@@madamecurious ...and it wasn't Proclaiming the Kingdom that was uppermost on Rutherford's mind. When my dad pioneered in the 1940s, they called them "colporteurs". If you look up the word, it means book peddler. And that's just the business model the Judge had in mind: print tons of books with cheap volunteer Bethel labor, shame people into knocking on doors night and day to peddle them, make plenty of money, and build out from there. Only now the internet and modern life has blown that model up, and along with it, exposed WT for how it operates, and why..

@@kevink2593, thanks for sharing this!! it’s mind boggling how JWs in the Rutherford era could not see this! It was so obvious that he was a charlatan and conman. The 8 conceited men who are the leaders now contributed to me “waking up”. Phew! I’m glad I’m out and I am happy you are too :)

@@kevink2593 That, to me, was the irony reading that page from the 1935 “Year Book”. Yes, I actually paused the video as Phil had the screenshot up. Rutherford had the gall to, not once, but twice on that page, say that Jehovah’s witnesses are not “book agents” or “booksellers”. Not too long before this, the term for “pioneer” was indeed “colporteur”, which comes from a French word the literal definition of which is “bookseller”. The Society, for many years, continued to actually refer to the placing of its publications as “selling books”. Prior to April 1, 1990, the suggested contribution was, in effect, a price tag. I remember that that catalogue the Society provided literature servants, magazine-territory servants and accounts servants was entitled the “Cost List”, and the Society instructed these servants to destroy it each year as the new edition was issued. (Talk about destruction of documents!) I also remember when the literature servant and the magazine-territory servant carried a till and, of course, the Society’s “Receipt” forms, to be filled out in triplicate, inside a file case. The Society is thoroughly a sales organization.

With the US economy doing so well, and each of the last 12 months having the lowest jobless claims since 1970, the " Pioneers " could actually, now, have a full time job, and not waste quite as much of their life by being as poor.
