It was always funny in high school on the east coast in the mid-late 90s, when people would ask me what my favorite Nirvana song was and then they would stare at me blankly when I told them it was Aneurysm. People had ABSOLUTELY NO CLUE Incesticide was an album that existed, which is absolutely insane to think about. I remember the like week at my high school where people discovered Bleach (this was after Cobain's death). So that lead to some funny conversations.

Man. So many underrated Cobain riffs, as crazy as that is to say. Aneurysm is by far my favorite song. Milk It features an absolute banger of a riff. A lot of their lesser heard songs are amazing, Sappy (also known as: Verse, Chorus, Verse) being a great example.

I never understood 2 and 3 string power chords. Some songs i see tabbed as 2 string power chords ( like this one ) and others use 3 string power chords. Is there a right and wrong way? Also Polly was played using power chords, The album and live versions. Not that your way sounds bad but Kurt was a simple player and mainly used power chords even with his clean stuff.
@Logan-nw3gf
@Logan-nw3gf 2 года назад
a power chord has two notes, the root and the fifth. a two string power chord just uses those two notes. a three string power chord uses those two notes, plus the root again, an octave higher. for example, a G power chord is comprised of G (root) and D (5th). if you play it on 3 strings, your playing G, then D, then G an octave higher.

You don't have to be a virtuoso- if you're the perfect guy to come along at the perfect time, it just works. Kurt was exactly what music needed at that time, he saw what others didn't see and his authenticity was palpable. For hating fame and the entertainment industry as much as he eventually did, he pursued his success ferociously and put every drop of blood in his body into his music. He spoke to a generation that previously hadn't been spoken to and it was intoxicating for them. Outside of Lennon and McCartney, I don't think you'll find a more naturally gifted songwriter, with a feel for what people wanted to hear and how they really felt- even if he said his lyrics were lazily thrown together...I bet they were, but they didn't need to be well thought out as long as he was speaking from the heart. To be able to grab the pulse of the youth like that, is something special. We haven't really seen a true "rockstar" since Cobain and I don't know if we will again. A true, singer/songwriter, guitarist, frontman of a nuclear band? At the top of the charts worldwide? Just doesn't happen anymore, he's iconic. And for way more than just Hot Topic t-shirts.. Because of how great his music in general was, his guitar playing is just a bonus to me. And having said that, I think a lot of his stuff is very unorthodox and cool. It's like an animal with an injury in the wild that adapted some pretty crazy methods to survive. Sure, there are better ways to do it, but the little tricks they used were very smart and creative. Classical training might have steered him away from some of the things he ended up putting in his music..he's was truly a product of his own creation.. He's like the final form of the garage rocker, what all 8th grade kids playing AC/DC licks and power chords hope to eventually evolve into lol. He influenced me beyond belief, one of the best to ever do it, no question..

Great Video! A side notes tho - your guys' version of the Smells Like Teen Spirit Riff and the All Apologies Riff IMHO are completely wrong. Here's how I think Kurt played them: SLTS: Kurt did this thing where he took his index and ring fingers of his fretting hand (right hand, because he was a lefty) and barred the strings completely across the fretboard. That was just his way of playing power chords. Another thing was that when he strummed the guitar, he would sometimes hit the 4th interval of the 3rd & 2nd strings, which turn the power chords into SUSPENDED 4TH & MAJOR CHORDS, not power chords without the octave, I might add! He also would start the riff with an upstroke, not a downstroke. ALL APOLOGIES: Kurt never played All Apologies in Drop D. Heck, even the entirety of in Utero is NOT in Drop D in ANY WAY. Instead, it's in D# Standard and DROP C# (the correct tuning for all All Apologies). He also would hit the 6th string on the "&" of the 2nd beat to give it a "fuller" sound. Hopefully this helps to improve your channel and company in learning NIRVANA!

Sorry to be a grinch and sure, you can play them like this if you like but this is not how Kurt played them. Anyone want to know how message me and I'd be happy to give you a lesson over zoom at a reasonable price. I'd say I know about 50% of his stuff off the top of my head.. anything else I'd have to refresh my memory and figure them out before teaching them to others. If you are a relative beginner there are some Cobain habits and chord shapes you need to understand and learn before you can play his stuff and it sound authentic. After that it's pretty straight forward. Anyone who can already play to a certain level and understands his chord shape preferences, how he mutes with both hands etc should just watch footage of him playing the songs they want to learn.. If you have a half decent ear and keep at it when it gets unconventional it shouldn't be too hard to figure out. Peace.
