The 2023 Chevy Bolt EUV Is The Best Affordable EV In America... For Now.

Chevy seems determined to "make fetch happen" and to do it they have slashed prices on the Bolt and Bolt EUV yet again. That coupled with the return of at least a partial tax credit for 2023 could mean you could get a Bolt for as little as $21,850 or a Bolt EUV for $23,450. The Bolt and EUV will of course be as small on the inside as that price tag is on the outside, but that's just fine for an affordable people mover.

@@EVBuyersGuide. I hope you see this. I’m considering either the Bolt EUV or the Kona ev before it grows in size next year. I live in FL where the Kona is not sold, so would be buying one in Maryland & driving it back to FL. Whichever one I buy, I’m going to put stickier tires on. Which do you think would be more fun to drive? As a current GTI 7.5 owner, which do you think I’d like more? (Which VW would bring the id3 to America!!!!)

I own a 2022 Bolt EV. I totally agree with Alex! It annoys me when people complain about the lack of affordable EVs and turn around and complain that the Bolts don't have all the features of cars that cost $10,000 to $40,000 more than the Bolts. It is a small car, but some of us like driving small cars. But plenty of room inside. I track my efficacy by the month. I was getting between 4.3 and 4.7 every month from June to September. In November I am averaging 2.8. We have lots of short trips in which we are spending considerable energy heading the cabin. I noticed on longer trips it becomes less of an issue as it takes less energy to keep the cabin warm than to heat it up. Fyi I live in South Dakota so we have real winter weather. The only significant downside is the DC fast charge rate. But that doesn't matter for our daily driving. For the couple of times a year we go on longer trips and need to fast charge I could have bought an EV that charged faster but cost an extra $12,000 more or I can spend an extra hour on our trip charging. If the extra hour is going to be that big of an issue we will just take our ICE car. Or use some of the $12,000 we saved to rent a Tesla or fly. Also a lot of the fast chargers in my area are only 50kw chargers. So when of you have an EV that charges at 350 kw you won't be much faster in charging. If you want a practical efficient and fun car, check out either the Bolt or Bolt EUV.

"When I finally parked it(Bolt) at my home charging station, it had gone 322 miles on a single charge. Not bad for a car rated at 238 miles per charge. Even more impressive was the fact that I didn't really try very hard to get that many miles out of it. I spent plenty of time in traffic, which helped, but there were a few sections that I was moving along at 65-70 mph as well. No matter how you look at it, 322 miles out of a Bolt is pretty impressive." - Ed Hellwig Edmund's

My 2022 Bolt EUV is my first EV, and it has been a pure delight for the 3 months I've had it. My driving is mostly city life, with occasional 100 mile round-trip days, if I'm super active. This car is an EXCELLENT value, even fully loaded, and it does everything I need in my normal routines. We have an ICE vehicle if we are squeezed for time with a "long" trip, which could be 350 miles round trip in a day, but these only happen 3-4 times per year. Back to value: Heated and ventilated seats, Bose audio, 360 degree view camera, SuperCruise and more... for a bargain price.

A few things… I’ve had both the EV and EUV. The cargo space is actually bigger in the EUV, it’s just that the way they measured it was the same and that didn’t cover something or other on the EUV. You can Google it. Also, i have installed hitches on the EUV and it doesn’t impede the rear camera. Lastly, I’ve taken it on three 2,000 mile trips with no issues. Trick is to charge to 80%. This means you’re done in 40 minutes and you get a break every 2-2/12 hours of driving. It’s great. Best car ever.

Review them vs a hatchback Civic or Corolla - a similar small efficient car - not a Model 3, an impractical faux-luxury $40k+ car. I'm nearly sold on this Bolt EUV as my next car, if nothing else comes along that blows my mind for sub-$40k.

I've had my '23 EUV for about three months now, going ~2500 miles on short and long trips. Averaging 3.7 mi/kWh lifetime in variable Ohio weather. Overall, I really enjoy the vehicle. It is enjoyable to pilot around in regular driving, feels roomy for the size, and Super Cruise is great for long boring highway drives. My complaints are relatively minor: I find the ride a bit too soft in the sense that it isn't very well controlled over larger undulations. Also the cupholders are just a hair too small to fit my insulated bottle. Still, I'd highly recommend this car to almost anyone who can charge at home - even as you said on 120 volts. Beware of Snarky Alex! 😄 This is a great review - really appreciate the points about driving efficiency reducing the need for high power charging! Too many people talk about how fast the Hummer charges.. It has very high _power_ charging, but because it’s such a pig at driving it doesn’t actually charge very fast.. One more point: There are still a lot of DC “fast chargers” that aren’t very high power - less than 350kW. And, many of the high power charging vehicles depend on the 350kW chargers to achieve the short (acceptable) 10-80 charge times. At the common lower power chargers these vehicles take a lot longer to charge. On the other hand, the Bolts, with their small batteries and good efficiency, will be affected much less by low power chargers.

