Some much needed good advice here. I’ve talked to so many people recently about behavior-based feeding/feeding based on the totality of the circumstances and NOT on a set schedule! It’s on my own list of videos topics to do.

Explaining snakes diet to people is very hard, you actually did it correctly. I have a 50% dwarf and I keep her diet varied in prey size.

As for meal size, what do you think of using the speed at which the lump goes away to determine appropriateness? Eg if they look completely normal in 24 or 36 hours, that's a medium size meal, if they look normal in 12 hours or less that's small, and if they look normal in 48 hours or more that's big?

Excellent information. I think it is also good to give different types of prey. I give my carpet pythons alternating feeds on rodents and chicks. My boa constrictor amarali usually has rats, but I give her the occasional quail as well. In my experience, most snakes will eat till they explode, and I reckon overfeeding is far too common.

I've got an 8ft dwarf retic that has an extreme feeding reponse. No matter how many times I tap she come flying out teeth first and wraps and constricts as soon as you touch her. What's the best way to break this? The previous owner said he gave her more food to work around it. Any tips will be greatly appreciated.

We actually just did a video where Garrett shows how he works with one of our larger animals that has a similar response. I hope it is helpful for you! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-F_IBmKAHF0M.html

Do you start getting females use to a heavier feeding schedule leading up to breeding as a sub adult or after reaching sexual maturity? PS Lol @ (and Zak Nava) I didn't know there was a footnote level support option.

Garrett actually did a whole video specifically about this that should answer your question. Here's the link ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cQzZbj9W_rI.html

I'm a little concerned that my supposedly 62.5% Kalaotoa GC is growing a bit too fast, and I'm worried that its my fault. 'Jeeves' is 13 months old and about 6.5' long with a girth of 2". Does that seem on track for his locality %? I'm feeding him a med. rat every 5 days; perhaps 2 if he 's fasted for a couple weeks during shed. I recorded an astonishing 1" per week growth since I got him last Oct. His body is just perfect for all the metrics you mentioned so, am I feeding him properly? I'd be much obliged for your comment. Oh and obviously I love your channel! Keep it up!
@whitneybuxton6162
@whitneybuxton6162 4 года назад
Personally I'd say thats astronomically too fast. I have a mainland female that gets an adult mouse every 10 days. She's about 9 months old and 3.5 feet long. If you have a supposedly SD locality that's even bigger than my ML female at such a similar age you might be overfeeding. I feed my girl according to her breeder's recommendations and body composition so while my way may be on the light side she's definitely not underfed, and that still makes you snake's growth questionable genetically I'd think.
@ReachOutReptiles
@ReachOutReptiles 4 года назад
The goal in feeding is always to provide prime nutrition and should never be to control the growth of an animal (the genetic element does that). Your animal's size will ultimately be controlled by it's bloodline and the effort on the part of the breeder to work towards selectively breeding smaller snakes. I know we have never produced a goldenchild of that particular percentage, so without knowing anything about your animal's bloodline I can't really say if it is fast or slow.

So is your general feeding weekly for neo's then more spaced out as juvenile or wait until adulthood? I know very little about retics and their growth needs.
@littlevillagepythons9636
@littlevillagepythons9636 4 года назад
I believe its neo-6 months every week 6m-2yr every 10 days 2yr-3yr every 14 days 3yr every three weeks 4yr every month
@ReachOutReptiles
@ReachOutReptiles 4 года назад
Starting with weekly feeding is generally ok with most animals and then spacing it out as they begin to look a little chunky to maintain proper body shape is the way to go. The point of this video is not to follow a scientifically set schedule, but rather know when and how to adapt your feeding schedule according to your animal's health ;)
@ReachOutReptiles
@ReachOutReptiles 4 года назад
@Little Village Pythons That's a pretty good starting point for pure locality superdwarves, but assuming that beyond 3 years you are referring to a female which you plan to cycle for breeding by feeding heavily for part of the year. I think a consistent schedule of every 4 weeks is probably too little food in most circumstances. Again, it depends on many factors and applying a straight forward schedule like this to all situations may not always be appropriate.
