I would have to say that one of the biggest negatives of owning reptiles and in particular snakes... are people's uneducated opinions about them. Such as ew why do u have a snake it's going to eat you! Or relatives not wanting to visit anymore because you have a snake in your house.

But know he is a little bit convinced by me, but he still hates snakes

I think a downside of reptile keeping is that it is often difficult or impossible to say how your animal feels. Like when a dog is hungry he defently is going to tell you, but with reptiles it's more difficult but on the other hand isn't that the interesting part of the hobby?
@christianhildalgo
@christianhildalgo 7 лет назад
Jey Jey it's actually very easy to tell. At least if you spend hours watching them every single day like I do. When something's up, you'll notice right away, you'll see the behavior changes completely.
@herrruin1415
@herrruin1415 7 лет назад
Yeah thats kinda what I meant. You have to "study" your animals before you can understand and read their behavior. So for a beginner it's hard, but if you know your animal it's easy thats right. So my comparison with the dog was for the view of a beginner. Everyone can see if a dog feels uncomfortable but it's harder to tell for a reptile, at least I think so.
@Colopty
@Colopty 7 лет назад
They have body language like any other animal. And really, body language is different for all animals, you still need to learn it. However you likely have experience with animals like dogs from a very young age, which makes the body language of dogs feel more natural to you, so you don't even consider that reading dogs is a learned skill.

Most people suprisingly don't know how to read their dogs either! I've worked with behaviorists and learned so much. They're just less vocal is the issue, but body language is the language of animals and we're certainly not born fluent. :) I get what you're saying, but keep at studying them, it's quite interesting once you get into it.

How can you be around people like that? I have one friend that I understand why she feels the way she does, we don't choose our phobias and hers is the worst I have EVER heard about let alone experienced. Once someone said my lizard should be fed to his dog and I blew up on him, calling him a deplorable monster that has no empathy for any life other than his own. He reached out to me later apologising and asked if he could come by and meet the lizard. I don't always expect that to be the result but I am a firm believer of "You don't have to want to cuddle them, but you do have to want to save them."

one thing that's negative is when you tell people you want/have a snake and you're fully prepared to have one, and they start pulling the "snakes are dangerous" bs. i mean, i did the research. it's not like i'm going to get a cobra or a rattlesnake straight from wherever you find them. i don't think people realize how much safer it is to own a snake over a dog sometimes. certain dog breeds don't work well if you live with children. snakes are always okay pets if there's children around. if they bite you it's not like you're going to have to go to the hospital.
@astermix95
@astermix95 6 лет назад
Reesau from my experience, i've been injured worse by a dog than my friend getting bit by her snake once. from a bite. depending on the snake, it's not like their fangs are gonna do much but cause you to bleed a little. the only thing you have to worry about is the bite getting infected, but that won't happen unless someone doesn't understand the basics of cleaning a wound and putting a bandaid on. and even then, there have been wounds worse that went untreated other than washing it than a snake bite. sorry for ranting. i'm just angry at people thinking snakes are dangerous when they're really aren't. it's the venomous ones you have to worry about, and even then they'll only bite if you provoke them.
@crystalwaters7989
@crystalwaters7989 6 лет назад
actually, and yes i am a reptile owner myself, not all snake breeds are safe around children. now dont get me wrong, you are right about them being safer than dogs, but on the other hand there are snake types such as baby Jungle Carpet Pythons, younger Blood Pythons, and Rock Pythons. these snakes, while for some would make good pets, would not be for kids. While yes, most snakes are wonderful pets even for young children, others dont make the best. And no, imnot saying that these more agressive breeds are flat out dangerous, im just saying that as a kid, would being constantly bitten by your parents baby snake make a good impression of the species?
@raelonewolf
@raelonewolf 6 лет назад
Good points being made here. Obviously a venomous snake is dangerous, and I will even give critics the point of some non-venomous species being potentially dangerous (such as the Burmese or reticulated pythons), however a pet corn snake, ball python, rosy boa, etc. are not dangerous whatsoever. Also, while I do not advocate people keeping very large snakes as pets, I will say that if I had to choose between being locked in a cage with a 15 ft Burmese python or being locked in a cage with a German Shepherd, I would definitely choose the Burmese python.
@SugarsnapCaely

I know! Whenever I go over to my friends houses, especially if they have large dogs I always get kind-of to really nervous around them. Especially if they start jumping up at me. Snakes on the other hand (as long as they aren't venomous of course) I would be really chill with. Now that doesn't mean I dislike dogs or get nervous around all of them (my best friend has a very rambunctious cocker/springer (I forgot which breed exactly) spaniel and I love her. This is probably because I've had more time to adjust with her though rather than with neighbors or other friends. Hopefully when I get a place of my own I can get a snake. ^^
@CommanderWiggins
@CommanderWiggins 6 лет назад
Most commonly kept snakes aren't going to do any more damage than a cat bite would, usually less. All you're going to need after a bite from a Ball Python or a Corn Snake is a band-aid. The only exception is the Western Hognose, which does have very mild venom, nothing close to life threatening.

