was at the top of that heap!!! Nuff said.

I'm thinking they handed him these 9 albums from the "classic era" and told him to put them into best-worst order... instead of asking him to choose from their entire catalog. I've seen enough interviews with the band members where they rate their most recent works highly and consider some of the early stuff like Fly Be Night and Caress of Steel to be naive and at times embarrassing, and still in search of a signature Rush sound. I would assume a Geddy top 9 from their entire catalog would include Clockwork Angels, Presto and Grace Under Pressure.

I love Fly By Night.

There are a few albums that apparently didnt even make the list...."Presto" "Roll the Bones", others. What ive noticed is that the better, the more clever the Rush album cover, the better the music inside. Their album covers tend to reflect their inspiration within the music you are going to find inside. Im happy to see Permanent Waves as near the top, as i think this is Rush's 3rd Masterpiece, easily as good as "Moving Pictures", yet somehow overlooked by most fans. A song like "Different Strings" could easily have been put on "Moving Pictures", as this song is one of the band best songs.... It has it all, the melody, the mix, the structure, the guitar sound, the vocals, the lyrics....Its a masterwork. For me, i lost interest in Rush when the Keys became too dominate in their songs, and later when Alex left his Marshall sound and went with the digital copied tones i usually leave the band's music alone unless im listening to the first 5 Albums on good headphones. Amazing band, unmatched in their genre. It seems that everyone who plays professionally ither liked Queen or Rush, or both.

Power Windows is AMAZING. Idk why it doesnt get love.

Not gonna be a hipster here, Moving pictures is the best rush album. I've sifted through them all, though. Rush for me is more of a compilation band. Anthem, Subdivisions, Tom Sawyer and Limelight are my favorite Rush songs.

Is that Geddy's ranking? If so, looks like he had Signals near the bottom. I'm bitterly disappointed in that. It's by far their best album. I don't understand.

That's pretty much how I would order it today too. Maybe back in the 80's I would still place 2112 at the top because it and the first album is what originally got me into Rush 100%, and even though Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures was released in my tween years and I related to them more musically, I still thought even then that 2112 was the epic peak of Rush coolness. But now that I've all had these years to ingest everything and look back, Moving Pictures was just so perfect from beginning to end that I'd place it along with PW above 2112 today. What's amazing is none of these are bad or worse per se, just different and with great songs on all of them.

The "Rack" can only hold 9 albums, so are these the top 9 or the top 5 or 6 and the least 3 or 4?

I am sooo so glad they finally stopped blaring that intolerable obnoxious 80's shred guitar behind all their interviews. The older one with Neil Peart is so frustrating because its an awesome interview but I can't bear to listen to it.
