any plans to review fellow youtuber Xiran Jay Zhao first book Iron Widow? if you havent seen her channel she mostly talks about wester media depictions of asian cultures (mostly chinese as thats where she is from) but she recently annnounced she wrote a book loosly based in part on the first female emporor of china (and a little bit Darling in Fraxx cause liek most people she HATED how that series ended)
As a Christian myself, I apologize about the aggressiveness in people trying to covert. I don’t believe that is right, people should discover themselves. Love the channel man.
I'm assuming you're talking about the emails as being aggressive. I don't think sending someone a book you enjoyed is overly aggressive even if its Christian themed. Id see those who sent him books as those who cared enough to send him something as a good thing.
I mean as a Christian I'd also remind you of the Great Commission, which is a commandment to spread the gospel... But there is an appropriate way to go about it. I think sending a book or an email is pretty harmless all things considered. If it were in-person or continual online harrassment from the same person, then I'd say they should chill.
Not going to lie I kind of like seeing some self-promo stuff, although I do understand why it can be boring/annoying for people especially when there's a lot of it. I don't know, to me seeing fans of this channel send you copies of their finished novels is weirdly inspiring.
Yeah! Like i am an aspiring writer and i genuinely want to send my book to Daniel. I'd be ok if he didn't show it on camera or reviewed, but I love his channel and without him knowing it he was a part of my writing journey and I just want to share that. But i can totally see how it can come off as "just another author trying to get a big RU-vidr to review their book and do some unsolicited promo". Which is why if he has the restrictions of not showing or reviewing self promo books on camera, I'll understand, but it's better than just not being able to send it to him
I just now got the idea (when he said no more self-promo) that there should be a booktuber with a channel or at least a segment devoted solely to unknown, unconnected self-published writers. Searching the haystack for that one gem of a needle, if you will, and giving criticism as you go. It'd be interesting. It would need to be someone who knows a fair bit about literature, and who has the balls to tell people things like "your prose stinks, no one would voluntarily read past the first sentence" and "okay, I'm on page three, and the prose is beautiful, but I'm bored out of my head because you've given me nothing to care about" and so on. Just start reading, stop as soon as you identify the first reason this book isn't passing muster and tell us about it. Maybe start each segment with a pile of books that were discarded right away, and then do a couple which managed to last for a couple chapters, and finish the segment with one that got read in its entirety, and a review of that one.
Described as "Inception in a Polynesian fantasy setting," Dreams of the Dying is a slow-burning, haunting blend of fantasy, mystery, and psychological horror, that explores mental illness, morality, and the dark corners of our minds Thanks to whoever got that for Daniel, now I have a new book to look into :)
I just finished it yesterday, and bloody hell - all pun intended - was it good. However, there are some scenes which could possibly be rather triggering to some, i.e. suicide.
The book is based on the RPG "Enderal: Forgotten Stories", It's an entirely new game made in Skyrim's Engine, available for free on steam. It's one of the better RPG's I've played, with really exceptional characters. If you have any interest in checking out the book, I would highly suggest checking out the game itself, seriously, I recommend it to everyone, it's phenomenal.
Daniel: “A large chunk of my viewers is kids” Also Daniel: proceeds to bite a potato received via post by some random person on the web and kill a humanoid toy by severing its head. Also also Daniel: “why don’t potatoes bleed” xD
I am with him, I genuinely have a hard time figuring out why someone would like those. I understand normal figurines (although even those often don't look exactly like the character), but the big head caricatures draw a blank for me.
I'm pretty sure that Midnight Sun is a retelling of the first book from the perspective of Edward. So maybe not the worst place to start. Never read any of the books, so I'm not sure.
@@cussundriakneal9904 Edward is a creep in the movies and other books too from what I can tell. I don't think he'd like Twilight no matter which book he started with. I did see the first two movies and hated Edward because he was such a creep.
@@stormageddon2223 My 13 year old just started Twilight. First thing she said is "Edward is such a gross creep". I about died laughing. I'm glad she's reading, but why?.....
