@@Jeffs60 would also consider that oranges are viewed differently within Chinese culture, as a sign of good luck. Maybe if the peels of quality oranges/citrus are safe to eat, then the limonene within could help break down cholesterol. I've eaten incredibly well grown fresh ones, also minneolas, with the peels on, before, and loved them. Some oranges had adverse effects though, I'm considering where one could pick fresh naturally grown wild ones. Also, if the health benefits can be that great, then the fact they're called lucky is likely because luck and chance are synonymous, and the positive effects are like getting another chance, or better odds of having good health

I’m from Norway. We do eat a lot of wild caught protein, ranging from elk,salmon/trout, birds (rype, duck) and more. We eat a lot of potato as well and it’s the regular kind and not the sweet potato. Then there’s bread, we’re huge consumers and have bread for breakfast and lunch usually. Also for the evening. The exception is dinner - potato time:))and usually we don’t consume the white bread, well, only sometimes like in the summer with lots of fresh prawns (or wild caught crab)on it, some mayo, a squeeze of lemon and a beer:) Usually we have the darker types of bread and we put on healthy stuff like liver pâté, mackerel, herring, sardines, scrambled eggs with gravlaks on top, fish caviar, smelly cheeses, nice cuts of different meats and greens to go with that. My mouth is watering as I’m writing here, I’m an expat. Then you have all the other factors someone else already pointed out, working hours, working conditions, healthcare system, welfare system etc Additionally, many of us are raised up on cod liver oil

In addition, the standards for food are much higher. For example, meat that is sold in Germany cannot be imported into Switzerland. Also people are moving so much, they love skieng, hiking ....

Actually in Sweden, sweet potato is not so common but we LOVE our regular potatoes! Some of the immigrants married to Swedes complain about that and say that we have potatoes with every main meal. We eat potatoes like the Asians eat rice. And we have a very good balance between work and leisure time and take a lot of breaks at work so we are not so stressed and I think that stress really cut years of life.

Well-said with that last sentence. American life and health began a steep and endless nose dive in the late 70's when greedy companies changed their "personnel" managers to "Human Resource" managers and started to relentlessly exploit their employees (using fear of layoff as a motivator) to make them start "volunteering" endless amounts of their precious personal time as uncompensated "after work free time" to " the Company". During my 45 year career, I averaged ten and twelve hour days for most days of most weeks worked and 75-100 days of annual travel for 30 of those years. When the CEO, President or VP says he wants you to "fix it", you go. As one boss put it early on, " if you don't go and fix this problem, you, I and my boss - all three of us will lose our jobs". Fear is the great motivator, lol. I was never ever financially compensated for any of these sacrifices, but did receive a lot of paper awards, plaques and trophies from Executives and CEO's. I have large boxes full of them somewhere at home. And my wife left me in 2003 with a great deal of financial debt and two devastated teenagers to raise by myself. My divorce lawyer told me that St. Louis was going through an 80% divorce rate, with almost all of the divorces initiated by the wife and most of her clients were men working at my company. Exactly like the Engineer character of the 1993 Michael Douglas movie "Falling Down", all of us men thought we were playing by "the rules" - being a "good, responsible man, providing for his family, serving his employer and country". Most of my close married friends on the same high profile programs that I worked went through divorce, serious financial and health problems (heart problems, diabetes, cancer, etc.). I watched one good friend literally drop down and die on the floor of the hallway at work from a heart attack. Other close friends from brain cancer, prostate cancer - all in their 50's. I went through 45 days of radiation for prostate cancer discovered toward the end of my career - luckier than most and still surviving at 69. Like that guy in "Falling Down", we were all extremely proud of the work we performed (we worked in the military aircraft division) for Boeing. We were all repeatedly told that we were making the whole world a safer place. One solution to the American health crisis would be for our federal government to prohibit companies from accepting unpaid "free time" from exempt or hourly non-union employees. Now with the trend of employees being told to "work at home", there is an open door to even further unchecked employee exploitation. Unfortunately, such legislation won't happen while the Democrats are in power, since their party, once the party of the "middle class", was "bought and sold" by the Wall Street Bankers and Global Corporations during Bill Clinton's 8 years in the White House (he signed NAFTA and GATT and accelerated this mess by sending our high paying jobs to Mexico, Canada and China. Please forgive my rant. You are indeed fortunate to live in your country.

@@carlosoliveira-rc2xt Oxalates effects in the body can be neutralized by binding them using dairy ( the high calcium present there binds to oxalate) and also citric acid (squeeze a half lemon in water, that's all). As far as Loma Linda, California goes there is a high percentage of Seventh Day Adventists who live in this area. The principals of the Blue Zones are key. The main reason why Okinawa is no longer a Blue Zone is mainly due to Westernization of diet, food portion size and greater reliance on cars for transportation. The main driving force for these changes are the influences from U.S. military bases.

