What if drawing was as easy as writing? What if there was an alphabet of drawing? Well, there is! Drawing inspiration from Mona Brooks' book "Drawing with Children," I'll explain how just five types of shapes can compose any drawing. I'll demonstrate by drawing several things, from a chicken to a photo of my pug. The tutorial is not just about techniques but also about developing a new way of seeing and translating the world into art. It's designed for learners of all levels, focusing on the joy and simplicity of drawing. And it's fun!

I am so happy - I made it with your help:-)))). If I had had such help at school I would have never said 'I cannot draw':-))). I was always so sad that I am not creative:-). Now - with your help - at 71 this is changing. Thank you a thousand times. It is never too late to start something new:-)))

More than anything else, your channel has given me the confidence to actually just enjoy drawing. Learning from most other sources online had me doing figure drawing and gesture drawing and realistic portraits and then trying to simplify it while still thinking about line quality and shape design and it was all just too much and taking the joy out of drawing and making me feel like I can't draw yet. I felt like maybe if I do a lot of practice of fundamentals, I'll one day be able to draw. But seeing your drawings is so refreshing. This style is so honest and endearing and it's all about the pure joy of drawing. So thank you!

Thank you, Danny, for showing me a new way to see my subject matter. I found your channel quite by accident and so glad I did. I am at a place where I am ready to try drawing again after a long dry spell of about 20 years (I learned weaving and quilting in the interim but want something more portable). Your lessons are so much clearer and way more fun than any art classes I attended years ago. I now carry a sketchbook with me everywhere and hopefully will practice enough to see some improvement soon. Again, thank you for making art accessible and fun for me again!

I took up watercolor 2 yrs. ago. The plan is to give up in July, my 78th birthday. Your sketchbook was such an encouragement. Or as we said back in the day, "It was a scream." I just bought 2 little 4" x 4" sketchbooks---impulse, & wondering what to do with them. Now I know. Thanks a million!

I just want to thank you for these lessons. It really helps the right side of my brain and I think it's a really fun way to draw. I prefer it to some of the more technical talk I have studied before.

Thanks so much Danny! I love your videos. They’re really helping me become the artist I want to be. In the future, I’d love to see one on suggested warm ups when sitting down to draw. Like a pianist practicing scales or an athlete stretching, I’d like to take the first 5-10 minutes to get centered and warm up, but I’m not sure how to start. Thank you again for such great content. I hope you have an awesome day!

A great teacher simplifies a complex task to make it achievable. Despite some drawing study in art college, this is helping my perception of what I'm doing. I can't wait to watch all the videos in this series. You are awesome

Oh my goodness. As I was watching the lines etc being drawn I was thinking 'looks really bad - like a 2 year old would draw'...... and right before the 'reveal' of removing the underlying image I really was expecting to laugh my head off! How totally wrong was I!! Yes, it's basic - it was never meant to be anything more complex, BUT - to my amazement and great pleasure - it really does (the 'set of lines, curves etc drawn so easily by you) capture the 'look' or 'essence' of your little dog - yes, it really does have the look and character (I'm not saying characteristics, I mean the recognisable character of YOUR dog, as seen in the photo) of your little pug - very impressive and inspiring demonstration for a totally hopeless 'artist' like me - I'm useless at drawing. The more of your videos I watch the more I'm improving even upon my pathetic abilities to see and record (i.e. draw) things around me. I really appreciate you taking the time and putting in the effort to put these videos onto YT for us all! Excellent video! 😀👍👍 EDIT - ADDED, The context of my comments above is that I'm a novice machine-embroidery-design creator (the 'designs' are constructed with software that converts the objects, lines, shapes etc that I 'draw' with the software, into 'stitch files' that an embroidery machine can execute to stitch-out an embroidery design, for example an embroidered patch with a Pug's face on it!). I struggle with the artistic side of this - i.e. the turning of an image - maybe a photo, line drawing etc into a design as I'm so poor at actually drawing. BUT - the principles you demonstrate here such as 'seeing' what's in front of you as a collection/construction of the basic identified parts - the lines, curves, shapes (filled) that you call 'dots', before drawing is EXACTLY the process/approach used when building an embroidery design, as all of these fundamental 'pieces' are exactly what are created/defined within the embroidery design construction software! Not only am I learning to see what I'm looking at in a way that simplifies and improves my drawing, as poor as it is, but it's entirely relevant to my design-work as a pathetically-untalented artist! Thanks again!
