MLB's Hit King is also MLB's Biggest Scumbag

The recent Shohei Ohtani/Ippei Mizuhara gambling scandal has reignited a decades old debate: does Pete Rose belong in the Baseball Hall of Fame?
Pete Rose is one of the most controversial and well-known figures in sports history. MLB's all-time Hit King bet on baseball, including betting on his own Cincinnati Reds while he was player-manager and manager of the club. Beyond that, he's lied about his actions for decades, never repented, and potentially committed even more heinous acts beyond the gambling.
This video is why I think he should NEVER be allowed into Cooperstown.

I love the example about how Rose’s managerial decisions would be influenced by his gambling. Who knows if he intentionally saved his best relievers for a game he had a wager on, sacrificing the games that he didn’t have money on. The fact that Johnny Bench said he shouldn’t be a HOF should tell fans that Rose is not a good person
@dredwick
@dredwick 20 дней назад
So, what if he didn't bet on his team, and he still did the exact same thing... would it be wrong then? Let's say he didn't make a bet, but still saved his best relievers... does that make it wrong? If so, then you are essentially saying that the REASON you do something makes your act of doing something right or wrong. I could donate all my money to charity, but its only a good thing if I did it out of pure kindness? If I did it to get some sort of tax relief, then it doesn't mater? Smfh, this is ridiculous thinking. Especially for a sport.

@@dredwick All of that is irrelevant. The fact that its casts ANY DOUBT, WHATSOEVER on the game and it's outcome is the problem. That's what "the integrity of the game" MEANS. And there is NO WAY you can prove his decision weren't altered by his betting or not betting.
@dredwick
@dredwick 17 дней назад
@@FourFriends-gk8lz There is no way you can prove that he ever bet on his team as a player or that he ever bet for his team to lose as a player-manager. In fact, there is no way you can prove that his betting altered the outcome of the game. And since you are the one making the claim that his betting affected the integrity of the game, the burden of evidence lies with you. The issue is that people want to use Rose's betting to redefine what is integral to the game. Just like when the Hall of Fame rules were changed in 1991 to keep people off the list. "Integrity" is just a smokescreen to control the perception of the game. Otherwise the MLB would have already banned steroid users from being in the Hall of Fame, and they would have been banned from the entire league altogether like Rose. Because steroids actually do affect a game, unlike betting on your team to win. Not to mention the use of illegal substances to alter the spin rate of a pitch... that actually does affect the game. Anyone making an argument about the integrity of the game regarding Rose should 100% have the same views regarding steroids and illegal substances.

The man at one point had a deal that would keep him out of prison, forgive his gambling debts, and eventually let him in HOF. He screwed that up. And we are talking 6 figure gambling debts. Rose had some associates of less than stellar character behavior wise. After having gone throught that already with Black Sox scandal they did want to take a chance of it happening again. The mob was still around at this point. The repeated lying by Rose did not help. Rose thought he was above the sport. That is not to say MPB is not in its own way hypocritical. They knew he had a major gambling problem for decades and did nothing. Granted when Rose started playing to gamble you went to a bookie. Also no Gamblers anonymous either. Bet on them winning. Who cares about that? In fact, I would encourage players to do so, because it would make them even more motivated to win. It gets pretty boring even for the players by game 162, especially if you aren't a playoff contender. Plus it's an addiction, much like how we're realizing that drug addicts shouldn't go to prison. Pete's gambling goes back to when he was a kid. Reading "Charlie Hustle: The Rise and Fall of Pete Rose, and the Last Glory Days of Baseball by Keith O'Brien" It documents how Pete was gambling way before he even put on a Major League uniform. As a kid, Pete used to play dice and other gambling rackets on his block. Pete's father also bet on horses and took Pete to the horse track with him. We as a society have to separate artist from their art or we will have no art. Majority of the greatest artist in history whether illustrators, athletes, musicians, filmmakers, writers; have done horrendous things against their fellow man OUTSIDE their time creating the times art they birthed into existence. You cancel the art because of the artist, you cancel the majority of all art already in existence and the art yet to come. If the artist hasn't been canceled, statistically speaking, that just means their cancellation is waiting on their inevitable future crimes against humanity and fall from grace. Reminds me of that old Star Trek episode 'The Enemy Within' where a transporter mishap separates Captain Kirk into two halves: his good, kind decent side and the dark, impulsive depraved side. Immediately, his empathetic pacifist good natured persona is a weak ineffectual leader without the other more aggressive, passionate, dark impulses of man side. And the dark side goes running amok the ship paranoid, raging, several murder and rape attempts on his crew and just complete sociopathic savage on the rampage. Spock assesses that it is Kirk's unsavory side, the aspects of his personality that he finds ghastly and repulsive the very qualities that make him such a great, successful leader of men and Federal starship. That same metric can be applied to artists across all mediums and time. Cancel the artist, but not the art. Doesn't stop the music, movies, books or highlight reels from still being awe inspiring or sources of entertainment. Pete Rose the player should be in the Hall Of Fame as a player. He's not being inducted as a manager or for Pete The Degenerate Gambler. No. The player. To deny the reality he wasn't a game changer force of nature in his day is censorship and a collective lie asked of us all that I and nobody should sign off on Barry Bonds same thing. He was a Hall Of Famer before the steroid era. Everyone Practically was in steroids and competed at the same level. The steroid era saved baseballs ass. After that disastrous strike lost '94 season, baseball lost bitter fans for two and half years till the McQuire-Sosa home run race brought everyone back. It was exciting and they still had to make it actually happen.

