Driving deaths sadly were common in early rock/pop songs. "Dead Man's Curve" by Jan and Dean(1964), "Tell Laura I Love Her" by Ray Peterson(1960), and "Teen Angel" by Mark Dinning(1959) just to name a few. Even the Beatles mention a man who "blew his mind out in a car" in A Day In The Life.

Guys, he crashed and died. Shangri-la is pronounced Shangra-la. It is from a classic 1937 movie (and 1933 book) called Lost Horizon and it means a perfect wonderful place, kind of like Nirvana. The video clip is from "The Wild Ones". Too bad you did not see the group singing (with their beehive hair-dos). So glad you are starting to look at girl groups. They do have other hits like "Walking in the Sand". Just for fun, you should hear The Angels sing "My Boyfriend's Back". But you really have to hear The Shirelles', and Martha and the Vandellas, Their hits are real rock and roll classics.

This is a classic of girl group pop and also "death rock." It's the frequent girl group theme of the bad boy that the parents can't stand but the girl loves him...but then he dies in a crash. Other death rock classics might be "Teen Angel" and "Tell Laura I love her." The Shangri-La's producer was a guy called Shadow Morton who dreamed up these little tragedies. In "You Can Never Go Home Anymore" the parents won't let the boy in the house. Also, I've read they brought a motorcycle into the studio to record it....or maybe they just ran a microphone outside to it. Either way it isn't stock.

Shangri La was a fictional village from the classic novel Lost Horizon. The book was turned into 2 different movies. The original came out in the 1930's, but it was the 1970's musical that had a huge impact on me as a kid. That was my favorite movie for many years. Basically, everyone in Shangri La would always stay young and beautiful. However, if they ever left Shangri La, then they would quickly age. Also, without giving too much away, a man's plane crashed in the city and he falls in love with one of the locals.

We dressed up my little brother in a leather jacket and put him on his tricycle and then we hit him with our Barbie Van to reinact the crash scene. We didn't have cell phones and video games so that's how we entertained our parents. A world away from now.

The Shangri-Las, lead vocalist Mary Weiss, and twins Marge and Maryanne Ganser were a unique group and so were the songs they recorded!! I don't usually comment but I'll make an exception for the Shangri-Las. They were the "bad girl" girl group of the 60's and they were one of the influences of the early punk scene. Both Blondie and The Go-Gos covered their songs among others. You should check out the videos of them doing "Remember (Walking in the Sand)" and "Out in the Streets". I think Amber, particularly would like "I Can Never Go Home Anymore". They were two sets of sisters. Mary and Betty Weiss and Marge and Mary Ann Ganser (who were twins). I don't think Betty cared much for singing before an audience so they often performed as a trio with Mary taking lead and the Ganser twins singing back up. They are definitely worth exploring futher.

Oh, this song was HUGE in 1964, right before The Beatles and the British Invasion. The Shangri-Las were a pair of sisters from (I believe Passaic, New Jersey). They had other hits too like "(Remember) Walking In the Sand". Girl groups were known for being kind of rebellious. Give "He's A Rebel" by The Crystals or "My Boyfriend's Back" by The Chiffons. Girl groups like The Supremes and The Ronettes were all the rage back then.

The only drawback was that we only had one record. It reminds me of this song but it was called (It’s My Party) by Leslie Gore. Very reminiscent sound to the Shanghai-Las. Teenage Tragedy genre. The Shangs were 2 pairs of sisters from Queens, New York. The lead was Mary Weiss (15 when this was recorded), twins Marge and Mary Ann Genser (16) and Betty Weiss (17). They got cheated out of royalties like so many others and weren't allowed to perform due to litigation. If want to see them perform, look for "Give Him A Great Big Kiss" and "Right Now And Not Later" on a show called Shindig. It's live singing with a studio band.
