This video covers the best settings, in my opinion , for the Yi 4K Action Camera. The Xiaomi Yi 4K Action Camera has become my daily use camera. It is my dash cam and my general use action camera. I still love my GoPro Hero 5 and Hero 6, but this Yi 4K has captured a place in my equipment list. This is a great camera for motorcycle riding and for helmet footage.

I talk about two different levels of settings, one for daily use (no editing) and one for high quality flat footage that I will white balance, color grade, and sharpen in post editing. I will give a short description of each below:

Thank you for the video. I have a problem with my cam. Pictures come out perfect but videos are always wayyyyy to bright unless they are filmed in a thick shade. No matter what setting I chose. What do you suggest? Thanks

Good Report! I have a NeonTek 4K ULTRA HD cam. The Video picture is fine, however I get Static Buzzing noise for the first 10 or 15 seconds of video recording. Then it quiets down with normal sound. How can I get rid of it..? Any ideas? Thanks, Michael.

Thats because he has not yet done his post production on it. The reason he has it dark and on flat color is so that his color balance is not very wide, this soaks in a great amount more detail then any other setting. Afterwards, with a post production tool hes going to raise the highlights and midtones of the video up manually, and i guarantee you it will come out looking brighter and clearer then the first clip he showed. This way he leaves himself a ton of room on the color scale to give the video the exact look he desires. "The Loam Ranger" has a couple really good videos on this process, i definitely recommend them, interesting watch.

Great camera that takes great video. I used to set it at 1080/60 BUT unless you have a high powered PC, you will not be able to view it and I have an old i7 gaming PC and it is like playing a 1920's movie. Just be realistic on how you set the camera up defending on usage that works for you.

Hello again, update on my new Yi 4K Plus with the jitters. For some reason I did not have the option of 60 FPS. It would only give me the the choice of x2 or x4 in frame rate. I did a direct connect of the camera to the computer with the USB jack. Ran the video in the player on a PC. Bad jitters really bad. Unplugged the camera. Went to settings in the camera and all of a sudden I had a whole slew of options of 30 and 60 FPS. Ran more sample vid in 60 fps in stabilization mode in 1080p plugged the camera back into the laptop and beautiful, no jitters on any of the sample vid's in slow-mo or regular speed. Thanks for the heads up on the settings. I was ready to return it. AWESOME CAMERA NOW WITH YOUR HELPFUL VIDEO. I JUST SUBSCRIBED. P.S. I need you to do a video on Adobe Premiere review as me and my wife are just getting started on our travel channel on RU-vid. Still looking for a video editing software. Thank you so much for this video.

That's great to hear that you were able to get things working. One of the first things to always check is the firmware, usually when you get your camera, it will be 1 or 2 version behind. Updating this will always fix a lot of problems as well as providing you with new features. I will definitely try to do an adobe premiere review, it has been super busy at work, so I have not had much time to do any videos.

I just got 2 yi-4k's and did a test video. It recorded my video wayyyyy too fast. On playback in the camera, it's like 1.5 - 2x speed. I thought it was my video editor on my computer at first (Screenflow 7), but nope... It's the camera. Any tips to fix this?

I don't think I've ever had mine do that unless I dropped it onto a timeline that was set to a higher speed than I shot my film at. Have you tried just playing the file in something like quicktime or VLC to see if it is still sped up?

SanDisk extreme pro micro SD card. 32. Or 64 GB. Yi recommends you do not stray from this brand or it might not function correctly.

This cam have dashcam setting inside , Auto On or Off with vehicle start and off?

It does have a loop feature, but unfortunately no Auto on or Off. Yi does make an actual dashcam that has this feature, but the Yi 4K does not. It functions well as a dashcam which has been my primary usage, but it is a little annoying having to remember to turn it on.

Actually I don't want loop options I want to record journeys, for this purpose I need to install cam inside car for this SJ7 or sj8 or Yi+ which is better? because SJcam offers CAR Mode

Hi I have the same camera every time I try to film it in 4k then post it on RU-vid it comes all pixelated and then Max I can see it and is I believe 480 even when I do it in 1080p it's still very pixelated on RU-vid what am I doing wrong thanks

RU-vid heavily compresses your video when you upload and a lot will depend on the program you are using and the export settings. I use Adobe Premiere for mine and I will be doing a tutorial video on this in the near future. I use a custom export preset setting that, if I am doing 4K, has the following: ➡️Format is H.264 ➡️Under the Video Tab, Basic Video Settings, width 3840, height 2160, frame rate should match what your video is, Aspect is Square Pixels (1.0), Profile is High, Level is 5.2, Render at Maximum Depth is checked. ➡️Under BitRate settings I use CBR and a target of 100MBS, this is ridiculously high, but it ensures that, when I am running high action sequences, there is always enough bitrate even if youtube compresses the heck out of it. Word of caution here though, the file size will be huge so you will have to factor that in both in file size and upload time. ➡️You will also need to check the Use Maximum Render Quality. I know this all kind of runs together in this comment, but those are the video settings I use. For 1080p the width and height are different (1920x1080) and the target bitrate is 40mbps. I will go into more detail when I film the tutorial and will show these settings on screen. One final note, give RU-vid time after you do your initial upload. On large files, especially 4K, it can take a little bit of time for the various versions to be encoded and available on the site. They will always start with a 360p version which really looks bad. I hope this at least points you in the right direction. Good luck on the camera.

Metering measures the brightness of the subject to set your exposure, shutter speed, and other settings. I.E. the Yi4K has two metering modes, spot and centered. If it was in Spot mode, it would determine exposure off the brightness levels in one spot in the image as opposed to the whole frame.

muhd azroy I have the same problem, it happens when the cam frame skips forward and the sound hasn’t skipped, so it delays. No idea how to fix yet :(

muhd azroy I solved it by changing the WiFi on the camera to 5g instead of 2.5 when I import videos, it makes them run smoother with no lag

I am recording in 1080p and editing in resolve 17. when I watch on youtube the quality is very bad. I am compressing the video to reduce the size of the file in Handbrake compressing software. can suggest me any ideas?

I would not compress in handbrake at all, I would upload to youtube in full 1080p quality. RU-vid will compress it again so sometimes you are better off to upscale to 4k then let RU-vid do it's compression. Keep your bit rate as high as you can.

Why you use flat color mode?

Flat color mode gives you more color editing control in programs such as premiere. When you use the Yi color profile, it has preselected the color scheme for you. When editing videos with the Yi color profile already applied, you may have trouble getting the color quality to the level you want, especially if you are trying to match up to footage from another camera such as a gopro.

Stabilization should only be used in bright light otherwise it will appear like something is vibrating the camera it will be so bad. In bright light the EIS really shines. Most cameras with EIS will have shakey video when not in ideal lighting. I never turn mine on unless bright sunshine or at least bright skies. Also using 60fps helps unsteady video without EIS. EIS helps a bunch with 30fps but again, in good lighting.

took YI 4k+ for 2 day horse trip. My goal was to take some footage of horse canter @ 720p / 240fps and play with Slo-mo in post editing. Came back disappointed AF. The video quality of that mode is comparable with jpegs that had 99% compression enabled......... Constantly moving camera on the helmet makes things worse obviously. Guess gonna stick to 4k 60/30 next time unless I am shit at setting this camera up :((

Before making any adjustments to this camera it should firstly be set to the NTSC or PAL standard. Most of the world uses PAL, with a frame rate of 50fps. This is important if you want to mix your video with that taken from standard video cameras and when videoing under fluorescent lightning. Perhaps you have assumed that your video will only be watched in North America.