More than military bases is the profit model of global foods infiltrating over the decades what are on the surface of it Japanese prefered cuisine.. There is a love of corn, but it was never GMO.. pork was a staple, but that is now full of chemicals and bad fats, etc.. the macros are warped and no longer locally grown. Sugar is in everything unless its homemade and there is less and less time for this, or even skill. This happened over generations in peoples homes and became part of their own economies.

Interesting but you really need to look at the whole package - Nordic countries are well known for having less polluted cities, less stressful working weeks, etc. Factors like spending more time outside being active, cycling in cities because it has the infrastructure to do so - cultural factors such as sociability in older age groups (which was also theorised as to one of the factors in Okinawa's long life expectancy) Diet is important, but we are talking about an average of a few years various in most of the developed world. We really don't have any clear science to suggest one traditional diet filled with veg, fruits, & good proteins has clear advantages over another. - The science suggests all traditional diets (mediterranean, Japanese, Scandinavian etc) with less modern connivence foods are always the better option.
@hugoanderkivi
@hugoanderkivi 5 месяцев назад
The actual science from other disciplines suggest the complete opposite. If you look at how our ancestors ate before the First Agricultural Revolution, you'd see that they were carnivorous, even completely in some cases. Stable isotope testing of nitrogen and carbon in human long bones confirms this for a fact. Our genetic maximum lifespan should be around 120-150 years, a marked difference compared to the average lifespan nowadays-people dying middle-aged (60s, 70s, 80s) with years or decades of suffering. We should not be suffering from the diseases we have today; they're unnatural, but we've been convinced to think of it as normal. If you give other animals an inappropriate diet, they will also suffer from very similar diseases compared to us. It's clear we are poisoning ourselves with diet in a magnitude that exceeds any other factor.

The balance point for Hong Kong is right. For family dinner, there will usually be a balance of meat/seafood/tofu and vege dishes. All dishes are for sharing so you dont tend to just indulge on one particular dish. Old people here tend to believe in eating a cleaner diet with less oil and less meat (sometimes too little). Rice consumption has been going down 20-30% for the past 20 years. People are definitely eat a lot less carbs than before. We also get the benefits of importing cheap domestic helpers from Southeast Asian countries so most families dont have to eat out all the time. HK is a very walkable city, like NYC. If you take the subway to work, thats close to 4000 steps roundtrip. There are also plenty of public swimming pools, indoor and outdoor sports centers in all the districts across HK. The last point is the high quality of government healthcare here . People who have emigrated to Canada or the UK would come back to HK if they get something serious like cancer. But as the society is aging, it would be under a lot stress in the next two decades.

You have to be careful sifting data too. I've heard it said that stillborn babies should not be factored in when looking at lifespans. I disagree. Infant mortality, especially high rates, is a huge red flag for the general health in a country. Hong Kong is full of rich people who can afford good health care and lifestyles. Nordic and Swiss people are outdoors a lot, and from what I understand, people living at high altitudes are slimmer in general. People in Switzerland and Germany have basically the same diets, but geographical elevations are different. A similar phenomena happens in Colorado, which is the slimmest place in the US. Check research by Dr. Robert Lustig. And yes, fatty fish rock for clear minds and longevity, not to mention great eye health.

Thanks for this video, veyr informative. However, I have to point out you forgot to mention some extremely important factor from Hongkong: alcohol consumption in Hong Kong is less than half compared to European and North American countries. Hong Kongnians hardly drink alcohol in average compared to other countries whose life expectancy and health is much worse. Alcohol consumption really makes a dent in health and longevity. Thank you again for you video, I realy enjoyed watching it.

