You just keep saying the same thing over and over again because I am telling the truth and there are a lot of facts that I have to back me up. But of course, I am the blind one here. No wonder Bachelet got elected with people like you. Now the whole country is sinking in chaos.

I am no expert concerning this subject, but I do find it fascinating. I have done a little reading on my own regarding this case and wonder if perhaps the Republic of Chile might not be the appropriate interlocutor for this particular dispute? I believe there is a 400 year old treaty signed by South American First Nations with the Spanish Crown that establishes certain rights and responsibilities, not between the First Nation groups and the Republic of Chile mind you, but rather with the Spanish Crown itself. Wouldn't this treaty make the Spanish Crown the only VALID arbiter in this generations old dispute? Thoughts anybody?

One other thing-wealthy US nationals with a social justice agenda have started a new fund called Buen Vivir [you can learn more at Regenerative Finance or IDEX] that invests [with generous terms] in indiginous-led enterprises throughout the Americas, putting money behind indigenous rights. So there's definitely some inspiring direct action occurring regarding the meta issues surrounding indigenous rights.

Very insightful for a brief piece. Another microcosm highlighting the struggle between established governments and the resistance of indigenous people to reclaim their land rights. As a U.S. citizen I was unaware that this struggle was taking place in Chile, but this piece goes to show this issue extends to the borders of many regions... Well Done!

I'm in the midst of reading Naomi Klien's "The Shock Doctrine." She's outlining how US-back state-perpetrated terrorism efforts in Central and South America starting with Chile in the '70s explicitly laid the groundwork for "free-market" fundamentalism. I'd be fascinated to learn more about this particular issue. There are so many tragic indigenous conflicts going on all over the world right now.

Yes, a good book. And Pinochet probably the worst criminal when it came to this. The legacy of his brutal, racist, classist oppression is still unfortunately in the Chilean state. But truly excellent news just the other day, with Chileans overwhelmingly voting for leftist, independent, and non-right-wing politicians to draft the new referendum, with 17 positions reserved for indigenous peoples. Hopefully this will be the beginning of a massive reform process.

Pues dn.

I appreciate knowing about this and always like Kyle's easy way of describing complex situations. When we hear that governments are responsible for a huge amount of death and destruction within their own national borders, this is a good way to get a picture of how that happens…and how getting the government out of the way will be an essential part of resolving this conflict because they are the ones who have a vested interest in having these two groups of people fight with each other while their corporate-subsidized logging companies get on with raping the land at both of the waring people’s expense. Thanks for a thoughtful piece, well done.

Totally different ways of life. European descendants say that mapuches are lazy, that they don't work the land. But mapuche met the incas before and, knowing what these peoples had, they didn't want to build big cities and kingdoms like them, they just wanted to live in armony with their land. That's what they still fight for. For us is to maintain unproductive land, for them, to protect the earth, their ancestors and spirits land.

Addressing several peoples' statements, and ignoring their lack of intelligence and empathy I will point that: the state of Chile has persecuted, with unethical laws taylor-made for this matters (see "anti-terrorism law"), mapuche people for more than 20 years. This has been happening ironically since the so called left-tolerant-integration governments, prosecuting them with little or no proof for every incident in the region (including later on proven auto-attacks to get insurances), and labelling them automatically as terrorists, manipulating public opinion and discriminating and segregating them for economic reasons. The timber industry owns more than a million hectares of land in the so called "conflict zone", a land that has been polluted and expanded because of the deforestation that they have caused. Add the fact that no more than around a hundred years, mapuche were being normally abused, enslaved, tortured and killed in the process called "araucania pacification", which was only an institutionalized way to hide a failed genocide (see “Trizano”). Keep working on your “thinking”, fascist idiots. Chile is a rich country that has a place for all points of view, and yes, economic exploitation as well, but why doing it in impairment of people that have an ethical behaviour towards nature?

Ok, let me make something clear that I disagree with. 1: Ever since Chile recognized its independence from Spain, the Chilean government were mostly occupied with crisis and a war (War of the Pacific/ Saltpeter war against Peru and Bolivia) 2: After the start of the 20th Century, Chile needed to tie up its relations with forgery countries to get a better economy. There were more important necessities for the government than worrying about indigenous people (government perspective). 3: During the Cold War, Chile was leading towards a “new” type of communism and United States being the themselves, established a dictatorship, killed, tortured people etc, it was one of the worst dictatorships during the Cold War. PS: The Americans still haven’t said sorry about that. Even though they have violated human right of 600,000 times in Chile just in that Dictatorship of Agusto Pinochet,

As a Chilean (German descent) myself, I must say that the Araucanian Conflict has paid a terrible toll that has resulted many casualties on both sides. War is never the answer obviously and we must come up with a final solution if we want to stop the bloodshed once and for all. For peace sake. I know it is not as easy as it may sound but we are destroying our own people, land, ancestry and traditions. The only way is to come together and embrace our differences.
@mactek6033

Sometimes war IS the answer, but the indigenous people of the New World only understood wars of annihilation because that's what they did with competing tribes. Europeans fought wars as political tools. This is why you had a 300y war. The people with European decent did not have the resolve to fight the natives on their terms.