I rescued a hatchling red eared slider last year, and he's changed my whole life. I have his tank on my desk and because he gets scared I always move slowly in my room, at this point I do it even when he's not there. When we left on vacation I constantly had nightmares about him dying in horrible ways. I've never cared for anything so much in my life. It's amazing how a reptile that "doesn't show affection like dogs and cats do" can change your life so drastically.

I bought my very first ball python last month and I've noticed that I'm very anxious about how she's feeling and if she's okay. I'm terrified about blood mites because she's my first reptile and I wasn't aware of snake mites before I bought her. Then I found videos about mites and started worrying because the terrarium I bought was used and what if there's mites in it. So far my snake seems clean. I haven't found any mites and the guy who sold me the terrarium said that his snakes never had any mites. It has been almost a month since I bought her and I think I already should have found mites if she has any but she seems clean. But yeah I can totally agree that reptiles can stress you out or give you serious anxiety. I only want the best for my baby. ^^

I'm not sure how it is when you're living with your parents and they allow you to have a pet snake (or otherwise reptile), but for me, being an adult with a family, my grandparents always tell me that I'm endangering my family by having a snake. I'd say that's a downside, but that is also not their choice, so...lol.

Jade Murillo your family would be in a lot more danger with you keeping a large dog in the house than you keeping a snake. More people ( mostly children ) are attacked and killed by dogs every year than any other animal alone. Your family is a lot safer with a snake. 🐍

"Uneducated questions"? Yeah, if they haven't educated themselves on the animal, they are uneducated and it is something positive if they want to learn more about it by asking questions. If people ask me about my pets, their care, etc., I am always willing to educate and share my opinion so that other people get the information they want or need to make informed decisions.

If say one of the negatives for some reptiles is the time commitment. For example, leopard geckos can live 15-20 years. That's a looong time! I have a 2 year old leopard gecko and will hopefully have her for many years to come, but you need to think about if you're ever going to move, or go to college, or live somewhere that doesn't allow them when your older. I think that's a big reason parents sometimes don't want their children to own reptiles because of their age, the parents don't want to get stuck with the animal when their kid goes to college. That's one of the reasons I can't get a ball python

Or you just move to flats where animal keeping is allowed? I never got the "Animals aren't allowed in my new flat, do I have to bring it to the shelter" thing. Then why don't you simply chose a different flat? It's not like there was only one flat available at a town. Or you were forced to move in there. When searching for a new flat (my last one I lived in), I searched for nine months until I found one that allowed the keeping of my two indoor cats. You have to plan in time. And have to look constantly for new flats available, ask there, explain your situation, etc. I think, people who give up their pets because of moving just looked for a poor excuse to get rid of it.

I worry about laws with my boa. They already resricted every other large species common in the pet trade! Very worrisome. If he got out in any northern state he'd be dead within a week anyway. My state doesn't even have any snakes. It's a ridiculous law. When I move for college he'd have to come with me, being only 5 right now and my mother doesn't exactly love him. I mean, she would care for him if she had to, but it's really not fair to do that to her. And he's so curious and social, I couldn't leave him to be locked up all the time even in a large cage.

Poeple do it to any pet that's not a dog or cat(dog owners are espceailly judgemental). Bird:how dare you keep something that flies in a cage. Fish:what's the point they die with in a week and don't do much. Small rodent(especially if it's a mouse(doublely so it's a rat))ew they are nasty,carry disease and will bite you. Spider:ew they are nasty and dangerous. These are just a few examples of the judgements poeple pass on others pets without even owning them or really knowing anything about them.

GREAT video. I can relate to all of these concerns. I have 18 reptiles and 8 amphibians (parrot, 2 cats, 2 dogs, and 2 rats as well) so pretty much a zoo. Most people think that's a lot, which it most certainly is. I do spend about an hour a day on things if not more on "busier" days. With school, work, a house and a girlfriend to tend to things can get a bit chaotic. You honestly have to love it and make sacrifices to be in the hobby, financially and time-wise. You would enjoy some more exotic animals for sure! Might have to wait until you get your own place though...I have a Cuviers caiman and a savannah monitor and that never would have flown when I lived with my parents, understandably lol. I would also say a big negative is the time spent trying to acquire feeders. I've started up breeding projects on Dubias/mice/rats/and feeder lizards because the time and money I was spending on that was not sustainable.

@GoHerping I have been watching so many of your videos lately. I recently got leopard geckos from a friend who did not what them anymore (total of 3). I know generally not more than 2 in a cage but they have grown up together and have not had any issues yet. I diffidently want more reptiles already. The more videos I watch the more I learn that the current enclosure I have needs to be improved.