Ahh, but what happens if the WoT show is a big hit and the inevitable Moiraine Funko Pop appears? Also, the Baru Cormorant books are totally in the wheelhouse of what you enjoy.
As a Christian myself, I cannot think of a worse way to try and get someone to think about or accept Christianity than sending them a book about the topic randomly lol. Great video as always Daniel! Keep up the good work!
You promised us Twilight at the beginning, I waited for Twilight throughout the whole video. And I've never read a Twilight book or watched a Twilight movie. And now I'm eagerly awaiting for your review.
I hope you know that you genuinely have some of the most entertaining mail opening videos on YT. Like up there with Moriah Elizabeth unboxing people's godforsaken (in every sense of the word) squishies.
This episode has a very destructive and nonchalant energy. Like watching a flower maiden roundhouse kick some dude in the jaw. What a strange 13 minutes
Ah man, I'm so sorry about the agressive Christians Daniel. I mean, I'm a Christian myself, heck i even study theology but this is ridiculous! People should choose to believe and choose to want to know more. This is so... disrespectful. I'm really sorry that you have to deal with it. People should just respect other people's wishes.
Should I send him a copy of Søren Kierkegaard? I wonder how he'd react to that... (btw, I am not religious, but I find theology and religious philosophy interesting anyway).
@@marioksoresalhillick299 I think with people being the way he are he might not appreciate it. If people left him be he might find it interesting. You could always send a letter and ask him first.
@@cassandramuller7337 yeah, makes sense. I might just do that... or I could send a copy of Nietzsche with it so he knows I am not trying to proselytize.
The Traitor Baru Cormorant is one of the best books I've ever read! I had an existential crisis for about 3 days after finishing it and I cried so much while reading the book, I recommend it so much!
Yes, and the series gets better. As it goes on, what you thought was happening in Traitor becomes less clear and more moving. Unfortunately, it looks like it might be while before the series is finished.
Oooh, the 40k book is a fancy copy of one of the Ciaphas Cain collections. It's basically 40k Blackadder/Harry Flashman black comedies. They get a little samey once you've read a few but they're good fun.
You deciding to review Midnight Sun has finally given me the energy to push through the last 200 pages. Also interested to see an outside perspective as Twilight is one of those series that had the potential to be an good fantasy series.
I am currently reading Black Tongued Thief and it is awesome! Chock full of Ye Olde Fantasy Themes, Tropes, and Vibes, non-stop swashbuckling adventure, and some of the more nicely-handled and fully-formed world-building I've had the pleasure to enjoy, all narrated by a snarky, morally gray yet refreshingly self-aware and chill main character that I would 100% pull out all the "you're cool, can we hang out" benign-but-insistent stalker stops if I met in IRL. By the end of the first few chapter I was well and truly hooked for the full series long haul. Perdido Street Station is also one of my all time faves. So weird, yet so richly layered and compelling.
There is no rational reason for me to enjoy this....but I did enjoy it....a lot. Thank you Daniel and thank you to all the people sending him stuff and allowing this kind of content
After watching your channel I read kings of the wyld, since then I’ve read lots more fantasy and I’m about to start wheel of time, thanks for inspiring my love of fantasy!
After all the Andrew Rowe books he got, I hope he considers starting one or continuing on with the one series (Arcane Ascension) he's already reviewed.
Dreams of the Dying is from one of my favorite games, "Enderal: Forgotten Stories ". Really great game, free on steam if you own Skyrim, one of the best RPG's I've played, personally looking forward to reading Dreams of the Dying, maybe seeing a review or hearing your thoughts on it would be cool! :) Shout out to whoever sent you that as a fellow Enderal Fan!!!
I forgot about Daniel's dyslexia until he called Alita, "Atila", which made me think of a cyborg hun leading a cyberpunk army against the Chinese wall.
People are passionate about their faith and want others to know about it. Don't take offense to it. Prayers for you Daniel as always. Also you are nice guy it seems. You handled it with grace.
