New Year, new series! Today, I'm asking The Question: Can we turn bulk rare Gixian Puppeteer into a $1 approximation of Sheoldred, the Apocalypse?
While I don't have a full deck list to share, I've got some key cards, some enablers, and some payoffs for this strategy - all of which can be picked up for less than the price of one Shelly!
But what do YOU think? Is the Praetor destined to be queen of Standard until she rotates? Or can we break out from her oppressive grasp for just a buck?

Puppeteer seems way more interesting than Sheoldred. I hate that you just play her and will eventually win the game without having to do any more work

Loving the concept of this series! I don't really keep up with Standard anymore, but the engines you've shown off definitely can give you a budget Sheoldred!! At about $70+ USD a piece, I'd much rather just use a deck that builds around Gixian Puppeter and is less than one Sheoldred...

Budget is always the big issue when deciding what to build I feel like. So to find options that basically does the same thing but cheaper is something I very much looking forward to!

Consider is the cheapest draw in standard, picklock prankster sets up your graveyard and is a two for one even though it isn't technically a card draw, and faerie mastermind is probably the best card for this deck, even though it's a bit more costly, because it allows you to trigger the puppetteer during your opponent's turn as well, and can do it multiple times over the course of the game. This is a very interesting concept for a series, keep it up

I love building budget decks! Some of my friends and I build commander decks where every card costs 50 cents or less and they tend to perform very well due to them being well tuned.

This puppeteer build is essentially how I build my commander decks. It basically does the same thing and I bet you didn’t see it done this way before

I mostly play Commander, and I've noticed as I went along that I started proxying up Sheoldred after Sheoldred for my decks. Honestly, when I built Sedris the Traitor King, I bought a Talion the Kindly Lord instead.

I'm currently working on a blue/black Commander deck for a friend on a budget with this strategy in mind. Thank you for the idea. I also like this because rather then play Sheoldred who does the work for you it makes the player work for it which in my opinion makes the pay off worth it in the end.

I just wish the Wildcard economy of Arena wasn't so rough. It seems like 90% of cards even in strong budget brews nowadays are rares

I would like to keep doing that, yes. Kinda took a break after cohosting the Pro Tour in Portland a few weeks ago and now I'm enjoying previews for the upcoming set!

I play on Arena and I play paper at my local game store(s), but as of right now that's about it. I am looking to set up a Spelltable though so I can do webcam games with other content creators, someday.

Gixian Puppeteer is not legendary but having multiple copies out doesn't do a whole lot without some enablers, so you want to find the right balance but a clone or two could be useful. Good thinking!

"How are we feeling about Sheoldred?" In disbelief that she was printed. In disgust that she hasn't been banned. Losing a little more respect for everybody every time she hits the board.