Preach it Alex!! We've had our '22 Premium Bolt EUV less than three months. It's incredibly efficient. In fact, it's as efficient as my previous Prius Prime in EV mode. On my 53 mile round trip work commute, I usually get 5 or more miles per kWh. We recently drove it on a 2,900 mile trip from FL to MI and, while it was slower than a gas car, we didn't lose all that much time with charging. The car was ready several times before we were done eating. We averaged 3.8 m/kWh on the trip. And did it comfortably. I'm so tired of reviewers focusing $100k+ cars and being OK with reporting one or two miles per kWh. I nearly bought an Ioniq 5, and I loved my test drives, but I and my bank account are very glad I chose the Bolt EUV. Edit to add that this is a car that I find myself looking for some excuse to drive it. It's that enjoyable for me.

I own a Prius Prime and I was wondering if the Chevy Bolt EUV is as comfortable?
@jerrymildredpetersen3177
@jerrymildredpetersen3177 Год назад
@@CandycaneBeyond I'd say mostly, "yes," the Bolt is as comfortable as the Prime and that's saying something. My Prime fit me like a glove. The seat is a little firmer in the Bolt EUV, so not quite as comfortable but close. On the other hand, the arm rest on the Bolt's driver's door is actually useful as an arm rest. In the Prius, if I want my left hand anywhere on the wheel, my elbow is at least 4" above the arm rest. Suspension is about the same for suppleness, although the Prius Prime feels more planted on the Yokohama Avid tires I was running. Probably due to the better rear suspension in the Gen 4 Prius. But that's more a handling factor than comfort and the Bolt handles OK considering its greater height. We did some long days in the Bolt on our trip to Michigan and neither of us got uncomfortable. One day was from 7 AM to 11 PM. Tired but not sore. Both cars had/have a power drivers seat and that helped a LOT in both cases. A major point in the Bolt's favor is that the one we got has heated AND ventilated front seats. The ventilated seat is better than I thought it would be. Another point for the Bolt is that it's a little easier to get in and out of with my new left knee. But as we all know, some people might find a car to be super comfortable while others find it excruciating. So you never can tell for sure till you get a few hours in the saddle.

I won't deny I like driving the Bolt because I like smaller cars, but I also like the dash layout, the all-around visibility, the top-down and forward looking camera view, and I love surprising people with its pep. I like the “conversation” at the beginning. Good comedy. I really liked my Bolt EUV. It’s a great commuter that can also go on a road trip if you’re patient. It’s more comfortable than the old Bolt EV, comes with nice options like an opening panoramic sunroof, nice stereo, and despite its size, it has a fair amount of room front and rear. I used to regularly transport my spouse and my parents in our Bolt EUV because they preferred it over the Model 3, especially those in the back seat. The only bummer for me on my EUV is the mediocre highway efficiency (that gets much worse in the winter due to the lack of heat pump) and the slow charging speeds (also worse in the winter). The efficiency is fine in the summer if you keep the speeds in check, but in the winter, the efficiency is about the same as my Ioniq5 AWD with the 20” wheels, which is pretty bad. It’s more manageable in the Ioniq5 because it charges so fast, but in the Bolt, it charges pretty slow. In reality, DC charging speed doesn’t matter for typical usage because you’ll just charge it at home. The only time I could get over 4mi/kWh in my EUV at 70mph was in 80 deg temps. Much hotter, it drops a bit. Much colder, it drops a lot. During near freezing up to about 40F, my freeway 70mph efficiency averaged around 2.8-3.0mi/kWh. As I said, that’s about what I get (in the winter) in my Ioniq5. My Tesla Model 3 LR (with heat pump) gets better efficiency than that with snow tires and freezing temperatures. I had a full size spare tire and a real jack (not a scissor jack) completely under the load floor in my old 2019 Bolt, which I transferred to my Bolt EUV when I got it. It fits entirely under the floor. In my 2019 Bolt, I put 225/45/17 Michelin Pilot Sport A/S4 tires on and it transformed the car. I wouldn’t necessarily call it sporty, but comparing it to a typical subcompact hatchback/crossover, it was way, way better. Definitely fun. Completely deals with the acceleration traction issues that the stock tires have, especially in the rain.

