During the battle of khandak, it was ramzan, and there are many credible hadiths on how the the sahabas used to work throughout the day, even with stones wrapped around thier belly so they wont feel the hunger. and it is also reported that when they broke fast it was usually with just a date and some water.

When muslims just don't eat in the day and then stuff their bellies in the privacy of their homes at night, thus not reducing caloric intake at all, it's not fasting - it's just waiting to eat. Fasting gives rest to Body: During fasting Muslims abstain from food, drink, etc. from dawn to dusk. While fasting many organs of the body get rest which is important for their good health. 7.
