I spent a year trying EVERY imaginable forward head posture exercise & found these to be the best exercises to reduce neck hump. The two most important components turned out to be stretching contracted joint capsules at the base of the neck and strengthening the muscles that retract the neck.

0:00 Intro
0:17 Ex.1: Towel Rolls with Traction
2:01 Ex.2: Sphinx Retractions
3:08 Exercises 2 Alternative
3:24 Ex.3: Shoulder Blade Combo
4:45 Test your Pecs
5:22 Test your SCM muscles
5:53 More you can do
EXERCISE 1
If you try to stand straight to improve posture, say up against a wall, you'll feel resistance in your spine between the base of the neck and mid-back. This is the tight joint capsules, muscles and fascia around the spine that shortens with "text neck" or "nerd neck". The first two exercises were the best to loosen that soft tissue up to correct posture.
EXERCISE 2
The second exercise includes a strengthening component to strengthen the deep neck flexors and other muscles that retract the neck. I noticed that while trialing all these exercises to correct bad posture that the Chin Tuck Exercises (Neck Retractions) were much more effective if the mid back was extended, so that's why this one gets the nod.
EXERCISE 3
Slumped shoulders and poor posture are heavily related. If you don't include an exercise to improve rounded shoulders, there simply will not be enough strength in the supporting muscles of the shoulder blade to maintain good posture. So I combined 2 different but awesome scapula stabilising exercises to make the third exercise. A double whammy!
BONUS TESTS
PEC TEST: If you Pecs are tight, they pull you forward into a hunchback posture, so make sure you test your Pec muscles to ensure it isn't causing a kyphotic thoracic spine.
SCM TEST: When we spend hours with crappy, forward neck posture our SCM muscles (Sternocleidomastoid) can get very tight. It's a common cause of bad neck posture, so make sure you test yours and starting stretch it to correct your posture as quickly as possible.

Years ago, I had a Siamese cat like yours, and he not only followed me everywhere, but he circled beneath and around me any time I exercised. Of course, this video brought tears to my eyes. I miss him so. Good luck with your beautiful--and exceptional baby; I will be thinking of him often.

How lovely. I noticed your avatar. Our boy, Sebastián, is an amazing cat. Follows us everywhere too. He's incredibly affectionate. And loves car trips. I'm sure he thinks he's a dog. We go for walks with him every day with a lead and harness. (He has no fear of anything and would just walk in front of cars if he didn't have his harness.) I think once you've had a Siamese there's no going back. 😻❤️
@janechambers9980
@janechambers9980 Год назад
@@BodyFixExercises No going back after Siamese? My cats would beg to differ! Yes, my Smitti was the light of my life; he could do tricks, walk on a leash, and comfort me when my husband suddenly left me. But I survived, and from then on, Smitti hated everyone else but me. Now, I have Copper (orange tabby) who is everyone's favorite cat. My neighbor calls him the golden retriever of cats; she says he should have his own Internet channel. He greets strangers at the door, follows them until they acknowledge him, then escorts them wherever they go. I have other cats, also, but Copper loves and looks after everyone, even my former foster kittens who followed him constantly (much to their mother's chagrin!)

As a gamer who has been getting back into fitness, it has become the most aparrent thing for me. How my neck sort of just leaps from the rest of my body forward. I noticed some real good tension during his wall exercise, and after going crazy on them, even walking into the mirror, I instantly noticed a difference. I can feel the slight discomfort in my neck still from not having forced it in such a position in awhile. Amazing video. Will be doing this daily with my workout stretches to get long term results! Sorry but I couldn't really tell those things for a specific case without seeing the actual person and examining them. You can usually change your posture anywhere between 2 months and 12 months depending on the case, how bad it is, and how much you work on it. Most cases can get rid of a neck completely but some can't because the shape of the bones is part of the problem

Thanks a ton for your videos, in the sphinx position I feel that my forarms most than nothing are doing an effort (but I also feel it on the neck/back, but way less) is that normal? Are you standing with the arms open to the same length as your shoulders? Or are you doing a kind of V with the arms? Thanks lot
@BodyFixExercises
@BodyFixExercises Год назад
For this exercise, the arm position is less important. Use whatever arm position that allows to to feel it working your base of neck/mid back more. My arms are usually parallel with my torso in the Sphinx position. Try different levels of mid back arch too. Aim to feel it between your shoulder blades as you pull back/retract your neck. You may have a lot of mid back restriction and that may be why you don't feel it stretch or move much in the sphinx position, but that should improve with time, especially if you do the towel exercise first

Can this be done with 1. A cervical fusion (traction pillows hurt me and I freak out the screws are loosening and then I can’t swallow for a while) 2. Straightening of the lordosis? My neck goes forward but then my spine is extremely straight. Chin tucks are excruciating for me

I wouldn't do this with cervical fusion

I am a 69 year old female. I hsve hunchback and forward head posture so bad. I have a bone protruding at the base of my neck. A little girl said I looked like a turtle. I've gone to the chiropractor, physical therapy therapy and I try so hard. I hurt my rhomboid back in 1987 and since then I have this so bad. I have never seen anyone that looks like mine. I stopped wearing shirts that exposed my upper back. Finally I said no more and I bought some tank tops. I workout at least 6 days a week and average around 30-35 miles a week walking. I wish I could find help.

I think I think you would be surprised by what you could do if you dedicate yourself to a regular exercise routine for improving your postural issues. (The exception to this is that with some people with osteoporosis the front of the vertebra collapse and that changes the posture. This is something you could check for with a upper thoracic x-ray from the side.) Have you looked at these yet? it's not clear what the towel is doing in exercise one. I am assuming that the fat end of the cone is by the top of your back and the thin end is down the bottom and that the flap is over on the right hand side shoulder. what does this asymmetrical shape do?
@BodyFixExercises
@BodyFixExercises Год назад
There shouldn't be a fat end and a thin end. Both ends should be similar. The flap is just excess towel so that the towel roll doesn't end up being too big. It shouldn't be thick enough to worry about. The towel roll goes directly down the center of the back, under the spine. The top end should be just below the neck.

Guys heres some facts thatll change your life, dont focus on one area, and fix your breathing, breathing with your neck muscles in the front and breathing into your upper chest causes postural issues and especially forward head posture bc its pulling your neck into your chest, learn to breathe better, use your diaphram and fix your hip tightness, look into the stack, the stack is where your pelvic floor and diaphram are are parallael to the floor and aligned with one another diaphram right on top of pwlvic floor, this way you can breathe optimally and your posture will improve. Just doing localized exceriez like this dont fix your real issue that is at the root of your poor posture.

what would be a realistic expectation of improvement if these exceresizes are all done like a circuit 3x a week for a mild condition neck hump?

Aim at 5 days a week. Especially weekdays if you're at a computer all day.

This has been an issue for me most of my life. I'm 6'6" and have bent over to speak to people since I was a teenager. Now in my senior years I'm even more aware and wish I could reverse this. It broadcasts my age!!! Ugh!

Being high certainly makes us more prone to this. And I'm with you. I do these religiously now to prevent the stooping that can come with age (IF you're not proactive). It never to late to start!

Is it more difficult to correct a neck hump and posture the older you are? I'm 44 and wondering if its too late!
@BodyFixExercises
@BodyFixExercises Год назад
It does get a little harder but it's never too late to improve it. Sometimes you can't improve it 100% if the Bones have degenerated and changed the shape slightly but at 44 I would think that you should still be able to fix it completely. It'll just take a bit longer compared to someone who's 24
