Street Fighter 6 is one of the most important fighting games ever. Its approach to accessibility is remarkable to the point where someone whose memory disorder locked them out of an entire genre has become an obsessive player. It's that significant.
Also it's making elitist gatekeepers cry, and it features Best Gladiator Girl Marisa. I love it!

Ryu may believe in the importance of communicating with one's fists, but I'm glad he's empathetic enough to realize that's not a philosophy that can be carried into a romantic relationship.

Might be a nice detail to add in the irl version if you havent already ! Love the show thank goodness for you

This resonates with me so much. In my own words, with exception of real Boot Camp for the millitary, I think the "I will break you" training is more about the teacher's limitations on how they teach, not the student's ability to learn, thus they "filter out" recruits they can't be bothered with. (millitary boot camp does this with VERY specific goals in mind such as being able to make sense of input in a battlefield and conditioning to reflexively take orders, and making sure people that genuinely can't make good soldiers don't get KILLED). I have many friends that have had art teachers that took on the attitude of "my way is the only right way, pass/fail critiques" and so on, and they genuinely are sad that they are just not good artists. After I hosted just 2 or 3 craft days as a break from DnD, these same people make leaps and bounds of progress with my teaching style showing them grace, patience, and offering techniques an a way that resonates with them. If a teacher's goal is to, well, TEACH, then it is on the teacher to adapt to the situation. If a game's goal is to teach people how to play it, then that game should adapt its techniques to do so. I so badly want to be good at the Total War: Warhammer games as I've been a fan of the tabletop game since the late 90's, but I have so many other things I have to do in life that I don't want to watch hours of how-to videos just to get the basics. If the game had a slow-ramping tutorial I would probably fall in love with it. As is, it's just sitting in my Steam list with a Round-Toit stamp.

This video genuinely brought a tear to my eye. As a developer who's constantly pushing for better accessibility, _this_ is exactly why. This is what makes it all worth it. The sheer joyous enthusiasm and _empowerment_ of being able to do something you were previously unable to do is what every accessibility-minded person in tech should strive for. I know no one involved in making SF6, but I'm proud of them for opening the gates to a whole new demographic of players. Thank god for them. I do wish they'd get rid of the bloody microtransactions though. One step at a time, eh?

Maybe it's best to just not seek or apply categories to people and let them exist, and do what makes them happy. Neither "hardcore" nor "casual", nor anything to be used as a derogatory term by the next person. Whether someone plays games all day and every day to the exclusion of anything else, it doesn't harm you, nor is it a moral failure. Let's encourage accessibility for all, diversity for all, and unlimited possibilities.

I know, right? It just goes to show how brainwashed by capitalism these people are. They get told all their lives that everything they do has to be a competition to see who can be of the most value that when they do something purely for their own enjoyment, they're so stuck in the mindset that things are only of value if they don't enjoy them that they actively ruin their own enjoyment.

@pyroprince90
@pyroprince90 Год назад
I really liked the line "It's about how best to use the moves, rather than pulling the moves off themselves." That resonated for me. I never had the same degree of issues with fighting games that you have, but I was never great at them myself. But if you're not the player, and we know that fighting games are as much a spectator's sport as a player's one, watching the moves occur and seeing the "strategy" is all you actually get. You're not, on the outside, conscious of the effort it takes to make the moves happen. You are TOLD that its difficult to do what they are doing, but that's all. On screen however all you end up getting is what you said, the moves themselves being shown in an optimal way. To that degree, if the splash screens don't tell the opponent youre using simple controls(idk if they do I dont plan on buying this) there's no way for them to know if they lost "because" of that or not. Meanwhile, now a whole other group of people now gets to jump in on the fun. If hardcore fighting gamers want to continue to exist the guilty gears, tekkens, blazblues, and older SF titles aren't going anywhere. Evo isn't going to die because of this.
@Beremor
@Beremor Год назад
The tournament level players are probably never going to use modern controls anyway because they spend so much time practicing they can pull off even fancier and more optimal combos just as reliably as modern controls. So even if you're a hardcore player, Street Fighter 6 has you covered.

Hell, for us hardcore players I actually see a lot of them talking about how high the skill ceiling is for this game. It certainly feels more fun and rewarding to play than SF5, and THAT game dragged its arse about the competitive scene like a bad smell for years. SF6 is going to do gangbusters.
@sacta

But Blazblue already had a system like this. On character select you can choose between the 'technical' and 'easy' controls. So no, this won't ruin fighting games because the first time I saw this option was DECADES ago on the original Marvel vs Capcom for the Dreamcast. And even that might not have been the earliest use of it.

