CLIP DESCRIPTION:
After the band fractures, Mr. White (Tom Hanks) offers Guy (Tom Everett Scott) a few parting observations.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Tom Hanks made his directorial debut in this bright comedy set in the mid-1960's about a rock group and their brief fling with fame. Guy Patterson (Tom Everett Scott) works as a salesman at his father's appliance store and plays the drums in his spare time, fancying himself a jazz musician. One day, a buddy of Guy's tells him a local rock band, The One-Ders (it's pronounced "wonders"), are in need of a drummer -- they have Battle of the Bands coming up and their usual timekeeper has broken his arm. Guy agrees to sit in, but when it's time to play their best original, a love ballad called "That Thing You Do," Guy lays in a sharp, driving beat that turns the tune into an uptempo pop-rocker. Lead singer Jimmy (Johnathon Schaech) isn't happy at first, but guitarist Lenny (Steve Zahn) and the nameless Bass Player (Ethan Embry) think the song sounds better that way -- and they notice the girls like it just fine. Soon people are actually requesting the song at their shows, and the One-Ders scrape together some money to press a single of "That Thing You Do" to sell between sets. A DJ puts the song on the radio, and opportunity knocks in the form of Mr. White (Tom Hanks), who works for the very major Play-Tone Records label. Play-Tone buys the rights to "That Thing You Do" and puts the band on the road as their song makes it way to the top of the national charts. But what can The Wonders (as Play-Tone have re-named them) do for an encore? And what should Guy do about his infatuation with Jimmy's girlfriend, Faye (Liv Tyler)? Real-life 60's obsessed rocker Chris Isaak has a small part as a recording engineer, and fans of real 60's garage bands will appreciate the wealth of small, accurately observed details (for example, halfway through the film, when a few "That Thing You Do" royalty checks have presumably kicked in, the band's inexpensive Danelectro guitars disappear and the Wonders are suddenly playing on brand new Fender gear -- the height of rock style in 1965).

Mr. White was right about Guy being the smart one. If it wasn't for him speeding up the song's tempo, the band wouldn't even have gone further than the talent show.

guy was the smart one in the band. he was the first one to question about changing managers but also was the one who knew what it took to be successful. he also said yes to "weekend at party pier" knowing it's a good gig and he and the band would get paid. he cared about the music but he also cared about doing what is right and being the one to pay attention to fay. jimmy may have been the talented one but he lacks guy's passion for music and integrity.

Guy was also a jazz musician. He was affluent in the deconstruction of music. That automatically means, dude has brains. Anytime someone approached him about the band, he knew it wasn't about him and acted accordingly.

Without question! Guy didn’t like the slow tempo from the get go, and I remember Jimmy was pissed that he didn’t slow it down…until he realized that’s what made it a hit!

I always liked how he has a stern look when tells him they're in breach of contract, then kind of smiles and lets him off the hook. Kind of like, "You're a nice guy. I'm not going to torture you. This happens all the time. Good luck." This movie worked on so many levels.
@Partyboy22
@Partyboy22 5 лет назад
I think it has more to do with the fact that Guy is probably the only member of the band Mr. White truly respected. The original Bass Player was never really committed to the band, otherwise he never would've enlisted in the Marine Corp. Lenny is a clown who made it clear from the get-go he was only in it for the chicks. Lastly, Jimmy is a control freak who wanted to do things his way and not compromise with the label for the sake of his artistry. Even though Guy himself never really seemed that committed to the band, he was clearly the most grounded and level-headed out of the four of them. And Mr. White saw that.
@tcraigh1

Technically if a contract was breached Guy is not responsible. Lenny had disappeared, the bass player had already left but they knew he and Jimmy quit. Guy was the only one left and had no control over what happened.

Yeah, what I always liked about this movie is that Tom Hanks went out of the way to have no real villain. It would have been so easy to make the studio executive into this monster, but in the end, he was just doing his job, and felt for Skitch. That smile in this scene is just perfect.
@jonthomas8569

@@tcraigh1technically they all would’ve been on the hook. Money was spent promoting them, and Jimmy wouldn’t own the rights to his own songs. It could be argued they needed to pay them back. You’d be amazed how many artists get dropped from a label but still get stuck with all the bills that were incurred. Of course this isn’t a real band, and it’s a terrific movie.

