I'd suggest that the snake was a black rat snake or eastern racer, neither of which are venomous. Many snakes will imitate a rattler by wagging their tails as a defensive measure.

I had just wished Chad a happy birthday on his video, and then come to watch your channel, and Shannon saying it was Kyle's birthday, too. You two have made SO MUCH improvement on your land from what it was back in the beginning. It really looks great! As others have said, I think it is a very good chance that is a non-venomous black ratsnake. They will shake their tails and they will coil to emulate a rattlesnake to defend themselves. Most of the time they are docile, but will take a stance if they feel threatened. FYI, they can grow to be three to six feet long. I don't think you have to worry about them around you or the dog or goats as they go after small animals, such as mice, rats, squirrels, chipmunks,rabbits, etc. They like to eat eggs also, but you don't have any chickens, or ducks, so you don't need to worry about that, yet. They like wooded areas, and they can climb trees and also go in the water. They are beneficial for keeping down the rodent population on your land. Little Spruce is growing so fast! I love watching his little tail wagging while he has his bottle feeding. It was fun to see Mama having some leaps and kicks in the video, too. I don't normally see her doing them. Happy Birthday to both Kyle and Chad. My baby brother and I share a birthday, he was born on my 4th birthday, 60 some odd years ago. He never fails to remind me that I am older. I just let him know that means I'm wizer. That gets a good laugh out of him. Kyle embrace every year for there is so much to learn in each, I know your parents have told you that the older you get the faster they go. Yesterday, or so it seems I turned 40, No that was over 25 years ago. It seems like a week ago. Don't waste the time worrying about getting older thank God for it for it is a joy denied to some. That is a black rat snake they are not venomous but will bite and it hurts, they eat rodents and such and keep other snakes away. They make the "rattle" to scare things away. They can be aggressive. Happy Birthday, Kyle! Rattle snakes are not black, that was a Rat Snake! Rattle snakes are brown, they have brown spots on them, and have rattles on the end of the tail. That was a harmless Rat Snake, they eat rodents, and eggs.

Looking it up, looks like possibly a rat snake. Same color, size and lives in rocky areas. I didn’t see the head on your video. Reading for a bit says many snakes take on rattling their tails if they feel threatened, even if not venomous snakes. Having live stock will draw in critters like that, not a bad thing since they eat mice, rats and sometimes lizards 🤷‍♀️ in my book any snake is a dead snake lol! Not that I ever could kill one, but passing on my feelings about them lol! Oh add spiders… I don’t kill them, but they get taken outside far from my house!

Happy Birthday! Thanks for not killing the snake, just cuz it was a snake! He was a harmless rat snake and a good guy to have around. They eat rodents and other snakes. He was threatened by you. You're much bigger and you were poking at him...and when that happens they will rattle their tails in a threatening way and more often than not just try to get away, or as in your case try to defend themselves. You owe it to your own peace of mind to research the snakes found in your area, and for the well-being of everyone and everything involved. Be informed, not ignorant! Love y'all, love your life, and love that you share it with us!

Please don't kill the snake. The rattling is it's defense mechanism. Learn about the snakes that are potentially harmful in your area. If it was truly agressive it would come after you.