Excellent review, very helpful for new buyers unfamiliar with EVs. We have a '20 Bolt that fits my petite wife and my lanky 6' 3" frame just fine. (as Alex points out, seats are on the narrow side and may not be comfortable for those broader of beam.) My barely 5 foot better half likes the excellent visibility, it sits higher than our old Accord. For as small as the car appears, the interior feels surprisingly spacious and bright. We both love the way it handles. It is quick, and is a solid highway cruiser. Quiet cabin. The ride can be choppy on rough roads, the EUV probably does better with its longer wheelbase and added weight. The Bolt is an excellent car and worth a look.

The first 40 seconds 😂 I respect the appeal of A handling, B ride B efficiency Bolt to the fun loving journalist in you. But this score card is fantastic for my preferences. And I would buy this over the performance variant. Instead of the handling focus, a comfier front seat would be my update of choice to this package. Based on your review though, it is acceptable as such. Nice package for buyer like me, acceptable trade offs rather than any deal breakers.

I've now put 11000 miles on a 2017 Bolt that I bought used with the new replacement battery, and my experience is similar to Alex's. I got well over 4 miles per kWhr on highway trips in the summer, over 5 on my urban commute, and now that it's getting colder, it looks like it will be close to 3. I haven't had any sub-zero days yet though. I paid $20800 to drive it off the lot with 28000 miles on it, which was a bit lucky since the prices on used models have gone up considerably, so I certainly agree that it is a bargain. I did add a full-size spare, a GPS, and memory foam seat and lumbar cushions, but it looks like that might not be necessary on the newer versions. I have no need of more leg-room, so the EV is fine for me even at a long-legged 6'2". I am puzzled as to why this car didn't get more love in it's early days, but it does seem to be getting it now. So at 200-350 real world miles, no range anxiety, especially compared to the Nissan Lead I replaced, and I think the fast charge speed concern that most people have is overblown. On a trip from Maine to Washington D.C., I just planned stops at places where I could take a break, use the bathroom, eat something, and then go. The vast majority of charging is done at home, so I just figure the time I spend fast-charging is more than compensated by the fact that I spend no time waiting for a charge most of the time.

Awesome, detailed video... as usual. I owned a 2017 Bolt EV and now own a 2023 Bolt EUV (wife's car). I prefer the slightly more peppy Bolt EV (about 0.5 seconds faster 0-60 mph). In fact, even though I drive an EV6 for my daily driver, I'm looking for a 2022 year end closeout or 2023 Bolt EV. The reason I sold the 2017 Bolt? It did not have adaptive cruise which we do have on the EUV and now, I cannot live without it. LOL!

At about 7:00 I think there's a typo. It lists the Bolt as having 267/233/247 MPGe, but I think that's the EPA range estimate, not the MPGe (miles-per-gallon equivalent). Most EVs get 90-130 MPGe, so 247 would be almost Aptera-level efficiency.

excellent review as always but there was one thing that seemed a bit confusing. When you covered the range figures you listed them as MPGe (City/Hwy/Comb). But MPGe is used for efficiency not range. We should have seen figures like ~150 MPGe or higher since this is very efficient.

Great points throughout the video Alex. Our Bolt EV is on order & can't wait for it to arrive! One note about your heat pump/northern climate comment. I live in Canada. I currently have a Model 3 with a resistive heater. I've been led to believe that heat pumps use less energy but they also produce less heat. Being Canadian, I don't want an efficient heat pump, I want HEAT! :)

When I use the heat I'm sure to switch it to the floor and I'm happy that my kids are getting some of it in the back seat more quickly than they otherwise would without those vents.

Very good video and informative just like all your others. A few years ago I bought a Spark EV and your video and evaluation was key in the purchase. Were I to update my EV the EUV is my first choice. I see the Bolts as a great 2nd vehicle choice and perfect for retired folks that do mostly short trips although I wouldn't hesitate taking them on a road trip. I plan on having a level 2 installed early in 2023 so that may totally extend my Spark EV ownership but ya never know.

After watching many Bolt EUV reviews, this car comes across as unpretentious, user friendly, humble yet confident. For many folks this car should be more than good enough. And yet the Model 3 to Bolt ratio is probably 100:1 in my city (Vancouver BC Canada). After watching many M3 reviews, I come to the conclusion that the cons out weigh the pros. My niece's M3 is barely 2 years old with 25000km on it and the door panel is already coming apart. If the M3 were an ICE car I doubt many people would buy one. Whereas the Bolt is really a very good car but doesn't sell because it's not outwardly attractive like the M3. Shame.