I think that was part of the reasoning naming the band "The Oneders" so Mr. White's comment of "One Hit Oneders" lets the audience in on the inside joke.
@galoon
@galoon 6 лет назад
That's a fact--this movie does a great job showing how record labels handled singles and new acts in the '60s. Mr. White likely knew this band was going to have problems staying together as soon as the bass player announced he was joining the Marines--and it was obvious the other members didn't know. A band's success depends on a lot more than talent and sound.
@Partyboy22
@Partyboy22 5 лет назад
@@galoon You're right. Commitment is a big part of a band's success. It's like being in a relationship. If your heart is not truly into it, then the whole thing is doomed to fail. Mr. White recognized right away that there was not a lot of commitment coming from them. The Bass Player saw the whole thing as a hobby to occupy his time until he joined the Marine Corp, Lenny made no qualms about only being in it for the chicks and Guy was sort of roped into the whole thing as a favor. The only one who was committed was Jimmy, who revealed himself to be a control freak and self proclaimed "artist" who wanted to do things his way which would rub a lot people the wrong way. Mr. White knew it was just a matter of time before the band imploded, so he tried to get as much out of the band as he could before the inevitable happened.
@kbanghart
@kbanghart 5 лет назад
@@Partyboy22 yep I agree, people in Tom Hanks position knew how to read people very quickly, a group is only as strong as its weakest link. And as you said, Lenny was the dumb one who married that girl and ran off to Vegas and spent all his money lol. But from the studio perspective, getting one group to produce a big hit also helped get publicity for other groups as well, when they went on the tours.

The thing about this movie is, it shows how any band full of extremes is going to implode. Each member was over the top except Guy. Lenny was a party guy, Jimmy was Serious artists guy and TB Player was an extreme introvert. So much so nobody knew where he was when he joined the military. None of the Beatles were the extremes that that media portrayed them to be. They all shared traits. Until the end when John decided he was going the Jimmy route and become a SERIOUS artist. They made Jimmy the antagonist from the start. Guy improves his song, he melts down. They dont record his favored song(My Only Dreams) he breaks down, they pigeon hole him into a engagement with Faye, he breaks down huge and then when Mr White TELLS him what they are going to record he implodes the BAND. Guy WAS the smart one because through it all he just did what felt RIGHT and enjoyed it all for what it was.

The only group , or should I say individual that kept control and did not let the recording company or anybody take control of his group or songs was Dave Clark. The Dave Clark Five did not make it after 1967 , but Dave Clark was way so smart .He hired a studio drummer on his records , he payed his members a salary , bought an old British Rock and Roll tv show and the smartest move was , he never got married ???????

Earlier in the movie when the Wolfman is introduced to the guys the names of a few bands that Wolfman has played with are thrown around. He receives the charts in the mail (or from the studio) a few days ahead to learn them, and then when the band is ready to go into the studio the session players already know their parts. Kai Winding, Leland Sklar, Joe Osborn, Sal Nistico, Hal Blaine, Steve Gadd, yadda yadda yadda. They're all studio musicians (to varying degrees).

@@noahhobson4521 White could have made up some BS about "negotiations continuing for future recording sessions" and put them up in the hotel a few more days. Actually White could have played real hardball with Lenny and Jimmy and told them they had to get back in the studio to complete The Wonders first album. In addition to "That Thing You Do" and "All My Only Dreams," they had "Dance With Me Tonight" and "Little Wild One" pretty much performance ready from the Play Tone tour.

I believe the character was more than generous to the band. He made them a national success, but like all things ego and arrogance is what destroyed the band.

It's business. And The Wonders were in breach of contract.

@@noahhobson4521 Technically, Guy is still there AS a Wonder, so he could technically save the rest of the former members legal woes by insisting he's still a Wonder and not in breach. Guy could be the new leader of The Wonders, and then find new members to fill the rest of the group up.

JB Scott Actually NSYNC were popular for about 6 years. I loved them! Still think they are awesome. Shame they never recorded new music since Justin went solo.

oh yeah true they were formed in like 1995 or 1996 then soared from there I always thought it was 1997 when they formed since I knew of their big 1998 break like everyone else did.

Countless groups. Which really shows you how much commitment groups have that are still together and doing their thing decades later.

I remember there was a band in the 60s called The Beatles. They made a few cool records,and then sadly they just disappeared 😕. Wonder whatever happened to them.

Mr White wants up tempo selections, even on the 2 songs The Wonders get to create. Basically begging Jimmy to quit.

Honestly, a One-Hit Wonderland episode on the Oneders would be a great April Fool's Joke. I'd love to see Todd do that.