South Africa only 9-12% of the land is arable. Land is culturally important to the Boer/Afrikaaner settlers who where migrating deeper into the mainland seeking grazing for their cattle and trying to escape the rule of the English empire with the empire forcefully taking over all the new republics. Bantu people basically only settled the interior and north eastern part of the country. in February 2017 the country suffered 30 farm attacks resulting in 15 deaths. The subject is also worth a video with the 3rd largest political party in that country wanting to take land from racially western people without compensation regardless of the background or personal wealth of those individuals. all of this despite Zimbabwes land grabs failing miserably.

That approach usually robs indigenous peoples of their land. See the 1887 Dawes Act in the USA which was an evil crime and a catastrophe for Native Americans, possibly the worst calamity of the last 200 years.

Stop romanticising the mapuche as poor innocent victims!! The situation is not as simple as many think, currently thanks to the indigenous laws, the mapuche have many legal privileges that non-indigenous don't have and being (or as many do, trying to be) a mapuche now is "cool" so I don't think discrimination is still a great thing, of course most mapuche are peaceful people who lives or in the cities or in the countryside and are as Chileans as the other citizens, but there are some communities who belong to the CAM who do terorrism, you can't deny that, with people killed by them and all, not all are "angels" as well as not all non-indigenous are "devils". Were I live there are many huilliche, who refuse to be called mapuche, because they have their own identity, their own traditions, and now people from the Araucanía with government support comes and imposes to them mapuche culture, are we always going to have the mapuche in high esteem thinking they are perfect people while they treat badly other indigenous and non-indigenous persons? They are not worth more just for being part of an ethnic group, that's racism. Mapuche are not perfect, they are humans, and we shouldn't try to justify the terrorist attacks made by CAM adherents, and about giving them some lands back, sadly when land is gave to the community, the president of it owns it, not all members of the community, we should gave them private land for their own if we really want to help them, not communitarian land which at the end is not worked neither is theirs at all! Why should I as a descendant of European immigrants gave my house to someone just for belonging to an ethnic group? Do you support state sponsored racism without knowing doesn't you?

this is the same as in America with minorities. that's your summary of the video. the same is the situation in every country from Canada to Argentina. we just recognize minorities as human well before the us. let's not remember that the Japanese had sex slaves in ww2, in India they still see their own people as u human because they are little less brown.

the land doesn't belong to the natives. Their ancestors lived there 200+ years before, so they claim that the land is theirs? the Chilean's living on the land didn't steal it from natives, maybe 200+ years ago you could claim that, but the owners haven't stolen anything.

Colonialism & genocide is happening all over the world. In Canada it's been happening since the early settlers. To the Anishinabie/First Nations People. The was the 60's Scoop where the government came in and put all the children in foster care. These children we subjected to sexual/physical/mental abuse. Also the Residential School era where RCMP took children away as young as 2 years old. The pain And abused that happened in this era was horrific. The government hiding behind the Catholic Church. The government tried to assimilate all Native people this happens every where. 😡😡😡. We will not be victims no more. This was an awesome storey.

Except that one side doesn't identify as Chilean for obvious reasons. Many Native Americans don't feel like they're an integral part of their countries societies since they're still oppresed, if the different governments were trying to start a reconcilation process & establish some compromises, tensions could be appeased but unfortunately they don't want to (on a side note you could nonetheless, argue that indigenous activism in its current application increases the resentment of the Natives towards the Europeans).

I'm just a know-nothing outsider, but it sounds to be that the Mapuche and the descendants of settlers would both benefit from talking and getting to know each-other despite their differences and possible hatred, form ties, and work together. Then again, nothing is simple, so I can think of many reasons why this might not be a likely solution.
@felipeoyarzun5424
@felipeoyarzun5424 3 года назад
The main one is the Mapuche not ever agreeing on the solutions that are offered to them every time there's a meeting to specifically solve this problem, which was already solved back in Pinochet times, the Mapuche even named him "Ulman Futa Lonco" back in the day