Haven't cared about streetfighter in a long, long time, but I think this is a fantastic demonstration of game design. Take something iconic that most people would love to love, and give them a way to enjoy it regardless of their skill level or skill set. From what I'm hearing it takes nothing away from the geniuses who have mastered all the nuances of the 'classic' moveset, but gives those who aren't able to grok it an alternate path to enjoy the game. Everyone gets to have their fun. Perfection!

I‘m reminded of the handling of maths in school. A friend of mine has dyscalculia, and she knows she‘s good at maths, her brain is just built against processing numbers in her head, but as the jokes complain about, past 9th grade, maths is less and less about just numbers and the numbers were only ever there to teach the actual principles of math more comprehensively to begin with. My friend was always told that she‘s bad at maths, and that she shouldn‘t complain because she‘s ~a girl anyway~. She asked to be allowed to use a calculator but got denied because accessibility gets seen as unfairness not just in gaming culture but also in school. But once calculators were allowed for everyone, she jumped from Ds to straight As. She‘s a professional programmer now. Just by using a calculator. If you can code, you know a calculator isn‘t what makes you able to do that.

As someone heavily invested into fighting games of all sorts there is nothing wrong at all about more people being involved with them. Glad you mentioned Divekick, it's not exactly a favourite game of mine but it does a great job of stripping the complex inputs out of a fighting game and leaving timing and prediction as central principles. I've never cared about fighting games to try to understand frame data and all of that stuff but I've got a lot of enjoyment out of Virtual Fighter and Soul Calibur and I do find I spend more time trying to pull off the moves than I do trying to work out which moves are safe to use in what situations. Simplifying a fighting game's controls to concentrate on tactics and positioning is like playing RTS games that throw out having to balance five different resources in favour of emphasising unit counters and army composition in my opinion.

I remember getting really into Fighterz. Absolutely loved it. Got into online fighting and rising the ranks. It was great. The thing that got me to stop playing? The long winded combos. Whether I was the one doing them or the one getting hit by them, they were just so tedious. No tactics (once you were in one), no real skill. It was like the game suddenly became a boring version of a rhythm game, and you just had to wait it out. Nothing worse than a Gohan midscreen regular combo that took forever to knock you in the air and bounce you around the screen, completely stunlocked for a good ten seconds. I tried to make the game about the initial blows. The normals. Keeping combos short so it could be more about the tactics, but on the higher rankings people would just need one or two successful startups, and that would be the game, just watching me bounce around the arena for ten seconds. And they would do so without hesitation. A 100 hit combo used to sound so cool, but secretly they were the most deary part of any fighting game.

There's one thing you all need to understand about fighting games, and Capcom fighting games in particular: Progress always goes forward, never back. Remember the very first Street Fighter? If you knew the baww-fiyah "secret technique" and your opponent didn't, you could laugh your way to victory. That fireball was so broken it was sand. It got to the point where players *limited the number of fireballs per round completely of their own volition* just to keep things remotely interesting. Never happened again. Remember the first Street Fighter 2? Where if you learned all of Guile's combos, chains, and dirty tricks (and selected him before someone else beat you to the punch), you completely owned, oh, conservative estimate, 97% of the planet? (I heard that a really good Dhalsim player could best Guile, but in my experience "really good Dhalsim player" was almost an oxymoron.) Never happened again. Remember Alpha Counter-fests in Street Fighter Alpha 2? No longer. Every time Capcom sees an unfair advantage, they either blunt or remove it. So to everyone who has a problem with modern controls, here are your options: deal or walk. Your precious victory-by-muscle-memory just got sent to the dustbin of history along with the baww-fiyahs and blockstun throws and never-miss pile drivers, never to return. The party is well and truly *over.* There are going to be a lot more players who can learn the game and kick _your_ butt, and no about of screaming and bellyaching is going to change that. It's Capcom, baby.

I think what you have happen with fighting games is people who are intermediate-level hear really high level people discuss things like tier lists and execution and combos and confuse that for something that applies to them, so when someone says you're not really playing a fighting game, what they really mean is that you're just playing at a very rudimentary level compared to people with literally tens of thousands of hours of experience over many decades, but they phrase it in such a way that sounds off. Like, I get someone saying you're not really playing the game if you can't even remember how to do a move input because actually playing the game involves way more memorization than that, in a whole lot of different ways, ones besides inputs, but that doesn't really apply just to people who play with the easy controls. It applies to like 95% of the playerbase. To properly play at a competitive level you have to memorize the properties (speed, recovery, range, whether it's a hit or a grab, whether it hits low or mid or overhead) of every single move of every single char, and each char has like 30-40 of them, so that's around 500~ moves give or take. Some are more relevant than others so you will obviously prioritize things like that one grab gief does that takes off half your life bar, but eventually you wanna be at a place where you're never surprised or caught off guard because you didn't know what a move did. And as you do all that, you then start to innovate specific move interactions that are unique to your character, so you can adapt against the other chars. All this stuff obviously is a lot more memorization-heavy than just remembering that you have to hit down then diagonal down, then forward, instead of just hitting forward.

