Great stuff, Marlon. I’m currently taking a step back from focusing on composition, and instead focusing on musicianship. For me at least, I find that when I work on my musicianship, whether that’s guitar or piano practice, I naturally start coming up with ideas that I want to turn into something more. But at this early stage in my composing journey, if I focus on composing I get writer’s block. So, for now at least, I’m putting gear purchases on hold. And I’m choosing instead to invest my time in my first instrument, guitar. And am currently learning piano. Investing in myself first, and making sure I’m staying solid with my instruments… and taking the composing journey slow. That’s working for me at least!
Double benefit! You improve your craft but spark creativity at the same time - even if you don't make a whole composition out of it. Feeling creative keeps you inspired to do more of that thing (which in your case is improving your musicianship). Sounds like you're on a good path!
Great video brother! I read a book not too long ago, which differentiates the so-called "motion" from "action". "Motion" would be investigating things, taking courses, thinking about gear, planning etc., and "action", is the thing that ACTUALLY matters - making music.
Exactly. I've also heard that there is a natural bursts of dopamine that people get from motivational courses/lectures/books...etc... and while the premise is that they'll take that motivation and move to "Action", what often happens instead, is they look for another motivational event/course, speaker because THAT is what gives them the high, not the "action" component.
Dave, my friend! Thank you so much. (for the beard props - and taking the time) I know you're busy with your channel, too! (Anyone else reading this that doesn't know, Dave also has an AMAZING channel with tons of great content).
Yes yes yes. Success surrounds us. All about the journey. Celebrate the small wins like learning new skills on your daw, software, getting accepted (or even acknowledged by a library), constructive feedback for revisons. I still forget to do this as always trying to move forward with next step 😩🤣. Great advice!!! Thanks Marlon
Thanks Marlon. I agree, but must say my course has given me the skills and knowledge when writing. Without it, I doubt I would have started getting library accept my albums.
You’ve been kind enough to share with me, your journey along the way with your education and I agree with you whole heartedly, it’s a well planned strategy that will serve you well. I don’t mean to suggest that higher education / courses and the like are not valuable, they are, and in fact, I myself went to school for Music Production. I simply mean the value of putting in the time "creating music" to get better, is often overlooked. I’m super happy for you and where you’ve come to be. You’ve put in the work!
Thanks for taking the time to create this video. All the topics you touched on are very essential to making a career in this industry. Stay warm & take care! Cheers!
@@MarlonGibbons You're very welcome! My pleasure! I like all your videos. I'm never wasting time when I watch your videos! Wow that's cold! Glad you're warm and cozy!
Great to see you back on here again, Marlon, and love your solid advice as always. All the best to you from here, and hope you're doing really well :-)
Relationships are the number one key to this game or any other game that you might wanna be in. There are more people the ever with great and good music out there. People are fight for 15 sec. placements. It's who you know period. These sups have tons of music to choose from. You need to find a sup or an editor. Ask around, see if your friends know anyone in the biz. Thinking that you will stand out from the crowd is crazy.
Subscribed! Enriching advice - thank you for time and effort of this video! I like that you mentioned all the key ingredients so each of us could go 'ummm that's something I can do better'. The best point - spend time creating and crafting - the best way to learn. I also appreciate the intelligent, helpful commentary. Wish you and everyone here all the best - stay warm!
Thank you for this, Marlon. In the learning process. I had just decided to stop stressing about marketing/ social media etc. and to just show up everyday and learn. Learn by being focused on recording/ composing. So if there is a problem with writers block, I have come up with small assignments. I make a map of a form. Or a chord stack progression for example. I call it my " snippet library. Loved this share today. Great to see you!!
"Snippet LIbrary" I love this. I too have lots of "scribble" ideas. And I think marketing/social media can be overwhelming at times. I know I've felt that too. Music is always a safe place for me, sounds the same for you. Thanks for tuning in, Jane! I appreciate the support.
Nicely done sir. Number 3 really resonates. Investing into Bettering your craft both the music and the relationship building to tie in your first point.