Lol, not true by a long shot. My Brazilian Rainbow boa has went around a whole month without eating. Ball pythons have been known to fast for about half a year from time to time, and survive perfectly healthy. Depends on the metabolic rate of specific reptiles. and shape the animal is in prior to said fast.

Totally feel ya on that accident emergency thing. Years ago, had a ceramic heat light drop from its holder onto a custom made glass lid. The drop did not crack it, but the heat did! Did not have a backup lid. Was very lucky that my centralian got along with my much bigger ball until I could get them to remake the custom lid. I now have a backup metal screen lid for that tank. Problem is, it does not hold in the heat or humidity as well. A friend has broken the custom glass lid recently, he put it on the ground leaned up against my rabbit cage thinking it would hold it up. It did not. I mean, that is a $200 glass lid that I have already had to pay for twice! I did not see that money. So now my ball python is in her narrow 55gal instead of a much wider floor area 75gal. If she were a younger, more arboreal ball, the 55 would be fine. However, she is a 10lb 5' 27 year old ball who does not want to be in a tank that is only 11 3/4" wide on the inside. So I am trying to refigure how to make that setup work with what I have, but I am still going to have to spend money on heat more heat mats if not the lid. Lesson learned- don't let anyone take out your snakes, even if you know they have snakes and know how to handle them, does not mean they know how to handle the equipment.

Negatives= I’m a hermit. Just hanging out with my pets, not doing anything else. I’m not sure if this is healthy but I like it. Although my moms always sighing when I’m staying at a friends house and I text her this novel of instructions for one freaking night. Also you if you just keep collecting, you’re gonna be getting rid of your bed soon enough to make more room, buying more shelves and racks to keep them all. And of course, changing your own environment for them. I have my room a lot warmer than usual, especially since I’m Canadian, and when my mom comes in she’s practically dying from the heat. You’re gonna have to have a day/night cycle for them, so you can’t stay up all night reading (unless you get a flashlight or something). For some if their room is so bone dry they can’t even keep the humidity up with misting (so my room) they may have to get a room humidifier. If you like to have house parties with booming music and flashy light all night long well you won’t be able to host one yourself anymore. You will inevitably become broke AF because you’re devoting everything to your animals.

Owning any animal is so exhausting but incredibly rewarding. The addiction part hits way too close to home. Three years ago I got two mice and now I've had 7 mice in total (only two are living, they have such short lifespans :( ), a Betta, two rats and a conure. I don't have a reptile because I already have """too many animals""" according to my parents, which frankly I don't think is true ;)

Can definitely confirm the reptile addiction. For the first 10 years of my life I was in a strict no pets family. But I always loved animals especially reptiles, and when we moved and I started really researching and getting obsessed I got a bearded dragon after months of convincing and research. Then we got another Beardie, then another, then a crested Gecko, then another beardie, then my mom rescued a cat all out of the blue (which the kitty is doing really good and is the best floofball ever) Then after we lost our first two beardies (one due to old age and the other being a disabled rescue that never fully recovered). We took in another Beardie, then a Leopard Gecko then another Disabled one a few months later. And All of them are doing great, but it is funny how we went from 1 pet to 8 over the course of 3 years. And 90% of my day is spent caring for my scale babies and I couldn't be happier. :)

Great video! Definitely addictive lol. I think a downside is, at least in my area, is the lack of GOOD pet stores that carry quality supplies for reptiles. If my UV light goes out, for example, I have to wait at least 2 days to receive another one in the mail through Amazon. I do keep extra supplies on hand in case something like this happens, but it's still annoying. It's also impossible for me to find a good variety of feeders locally (insects and rodents). I have to wait for shows to come around or pay a ton of shipping to order through the mail. 😒

Just the general lack of reptile care when it comes to veterinaries, or at least where i'm from, and also how good they are at hiding their problems. I'm not a reptile owner yet but i've read up on articles on pets dying of obesity or even stuck eggs that weren't even noticed until it's death, it just makes me worried if i'm going to be a good dad for them or if i can provide proper care for them in these situations.

A negative I've run into is having to spend more money than anticipated due to a miscalculation or a mistake. For example, having to buy a bigger water bowl or more clutter for your cage. My recent investment was into a lamp to heat my cage to maintain a better ambient temperature, as the temperature of my house is dropping more with winter. The person advising me told me to go 75 watt, but I probably should've gotten a 50 watt as the 75 watt raised my temperature a little too much, so now I either have to figure out a way to hang the lamp or buy another 50 watt, both options that'll cost me more money.

Silver Suchomimus Your corn snakes shouldn't be going that long without you being there. Food wise they would probably would be fine if fed beforehand. However they would need water changes and temp regulations if it is past 2 weeks. You can bring the snake there if you are staying at a place for those 2+weeks (he has a video on that). And as far as mice a small cooler or bag with ice packs should be fine to keep them in till you get to your destination.