News flash the HOF is supposed to be based solely on how a player played in their career. There are literally racists from the early 1900s in the HOF so trying to disclaim him by bringing his personal life and personality traits is ridiculous and stupid. And also it's been 35 fricken years who cares if he bet on baseball and was a shitty person off the field. Give Rose his flowers and acknowledge one of the greatest players to play the game with the rest of them.

When I hear people argue that Rose should be in the HOF, they're usually not defending him for betting, they're saying that alone is a dumb reason to keep him out when it should be based on playing career. I totally agree. Ban him from ever being involved with the game again, he fully deserves that. But keeping him out of the HOF is stupid when he was such a great player. And yes, talking about his personal life is stupid when, as another person said, freaking Cap Anson is in the HOF, OJ is in the football HOF, etc etc etc. Off-the-field issues should have no bearing on HOF candidacy.

There are still racist policies sending Blacks to illegal for-profit prisons for charges that are perfectly legal for Whites. This entire culture is built on hypocrisy. PC language & culture is supposed to make Everyone Equal, right? But the term "African-American" is applied only to Blacks. Blacks born in the U.S.A. How is it possibly not racist to create a term for just one "race" (that term itself is also an invention ironically). Whites are simply "American." Not POC. So the very language that proclaims to make people equal labels them unequally.

I agree with most all the points made here, exception being the Fosse play. There are more reasons PER should not reinstated. History has NOT exonerated Rose. With all that's changed in the gambling landscape since 1989, Rose betting on baseball is still 100% outlawed by MLB. His use of illegal bookmakers is also STILL outlawed. Even if you don't agree there is an integrity issue to induction into the HOF, there is a practical one. At this point, the only thing that could be done is to hold a separate vote and, if elected, place a plaque with the others. There couldn't possibly be a standard induction ceremony, any other inductees would have their moment turned into a circus, not fair to them and not to mention PER only real interest in HOF is the $$ that come from membership. Lastly, why do folks care so much about a deplorable person? There are some injustices that just aren't worth the trouble because the subject has acted in such a deplorable manner. Let's find someone worth fighting for. If you believe in redemption, how can we ever know he's worthy of redemption having like so many times for decades?

It's "inconsistency by vibes" WHICH IS NOT AN EFFING THING. Not only does the permissibility of fans gambling not transfer, but it's even more rational for a sports league, with a vested interest in sports books, to combat match fixing. Casual bettors will not bet on your sport if they believe it's fixed. Casinos don't let their table game dealers bet on any table games for this reason.

I still think Rose should be reinstated, your points have not done enough to dissuade me. If the league doesn’t believe in the “Integrity” of the game of baseball enough to not make billions off of betting and tramp stamp gambling sports books logos all over, then why should they care about letting a gambling addict be associated with the league. Also, a lot of your situations that you cover go into hypotheticals. “I’m sure he bet against his team at some point” or “He would have bet against the Reds if he was in deep enough”, except it doesn’t matter, as they’re both hypotheticals. If after 35 years, they can’t find any evidence that he bet against his own team, then that shouldn’t even be a talking point. Also, the MLB could have gotten Pete some help with his addiction, if they cared so much. I know they don’t necessarily owe it to him, but if the MLB and other major sports leagues want to keep gambling addicts from ruining the sport, then a good idea would be to get them professional help, since these people are addicts. Overall, regardless of what you think of Pete as a person, there’s no question someone who was that good of a player deserves to grace the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Not to mention those of us that have placed a wager or two know that there is more to gambling than betting winners and losers there is also the spread. However, he played the game like his life depended on it and he is not a scumbag like Barry Bonds, who used an illegal substance(s) to destroy baseball's record book. Bonds and Lance Armstrong are the worst examples of human kind in sports. I have to disagree with your points about not betting against his own team: I understand that any wager for your team can alter decision-making but if you’re trying to win the game the overall integrity of the game stands true - you play to win the game if you didn’t bet on the game so if you bet in favor of your team it doesn’t make a difference you’re still trying to win. The nasty scandals are the ones where players throw games and play poorly on purpose like the black Sox and that NBA player from the raptors. That is what undermines the integrity of the game is losing on purpose - betting to win is allowed in boxing and golf for the athletes, and I understand those are individual sports but betting to win doesn’t undermine the integrity of the game. If you ever find evidence of Rose betting on his team to lose I would say keep him out of the hall, but until then my opinion is he should be allowed in since he never undermined the integrity of the game even if he is a greasy a-hole of a person he has the most hits of anyone to ever play the game.