But after it changed its monetisation to be confusing and bad, it lost a lot of goodwill, so I dunno if anyone's even playing it any more. But the game itself is very good and very accessible.

The moment they said in pre release stuff, that they would introduce a modern, simpler control scheme, I was really thinking about getting a classic 1v1 fighting game. I tried some before, some old Street Fighters, some Tatsunoku vs Capcom but they always had a 12m high difficulty wall. I couldn't get into them, no matter what and I don't have ADHD or other conditions as you Steph. The controls were just unnatural for me, compared to movement in other games. Heck even compared to Smash (which is easier to pick up and besided the strong IPs, that is maybe the reason why it sells so much better than most other fighting games). I don't wanna invest a games lenght into learning basic controls, before having fun. And as someone who watches FGC tournament (mostly Smash), it is sadly common how elitist so many act there. The stuff I read around the time EVO came up and how these classic fgc no-names tried to dunk on Smash, for their control scheme, for having different stage layouts, for having the OPTION to have items was and still is disgusting. So yeah, kudos to Capcom for focusing not on bringing out a rushed game for eSports, like SF5 but thinking about the genre from ground up and how to attract newcomers. Every other game should take notice, like they did with their netcode over the last few years.

I dived into SFV late last year after struggling to get into it and consigning myself to just enjoying tournaments it was though but set me up to enjoy SF6 a lot more. I wish Steph had said more about battle hub, It's the kooky sometimes wholesome social space that fighting games have been screaming out for with its crazy character creator and community that's embracing the meme potential. The characters getting separate ranks online allows me to try characters at their own pace where I felt punished if I tried anything new in SFV. I'm sitting in the gold ranks with Lily and Juri (Lily is an adorable little munchkin and main motivation to keep grinding the game) on the other hand I'm kinda crap with Cammy and Ken. I haven't put the time in but I can hop on at lower ranks and play them in a more relaxed setting when I want a change of pace. I love fighting games but this one feels like it's trying to give me the kind of experience I truly want. All I need now is Sakura and Akira in the game plz Capcom.

Honestly this isn’t even the first traditional fighter in implement this control scheme fantasy strike has it as well and is pretty alright I’m not amazing at it but it’s certainly interesting Hell there’s 3 defensive options with very simple reactions, a opposite direction block, a do nothing grab counter and a jump super grab counter all while the attacks are based off single directional inputs and a 1,2 button press requiring very little memorisation (so much so I think ghost if Tsushima had a harder test with the Bamboo)

As an "old-head" of the fighting/shooting game community, I have no issues with the accessibility gameplay options. They've been implemented in other games before(like P4 Arena). So this has been a gripe amongst the hardcore for a bit. Plus that's always been an issue with fighting games survival as a whole. If only hardcore fans/gamers can play it, then sometimes there isn't enough money to keep releasing. Diversifying the player base helps solve that. (Dead or Alive had that issue...but for uhh...some additional reasons) Even though I'm no where close to my prime anymore👴🏿. I can still handle any casual player, just off game sense/experience/aptitude. Easy inputs doesn't teach that. It comes with time. But having a shallow end of the pool to start off in, eventually makes the deep side feel less daunting. My stance now is the same as back then. If you consider yourself competitive and/or pro gamer. And you get bodied by someone with assist mode. You just ain't good enough, get back to the lab.

This video is beautiful. I’ve been playing fighting games for damn near 25 years now and Steph is right on the goddam money. I’ve heard a dozen times at this point people complaining about controls being dumbed down and “now anyone can play.” I saw it on some wii version of MK9 where you could do special moves with a waggle. I saw complaints when MvC3 was coming out and the buttons were light, medium, heavy, launcher instead of 1 and 2’s layout. The bottom line is if the only thing separating you from a newbie was your button execution, then that’s on you. If the only reason you’re better than a toddler at driving a car is because they can’t reach the pedals and see over the steering wheel, then you’re a shitty driver. It was really nice to see a mostly positive video. It’s good to see some happiness in the Jimquisition.

absolutely agree. There's more to being good at fighting games than technical skill, anybody who doesn't acknowledge that is bad at them. I'm actually fairly good at the whole button memorization and input, I'm still average at best in most fighting games other than Tekken. But that's because I've been playing Tekken pretty consistently for over 20 years. I'm just not great at doing hard reads, I drop combos under pressure, I'm bad at understanding different match ups, i form bad playing habits that are easily punished. In short: even if i did switch to modern controls, I would still routinely get dunked on by higher tier players.

Better that than us competitors ruling from atop a tiny mountain. Besides, the drive that took us this high in Tekken isn't going to go away just because we stripped out some hurdles for others.
