Yep, dimensionally this is the biggest EV I've driven all year! All kidding aside, the e-Sprinter was a cool thing to sample, and it could make sense for fleets that want to go green, spend a bit less time with their employees at the pump, or as the basis for a short range RV for #vanlife folks that mainly go from RV park to RV park.

This van is perfect for fleet/commercial use. Local delivery around me is full of electric vans already, I see e-transits everywhere. Trades would also benefit, what electrician or plumber does more than 150 miles in a day?
@zoner__

Conversely if they drive 60 miles would they even care about fuel cost?
@matthewprather7386
@matthewprather7386 19 дней назад
@@zoner__60 miles per day at 20 mpg and $5 per gal is $75 per week.. Times 50 weeks a year is $3750.. On the other hand, the EV will probably use less than half that much money in charging. That’s not nothing.. And 14:37 the EV will skip oil changes, at least two per year at around $50 each? No air filter either. Then the EV probably won’t ever need a timing belt or a transmission service. No fuel filter. And it doesn’t have a catalytic converter to steal. Net net, a pretty good savings every year.

If youre out in the boondocks, charge at an RV campground, or unfold some panels and charge on solar. Youll gain 20-40 miles range in a day with a reasonable array and that will get you to town.

High-voltage cable to the rear motor on the outside? Ever since I found a long forum post about RAV4 owners losing that expensive component to road de-icing salt (and Toyota refusing to cover it under the hybrid warranty!), I've been leery of that design choice.

That’s not a solid axle; it’s a DeDion semi-independent axle. I bought a Sprinter 6 months ago, and this was on my radar. I ended up with the diesel. I average 27.9 mpg over the past 8300 miles so I think I made the right choice.

If you have solar the cost for “gas” for an EV is significantly cheaper than diesel. It appears a LOT of compromises were made in order to have the most common parts between the esprinter and the diesel version. Lots of small changes (eg grill, faster DC charging) would have made it a significantly better EV. Clearly, this is targeted at one market only - last mile delivery. Given the MUCH lower TCO, and as soon as Mercedes, ford and other can build eVans, all last mile delivery will shift to EV in the next 3-5 years. At the end of the day last mile delivery has only one priority - and that’s cost. Also, last mile warehouse will deploy solar on their roof significantly reduce cost per mile on eVans .

I sure can't see this as a van-life conversion. The whole point of van life is to live off the grid. Even camping is not reasonable for a vehicle like this. All the weight lowers battery range, and what to do if you are low on battery out in the boondocks?
@temaus
@temaus 19 дней назад
I wish there were hybrid or plug in hybrid vans available. Would be nice to use all the power the hybrid provides for AC, microwaves and other appliances without a need to build out a separate electrical system. Ford’s F150 hybrid even automatically starts a generator when the battery is getting low, so you never need to worry about running out of electricity

@@cn0503due to many EVs being built by amateur car companies making bad design decisions. Most of the failures in the consumer reports statistics aren’t related to the powertrain. This Sprinter is terrible in every aspect , its mind blowing how many shortcuts Mercedes took with this van , low range in real world (not the the WLTP scam, that shouldn't be allowed ) , slow charging speed, no 360 camera (that will be incredible helpful for a such a huge van) , 130HP, and 200Hp , that is very ,very slow , cabin is also full of cheap materials for a $90k . I bet my head that Mercedes wouldn't move many of this , and they will drop in price like crazy after getting stuck with them.....

The acceleration is way more important that you may think , when your cargo si loaded and heavy is absolutely terrible and frightening entering highways , i had moments when cars where flashing beeping me (and is completely understandable, you are putting 1st lane drivers in danger .