I've always been mixed on whether Rose belongs in or not. I have an autographed photo of him hanging on my wall. He was easily one of the best players of all time. I've seen footage of him. He was fun to watch. But he was a bastard. He broke rules. He bet on games. He wasn't apologetic about it. He was a poor sportsman. I don't think I'd be upset either way. I think he's gotten what he's deserved - both in a negative and positive way. He has been inducted into the Reds HOF. People still talk about it, people still respect him. Not getting in did not ruin his life or ruin his career. People still now he was a skilled ball player. The HOF should be able to do what it wants at the end of the day, and if they think the negative impact he had as a sportsman and a gambler outweighs his accomplishments at the plate, I think that's fair - he was not a good guy and it's not like he "accidentally" gambled or anything. He made bad decisions he has to live with it. The only way I'll have a strong opinion about this is if the stuff covered towards the end of the video (around 18:30) turn out to be the worst case scenario. In that case? Yeah, keep him WELL away from the HOF.

I like your channel and your analysis, but I disagree on Pete and the HOF. Sure Pete is and was a jerk. So are lots of guys in the HOF. I also don't care if he is ever reinstated by MLB to manage or work in any capacity. But the HOF adopting their rule to exclude him was a bait-and-switch. He never would have agreed to the ban had that rule been in place. Indeed, I doubt whether Bart Giamatti would have gone along with that had he lived. Further, Pete was never going to be a HOF manager, just like Tommy Lasorda was not a HOF player. Pete was banned when managing. Banning a player from the HOF for the actions of a manager is wrong, even if that manager is the same person. Shoeless Joe was never banned from the HOF despite his banishment for his involvement in the Black Sox scandal. He simply didn't receive the necessary support from the voters. MLB is doing this not out of principle but out of spite. Pete is an unrepentant jerk who will shill anything for cash. But he was also a transcendent player that deserves to be enshrined. Pete should be viewed as the same way we view Ty Cobb. Actually, he should be viewed as more positively than Cobb, because Ty Cobb probably DID throw at least a couple of games. But both are legends because they played incredibly hard. As a human being, he is disgusting and might be one of the worst outside the racists who kept the color barrier going and Ugyth Urbina. I don't have a problem with the Ray Fosse play so much as I have a problem with him throwing a tantrum about the Garber AB. He's held up as this incredible competitor who will stop at nothing to win, even in the all-star game. Then why is he crying to reporters that Garber tried too hard to get him out? That's hypocritical to me. If he was consistent, I wouldn't have ever brought the Fosse play up.

@@AndThatsBaseball Fair enough. And the Gene Garber AB might have been predicated by some drama or chest beating nobody reported about. I overall understand why you wanted to make a different argument in this video, and I commend you for not capitulating to your audience (which is rare for youtubers), but I disagree with both your premise and conclusion, but if I found out he did throw games, I'd be all for everything you said and more, but I simply don't believe that to be even slightly likely that he ever threw a game.

@@SconnerStudios Pete Rose did throw games. He bet on the Reds every day, but sometimes when he overused his pitchers the night before, to win a game he had a lot of money on, he's mysteriously refused to bet on the Reds again the following day? Why, because he was intentionally throwing that game and making sure not to lose money on it.

@@SconnerStudios I'd look more in-depth on those Cobb accusations. He was unliked by his teammates & the press. One thing he was accused of doing was calling a heckler in the stands an n-word, then jumping them, but Cobb was against the 'Gentleman's Agreement' that kept Blacks out of the majors & took his son only to Negro League games after he retired. He didn't want his son to miss seeing some of the best players. I also have reason to believe his integrity wouldn't allow him to do that, but I'm not going to pretend that I have facts that make it a certainty. I'm a terrible researcher who stumbles into good info by accident.

The whole Ray Fosse collision is so overused and not even a good example. You keep calling the game an “exhibition”, it was the all star game, and yes, it meant something back then. If it was so meaningless Fosse wouldn’t have been blocking the plate. In fact Fosse was an all star the next year and won back to back World Series in 73 and 74. So I’m not shedding any tears for the guy where two people were doing what they had to do. That’s the way it was played back then, by everyone.
