The 2023 Mazda CX-50 Is An Upscale, More Attractively Styled Right Sized SUV

As the best-selling vehicle in the #Mazda portfolio, the CX-5 is the most important model in the lineup. It makes sense for the company to want to expand on that success but instead of introducing a different variant of the CX-5, the 2023 #MazdaCX50 is an all-new model that builds on that success. The #CX50 is technically built on the newer Mazda3 platform, while adventure seekers can look to the #CX50MeridianEdition for extra off-road capability.

8 gears is great, yes Mazda has been slow to change but 6 gears is fine for everyday driving because we dont all drive like lunatics. The new cx-60 has 8 gears so we can expect 8 gears to be finally rolled out on models soon. The cx-60 has duel clutch as it's more responsive than a torque converter, so they say.

@@scott1245 Extra gears help with acceleration and fuel economy. Despite it's weight, AWD, and 6 gears; the cx-50 still manages 0-60 in 6.7 sec and 24mpg city/29mpg hwy. This is impressive and the cx-50 has potential. The cx-50 with an 8 speed can easily run high 5's 0-60 and have 35mpg on the hwy.

The 6 speed automatic is the sweet spot for reliability & function. Plus, the Mazda SkyActiv 6 speed automatic is actually a pretty refined & brilliantly simple design per The Care Care Nut Remix channel guy mechanical breakdown/review of the CX-5. Have fun with those imploding belt/chain CVTs that often fail around the time an extended warranty would expire, or the overly complicated, over-engineered, less-reliable 8/10 speed geared automatics and/or dual-clutch transmissions.

I don't think Mazda's designs is tired at all. They've been lightyears ahead of most other manufacturers in design who are looking way more long in the tooth than Mazda. In any case, I'm loving the look of this vehicle. Going to go test drive it and more than likely put an order in. Going to be one hell of an upgrade from my 2013 Toyota Corolla CE. Also, the hump on the rear is because it's higher off the ground but has a lower roof so they had to put that AWD shaft somewhere.

A lot of the complaints you mentioned are addressed in the CX-60 that they revealed months ago. That vehicle has a full digital gauge cluster, an 8-speed auto trans, plug-in hybrid and inline-6 powertrains, RWD based architecture, etc. The CX-70 that is coming to NA is basically the same, but wider. So we'll see if these features will trickle down to the CX-50 when they refresh the vehicle, or will Mazda reserve them for the more premium and expensive CX-70?

I know that it's not in the same size class, but I paid $44k for our new Tucson Limited PHEV. We're getting 145 MPG with it so far, as we plug it in when the battery gets depleted. We'll likely get over 1,500 miles per fill up with gas. The tech is fantastic, and the blend of electric power to the 1.6L turbo is amazingly smooth. Also, it qualifies for $6,587 in Federal tax credits, bringing the price way down below the CX-50. I really like Mazda, but they need to get their act together and should have offered this with a hybrid option right out of the gate.

It has a rattling noise coming from the back. I did not expect that from a new car. My wife old car was a Honda Accord touring and it was quieter. Great things about the CX50 are the leather quality is way better than Honda and the AC is way cooler and it looks great, but the back seat of a Honda was way bigger. Among a few small missing features, I hate the remote fob button placements making it hard to find the buttons by feel. The worst feature they went with is the remote start where you have to use the Mazda App but kills the engine as soon as you open the doors, imagine loading your groceries or car seats in the heat or cold & the remote start stops. I'm also not a fan for the lock button sensor on the door handle where it doesn't have a delay lock if any doors are still open. What else are in your wishlist to make the CX-5/50 the ultimate mid SUV?

Soyfan - what do you think of these CUV designs that don’t really have much of a bumper beyond the rear hatch? It sure seems short sided. If you get bumped in the least it looks like your hatch is totally compromised! What are those street parking folks going to do when they want to play “bumper cars” while parking??

