After we took 3 weeks off we are back in the garage with the 1985 Nissan 300ZX Turbo making some simple improvements that make old cars like this WAY more useable IRL. First up we add a door lock actuator and keyless entry kit. Next up we tackle the fuel level power source as it had a bad connection in the connector. Then I pretty much had to wire up a new head unit from scratch! I ran new speaker wires to all four corners and even had to grab power from the fuse box!
Knowing how much gas you have, having some tunes, and easily locking the car when parked turn an old 80's car from a pain into a more useable functional car! Which means you can drive and enjoy them even more!

I had a 1984 300 2+2 it was awesome...non turbo but i felt so cool in it... Yours is so awesome, its a Timeless way ahead of its time car!... Your wife is awesome, she adores you and your talent

I'mma let you in on a secret of owning Z31's for 12 years. Barely lift the door handle with your ring/pinky finger as you turn the key. 😉

For the problem with speaker wires in the GLL, I also have a gll and the conclusion I came to was that the negatives and positives are tapped into eachother somewhere ubder the carpet and those spots were different between the years I believe too

Also if u take the og speaker wire where they come out at the door on the driver side and tap them in to the new wire at the end the speakers will work and it’ll still have bitchin betty

Hey man awesome video! I started working on a Z I bought months ago I havent watched your whole series but a few things I would check for rust and severe wear are all of your tensioners, your quarter panels especially under the mud flaps and the spare wheel well. Good luck and great videos! :)

I’ve got a lot of experience with the Z31 300zx platform, that box you was messing with for the gas gauge is actually the digital dash power supply. 99% of the time if it goes out no just one gauge goes out, usually the hole dash will, it’ll flash and each gauge will slowly quit working

Luckily the magic box seems to still be kicking, but only time will tell I guess. Thanks for the info. I love this car but I'm not gonna lie... I kinda want the next project to be 100% analog.... like a beetle or something LOL

Thanks for another informative video. One question… on the headliner, what’s that black plastic box? I constantly hear buzzing sound from mine.

There is SO much crazy stuff hiding all over these cars. Depending on your model, I believe you have your dome/map lights, a temp sensor for the climate controls, and a sensor for the compass if you have one. No idea why anything would be buzzing though lol. The map lights with the little vent looking thing are just held in with small tabs if you wanna give it a tug it should pop right off if you wanna check it out.

Does your power steering leak too?? I’m 17 and have a 1985 z31 that leaks I’ve replaced the boot and hose but I think it may be the rack and pinion

YES! it definitely is leaking internally from the rack. I think rockauto offers a rebuild service but obviously your car will be down for a while if you yank it out and send it for a rebuild.

Hey huge fan and I was curious since you seem pretty handy but I have a 1988 300zx and my z has a battery drain i replaced the battery , terminals ends, starter, ect but everyday my car needs a another jump any idea what could be draining the power I have the secuity fuses pulled and no lights are left on so im just losted any idea? or even if you dont know how can i diagnose it? thanks in advanced love you 300zx series

Honestly the easiest way to track down a drain is to pull the positive cable off the battery, get a cheap voltmeter and set it to measure amperage, connect it between the battery positive and the cars positive cable (voltmeter positive to battery positive, voltmeter negative to cars positive battery cable), you will probably see it trying to pull a few amps if it does have a drain. Then simply pull one fuse at a time till it drops under an amp. Then you atleast know which fuse has the drain and you can work on tracking it down from there. If it's not an important system you can drive around without the fuse in and not worry about getting stranded!

@@iOldFasionGamer Keep in mind auto parts stores have some decent rental tools. Example, O'Rielly's has an "Amp Hound". You just take this tool, touch it to a fuse, and it will tell you in that circuit is drawing amperage enough to kill a battery.