Also here in Finland we eat lots of berries and mushrooms that we can pick our self from the forrests. We are the top country of consuming rye bread and we love it here. When i was child (i´m 43 years now) and we were many times in Sweden becouse we had relatives there. It was almost impossible to find rye bread anywhere. Some stores imported it from Finland, but basicly it wasn´t thin in other Nordic countries. Also people didn´t usually like it outside of Finland. This thing sure have changed trough the years and these days you can get it there basicly every store. It is deffenetly much more nutrient, high in fiber and propably healthiest bread you can find (that is made from grains). We have eated it at least 2-3 centuries if not longer. And yes we eat lot of wild sea fishes and lake fishes. Our caddle is grass fed and we have top quality whole foods. We also mostly cook our foods from the scratch. Our nature is one of the cleanest in earth. Deer, reindeer and moose are very tasty and great source of meat. If i get some of those meets i deffenetly buy. All those live and eat in our clean nature so there isn´t better sources of meat. Also from aggriculture here is way different than in US. All meats, poultry, eggs & veggies are very close to organic that there isn´t much of a differences. No chemicals on the veggies and in winters those comes from greenhouses so no need for pestosites. Finland have ranked as happiest country in world five or six years a row. We mostly have good work/life balance and people are much of laid back and relaxed so stress levels are way much lower than in US. People are active and most exercise. Here obese is smaller than most of the "body positive" fat people in US. Even that Insuline resistant and t2d is here common in older people it is still way more less than in US. But still here are same problem that in everywhere these days. and it is too much carbs and some people do eat lot of junk these days. My health improved alot after i started ketogenic lifestyle 10 months ago. I propably had at least insuline resitance for living with too much and too long with carb based diet. Recommendation for carbs for woman is 250 grams a day and for man 300 grams. That is insane! I counted a while back that if i eat every day (well i don´t) all those 20 grams of carbs a day that would be 7,3kg (16,09 lbs) of sugar. But if i would eat recommended 300 grams a day that would be 109,5kg (2414,06 lbs) of sugar 😵‍💫😵! You would propably need to run over the globe to burn all those calories what you gain from that amount of carbs...

As a Hong Konger, one key contributor to our elders long lifespan that was not mentioned is they are on a slight calorie restriction diet. The older generation eats fairly small portion of meat and veg. Mainly due to their frugal upbringing rather than health reasons. And no, they don’t get stir fry food every meal as well. They mainly eat steamed food, such as steamed fish or meatloaf for protein and blanched veg… So I don’t expect our generation to live as long as them, since a lot of the working class buy takeout for dinner everyday and eat loads of carbs. By the way, life span doesn’t equal health span. The older folks still plagued with diabetes, Alzheimer’s, clogged arteries etc the typical metabolic disease. Of course, I don’t have the figure to back up if how much better or worse we are compared to outer places…

The Lord Jesus Christ became the Savior of sinners (all humans) by coming down from Heaven & dying on the 🪵 wooden cross for our sins. God raised Him from the dead, and Jesus is now a living Savior with God in heaven. But don't lose hope. Anyone can be saved from their sins and from going to hell in two easy, peasy steps: 1. Realize that you are a sinner who CAN'T SAVE YOURSELF from going to the lake of fire (forever) 🔥 based on your good deeds, your own philosophy, and other religions. 2. Realize that you need to believe in your heart ❤️ that ONLY Jesus Christ died for your sins. If you shall confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus, and shall believe in your heart ❤️ that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart ❤️ man believe unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. Congratulations! 🎊 👏 After this life, you're on your way to heaven forever! ⬆️💯🥳

In Finland diet was very different before seventies fat revolution to seed oils and imported fruit was available. It was lot of grains, milk, butter, roots and fatty meat. Some low fat lake fish. Rarely fruit, but often wild berries. Now functional stomach malfunctions and over weight are common.

As of 2002 there were 34.7 centenarians in Japan for every 100,000 inhabitants, which is the highest ratio worldwide. Santrock, John W. A (2002). Topical Approach to Life-Span Development (4 ed.). New York: McGraw-Hill. Then in 2016 according to the World Economic Forum, Japan has the most centenarians per capita (mostly concentrated in Okinawa), followed by Puerto Rico and then Italy (mostly concentrated in Sardinian region-a blue zone). Then in 2020 the top four places with the most centenarians are all island nations, according to a study from Lottie, a digital marketplace for older adults seeking care. First place goes to Guadeloupe, an archipelago in the Caribbean where there are 299 centenarians - or 75 per 100,000 people. That’s an increase of about 80% since 2000. The French territory is followed by its Caribbean neighbors - Barbados and Martinique - in second and third place, respectively. In Barbados there are 71 centenarians per 100,000 and in Martinique there are 63. Japan and Uruguay are tied for fourth, each with 62 people over 100 for every 100,000. Then Puerto Rico came in 6th (since the other two countries tied), followed by Hong Kong in 7th place. Then in 2021 according to World Atlas Japan is the country with the highest rate of centenarians, at 6 for every 10,000 people or approximately 0.06 percent. Uruguay, Hong Kong and Puerto Rico are also home to some of the highest levels of centenarians compared to population with rates between 0.06 and 0.045 percent. The United States has the highest actual count (97,000), but Japan has the highest per capita at 79,000 centenarians and the second highest in absolute numbers.