Analog gauges rule ✊ Only makes sense Analog gauges don't fail or flicker or need to boot-up, unless performance warrants digital gauges. Such as Lexus LFA or hypercars. Cheap junk going into cars these days

I love the more traditional interior dashboard and layout... I also love the traditional shifter... But the main problem here in America for the Mazda SUV's (and crossovers) - like the CX-5, CX-9, etc) was the lack of interior room - including lack of headroom. I was really hoping the new redesigned crossovers and SUV's would fix this major problem. So far with the redesigned CX-50 - I am disappointed. The interior still is cramped.. We would like more interior room - raising the roofline and making a taller roofline would improve so many things. It would increase all around comfort, interior room, increase headroom, increase driving enjoyment, and improve visibiility and improve safety - you see out better - means less accidents.. I know this (a higher roof) would make the vehicle slightly less fuel efficient.. But I would gladly trade bit less gas mileage for better visibility and better safety and the other benefits I mentioned earlier.. Hopefully Mazda remembers this when redesigning future SUV's/crossovers.

My current car has a very tall roof and there's tons of head room inside because of it. After stepping into a CX50 at a local dealer, I can't say I'd miss the height in my current car. I thought it was fine, and I'm 6' tall. I thought the same about interior space as well. The cargo area was much narrower than my current car though, that I could find as a small annoyance.

@@ReDiiKuLuS Thanks Andrew for your thoughts.. I not only like more headroom but I also just like to sit up higher. I like the high commanding view for good visibility. Another thing I have noticed is that they are putting like a black box at the top middle of the windshield (on the windshield side of the rear view mirror).. This further reduces visibility and with less visibility it hurts safety in my view..

I really hate how manufactures require remote start to be activated through an app. What if I don't want to keep paying for the 4/5g service to allow the car to talk to my phone? Not everyone wants to do everything through their phone.
@dillonrobben4488
@dillonrobben4488 2 года назад
The added benefit to doing it through your phone is the range. My after market remote start using the OEM key fob is great-only from about 35 feet away. If you are further away, it doesn’t work(even after changing the battery). I totally wouldn’t mind paying for it on my phone if I’m able to start it from a much greater distance away.

@Dillon Robben While I see what you are saying and I don't disagree. I would like to still have the option to use my remote. Most manufacturers have moved to phone only if you want to remote start.

No one ever talks about AWD parameters. Subarus generally send some torque to the rear at all times and can shift up to 90% to the rear. I assume this Mazda is FWD only until slippage occurs and then can only send 50% rearward? And of course the big front overhang says FWD platform, which bugs me. I hope the rumors of a RWD Mazda platform are true.

Mazda's problem is combinations / options. People want black headliners and less chrome (like they have in the Mazda 3 hatchback). At least there is a choice of leather in the highest trim instead of them making you have dark brown / red. I've bought 5 new Mazda 3's over the past 7 years and they keep getting better and better.

Honestly, for me, larger than the CX-5 isn't a plus, and the repercussions of it's larger size and weight, and the cost tutting makes this a likely no-go. I'll stick with the CX-5.

And that’s why they have both the cx-5 and the cx-50 because this car won’t be for everyone. Although I know some people who have traded their cx-5 for the 50, this car is trying to bring buyers in from different brands and I think it’s been doing just that.

@@damarri8386 Yeah the wife and I actually looked at both this and the CX-5 recently and she preferred the CX-50 based on styling alone although we need a larger vehicle anyway since we've outgrown her current HR-V. This and the Buick Envision are her top choices so it will likely boil down to which one we can get for the best deal.

I got rid of my CX-5 a couple years ago. It was only 2 years old. Everyone already had Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, so the fact that Mazda didn’t offer this was ridiculous. It wasn’t something I considered much when I bought the car. The blind-spot mirrors were very buggy (would light up in the right lane on the passenger side), and a few other items were less than reliable as well. It was a nice engine and I like the look of the vehicle inside and out. I opted to dump it and pick up a Tucson. The Tucson has so many more safety features, Apple CarPlay, remote start/lock/locator, better braking, and really seems much more modern technology-wise. There’s no reason for a vehicle in the price ranges we deal with that they shouldn’t include reliable blind spot monitoring, lane assist, CarPlay or Auto, collision avoidance, or other safety features we see on many models now. Mazda is charging the same prices for cars that exclude what others give you for the same or a tiny bit more cost.
