How Much DOES a Super Dwarf Retic Cost?

Anytime a picture a nice animal is shared on social media, the most frequently asked question is PRICE? But the industry is beginning to shift in a big way, as society itself is changing beneath us. Garrett speaks from a Reticulated Python breeder's perspective on how much it costs to have a dwarf or Superdwarf Retic, and runs a comparison of Mainland vs. Super Dwarf Retic.
The terms "Dwarf Reticulated Python" and "Super Dwarf Reticulated Python" are used to describe Reticulated pythons of the subspecies Satuprai and Jampeanus, along with crosses of these subspecies into mainland reticulated pythons to refine the amazing array of genetic morphs within that species, and reduce their size to something more suited to a life with humans. Unfortunately, these terms are often used to mislead uneducated buyers into purchasing snakes with insufficient Dwarf and SD influence (lower than 50% Dwarf/SD Blood), or by completely misrepresenting larger grow Retics altogether!
Pure locality Dwarf and Super Dwarf Retics from the Selayer, Jampea, Kayuadi, Kalatoa, Madu, and Karompa islands of Indonesia form a group represented by two unique subspecies of Reticulated python that have actually adapted to live in harsh environments with their diminutive size- packing all the intelligence, confidence, and incredibly beautiful color and pattern of the world's longest snake into a tiny little package, some being even as small as corn snakes! Unfortunately, they are still quite rare in captivity, and difficult to find.
At Reach Out Reptiles we dedicate ourselves completely to Dwarf and Super Dwarf Reticulated pythons like no one else in the world! We want everyone to be able to learn about this little known and under-appreciated, misunderstood, and highly misrepresented group of animals without all the politics and personal agendas being pushed by sellers. Stay awhile, and connect with us, and the WILD within you that really makes you HUMAN!

Great to see someone who is really supporting the best environments for the snakes! Wonderful analogies, maybe in 5-10 years I’ll be ready for a superdwarf, right now I’m prepping for my first children’s python; the price point and size are going to mean it has a wonderful enclosure and I’m excited to see the behavior it’ll exhibit once it can be in the larger enclosure

I agree 100%. Super Dwarfs are much more cost-effective than Mainlands. I can't imagine trying to move 40 Mainland babies and possibly ending up keeping that many by default. I honestly don't know how Jay Brewer does it. He seems to be hatching new clutches every week. Could you do a video showing examples of the pure localities of Super Dwarfs you have?
@ReachOutReptiles
@ReachOutReptiles 5 лет назад
Selling/buying babies is a very different thing than raising those babies to adulthood. If PPets sells all the babies they make, then blaming them for all the unwanted older Retics is kind of like blaming McDonald's for making us fat. Until we each learn to consider the impact of our actions, we won't see any real improvement in the quality of life for these animals.

Crazy thang about is so your telling me u don't raise your own food for your snakes that's free then enclosure just sell the mainlands at a crazy rate so there for your SD can go there so let's just say Free but still charge someone an arm and a leg for something twisted as small for 1k if not more yea sure u will have some people buy it to mean the u seem money hungry in my opinion sure u love the snakes but would u sell other types of snakes like just a corn no I think not when u basically spend for your hole set up of the snakes u have maybe what 300 $ and the end of the month then just one snake be 1k hmmmm alot of money lol but hey when someone else comes along with same value but drops the price and u wonder what happened that's what happened

Great topic, clear explanation. Totally get it. I often wonder about Jay at Prehistoric Pets, and how he moves the hundreds and hundreds of retics he produces every year. I would much rather own a dwarf retic than a mainland. I would have a much greater chance of still owning it until the end of its life because of the manageable size vs people who have a mainland and opt out after it reaches 10 feet. Who will be rescuing or rehoming all of these once popular mainland animals.

Great topic Garrett and I really don't think the price should be a big priority when someone is passionate about getting and raising any snake that they are really interested in keeping !! Excellent association with real estate makes perfect sense !! Let me tell you I raised a Mainland from a baby til 9 years old at 18 feet in length and it cost plenty but then again handling one on a regular basis reduces the need for any extra physical exercise outside of the snake room !! ROFL I would have seriously considered getting a sward or super dwarf at that time !! LOL This is exactly why I've not bred my two huge Argentine Boas the lack of knowledge and experience so many have with them and the lack of demand because they get so huge !!
@ReachOutReptiles
@ReachOutReptiles 5 лет назад
I agree, but I really wanted to show people what they are getting into. Some folks have a hard time coming up with $300 to purchase an animal, then I hope they will realize a properly kept mainland will be way out of their budget.