Nobody is right 100 percent so better to do your research and track your results to come up with a program for you, or find a naturopath or similar person to do it for you. Following a universal program might be ok and probably way better than standard diet, but bound to have some issues. Do bloodwork yearly and individualize your program.

Right on the mark! Can’t rely on these blue zone nonsense at all. I’ve traveled a lot, been to most of the countries he’s talking about. Generally know how people live and feel. So many things he can’t feel or live or understand that is not present in statistical papers. It’s really idiotic to talk about. And you are not a country. A human being trying to base health practices like they are a nation is absurd. 🤷‍♂️. It’s nature of RU-vid and don’t blame him or anything… it is what it is. But yeah, so much of this is speculation based on correlated data without economic or financial factors of nations built in, or their histories or their culture, or population’s attitudes. Asian people in general I would say as an Asian care more about living longer. Intelligence is also a huge factor in longevity. Smarter people live longer… so, we look at US education system and bam. People who want to live longer will go out of their way to guess what liver longer. Japanese were forced to calorie restrict for sheer economic reasons for decades. Same with most Asian countries. Eating massive amounts of Taurine from seafoods. Hiking and walking is practiced a lot in Asian countries. So many variables that him talking about meat consumption in all that becomes laughable really. Eating stir fry? Really??? Look up any stir fry cooks and look at the massive amounts of oil they pour in. It’s like half a cup of oil per dish! What will happen when China has more influence than the west in Hong Kong in coming years? What happens if their money dries up? So many factors. That talking about eating wild game??? It’s nonsensical.

from HK here - we are a small city with an aging population - a lot of them walk EVERYWHERE they go (we have a super connected public transport system and special fare for the elderly) and the weather is also less extreme (it rains but you can walk everywhere all year round). It is the step count. Air quality is bad and as a small port we don't have a lot of local foods most food is imported yet affordable. Seriously, the study should also look at these factors also along with BMI. There are things not taken into account in the blue zone studies, for example obesity in the population in these 5 countries/ cities...etc

I think genetics is a major factor. All of these blue zones are somewhat isolated communities (islands etc) with a limited gene pool. That is probably a major factor. Also I don't think you can really replicate "blue zone" diet/lifestyle in your own life. For example take one of the blue zones, Ikaria greece. There are numerous islands close to Ikaria with similar weather, lifestyle, diet etc yet they are not blue zones.

Sweet potatoes in Norway, yeah, not so much. The Yellow Finn white potato is so popular over there it's practically it's OWN food group. But, the bread is wholesome and fiber rich, the butter is amazing, grass fed deep gold bliss, and the seafood and game choices are top notch. Adding to that, a popular saying is "there is no bad weather, only a bad choice of clothing", so they go out and are active, rain, snow or shine.

Yes, quality food and good friends and family life pay a large role in longevity, but equally important is reducing your level of worry. This includes having free tuition at Universites, sound health insurance, affordable day care centers, enough free time to enjoy a hobby of your choice and to cook a proper meal and no run away inflation in your country.

Fatty fish and dairy contain animal amino acids strongly associated with IGF1 and MTOR. That's why only low amounts help (perhaps likely for the omega 3 and gut bacteria). Low fat diary is better bc no saturated fat.

Nordic countries are always on the top of the lists of happiest countries, so no shock that they live longer. Stress, $, isolation and highly processed food diet are factors for US numbers sadly dropping like a rock. So many of the longevity studies are flawed. Thank you, Thomas, for shining a light on the changes in the data and to stop trotting out these old study results.

It’s actually not true. I lived in Scandinavia for a decade and the truth is that they lie. Their culture teaches them to say they are happy regardless if they are or not. Most of them are not happy and many are alcoholics. The cancer rate is through the roof. I love Scandinavians, don’t get me wrong, my sons live there and grew up there, they will say the same as me. They don’t like to admit they aren’t happy to strangers. They even wear dark neutral colors so they don’t stand out. They keep their heads down and don’t greet each other. However, ask them if they’re happy and they will defend their happiness to the death. (Iceland, Faroe Islands, Denmark ….those are the countries I lived in and speak all 3 fluently)

When they compiled the data on Okinawa it was after WW2 and basicly the people were on a starvation diet. They are a big pork eating country but during the war the majority of the pig had been killed or confiscated by the japanese army, leaving then but no choice but to eat more sweet potatoe. This caused a collection of info that was basicly wrong as to what the real diet had been before the war.

The issue @4:45 is the incentive to not report the death of an elderly person. Japan keeps paying retirement benefits to the deceased, and their caretakers do not report the death in order to keep collecting benefits. Longevity in Japan is overstated.