I haven't seen any superdwarf retics for sale at the expo's here in Sweden, not really on the online platforms either, so I felt super lucky as I actually found a sales ad for a few young ones on the biggest reptile website we have here in Sweden. It turned out that the breeder lived in Poland even if he advertised on the Swedish page. My boy cost me 242€, and I sadly couldn't go to the big expo in Hamm (Germany) to pick him up myself since I had work this past weekend, but a very kind gentleman who was going to Hamm brought him to Sweden for me for a very reasonable transport fee. I paid 800 SEK, which is around 72$. Then I also had to travel a bit here in Sweden to meet up with the gentleman who picked him up for me, so over all I paid around 86$ to get him home. Feels very fair to me since it would've most likely cost me more if I had gone to pick him up in Germany. The documents in the sales ad showed a birth date of the 2nd of February 2020, so I bought a pretty big enclosure to make sure it would be big enough for my boy and so he'd be able to have it for a while before I had to upgrade it, but turns out I made an oopsie. The birth date on the document in the ad wasn't for this clutch. It was only an example so I would know what the documents I would receive looks like. The breeder had done this pairing before, resulting in a clutch 2020, so the document I saw in the ad actually belonged to my boys older brother, same parents, just an earlier clutch. My boy was born on March 9th 2023, so he's only 6 months old. I realized my mistake when I met up with the guy who picked him up for me and saw how tiny my boy is. That made really worried for a moment before I checked the papers ^ ^' I don't mind at all that he's younger than I thought tough. It's actually even more fun for me that he's this young and tiny, I like watching them grow~ And hey, the terrarium I bought for him will still work. It will be like a huge mansion for him, but I bet he will love that. I will fill it with all sorts of fun stuff for him. Clutter it up so he won't feel exposed and vulnerable in there. I will get his terrarium delivered to me tomorrow. Typically I have it ready before the snakes comes home, but it's fine this time, he's in his quarantine tub right now anyway. I always quarantine new additions. The terrarium cost me a little under 200$ but then you of course need to add things like lighting, heating, hides, substrate, plants and all that other good stuff, so I think I've spent roughly 300$ on the terrarium so far, and I will probably spend a bit more since I want my baby to feel comfortable in there and have lots of enrichment. I've named my boy Dazai after Dazai Osamu from the anime Bungo Stray Dogs. He's 78% Superdwarf (Madu locality) and he's a tiger~ I'm completely smitten with him. He's so gorgeous, and I love how you can see how he's thinking. I also didn't realize just how colorful these guys really are until I saw Dazai up close yesterday when I moved him to his quarantine tub. Dazai also seem to be super chill for a baby snake. He was a little hesitant as I first grabbed him since I'm a new person to him, but no hissing, no S-ing up, just a tiny bit of stiffness at first. He tongue flicked and watched me for a moment, but as soon as he realized that I made no attempts to hurt him he began to relax and move around, and when he noticed that it was safe to do so with me he went into full explore mode, almost seeming disappointed as I put him away, so I have a very good feeling about him. Right now he's exploring his quarantine tub just a few feet away from me, climbing between the two perches I put in it. A while ago he was laying on top of his hide though, seeming to just be checking me out while I had dinner ^ ^

Is the price list at the beginning comparable to 2022 prices?

I like, *over enjoyed* this and now have 500 ideas running around in my brain! Are you thinking of popping over to Hamburg PA on December 1st? We aren’t sure if we can make it; otherwise we’ll go with what you & I spoke of...also, vlog brought up a lot of deep memories I have of the home my grandfather built. He loved ALL animals 💛💯

Are prices similar to this video still or have things gone up?
@ReachOutReptiles
@ReachOutReptiles Год назад
This was precovid, so they have changed quite a bit. Some have gone down, others up. Not a really simple answer type question, but if you email us at info@reachoutreptiles.com with any specific details, we are happy to get you a full list of pricing options that match what you’re looking for in a Dwarf/ SD Retic.

Love that snake in your video let me know when you have one of them available that's what I'm looking for.....or maybe one that gets a little larger not much though
@ReachOutReptiles
@ReachOutReptiles 5 лет назад
I keep a waiting list for people who are interested in these animals- that's where you want to be if you want to get one. But are you saying you want a Retic stays as big as the yearling pure SD in the video? Like, half the size of a corn snake? That is not in the cards...

another great job and interesting and accurate view on the subject now if you would get Iowa to allow retics (oh they allow Burms explain that one?) that would be great

I think the Iowans are going to have to handle that one. But feel free to use ideas from here!
