Today we conclude our coverage of the 1989 World Championships in Stuttgart (for now) with a recap of the very intriguing Balance Beam Final. To quote soothsayer, commentator, and camp legend Monica Phelps: "I think I would go as far as to say that this beam Final will be the best ever contested beam Championships that the world has ever seen."
But was Monica right? The field was certainly packed. It included Hungary's Henrietta Onodi making her senior World debut, the recent co-European champions Gabriela Potorac from Romania and Olesya Dudnik from the Soviet Union. We had the reigning balance beam champion from the 1988 Seoul Olympics, Romanian Daniela Silivas. And of course, there were two extremely talented Chinese competitors in Yang Bo and Chen Cuiting. The potential was certainly there.
Please tune in to find out what happened and why many feel it was such a heart-breaking result.
Thank you so much to ‪@Boban1611‬ for uploading the routine videos I used to create this recap.

Take a shot every time I say "amplitude". You'll be under the table by the end of the video. I also have to say that had the Greek judge scored Chen anything lower than a 9.85 it wouldn't have affected Chen's final score. (Very 1988 Nelli Kim.) So it was by no means a guarantee, but it does show you how much influence one judge can have. It's also surprising that her scores were allowed to range from 9.50 to 9.90--that's a four tenth margin. Not sure if that is still allowed.. And a correction, 5:01 I am crazy and imagined that Silivaș competed Moceanu's mount instead of her own. So Daniela did in fact compete her full eponymous mount here.

The permitted variance in judges' scores were set as: - Scores between 9.500 and 10.000 -> 0.10 variance - Scores between 9.000 and 9.475 -> 0.20 variance - All other scores -> 0.30 variance Note that: 1. The permitted variance is in reference to the average of the four counting scores. Thus, even though the Greek judge is technically out of range, it doesn't matter because her score was one of the two that were thrown out. 2. The permitted variances listed above also needed to be maintained between the C / Chief judge scores and the average of the 4 counting judges' scores.

You are on the money with your critique and Yang Bo damn sure should have been the winner, and Cheng got robbed and why?? Who tf were they scoring!! I still would have given the win to Yang Bo bc the others didn't do their routines as good as she did, period.
@thesovgc

@@gymdecoderThis is INSANITY. Even if a judge's score is thrown out, it affects the values of the ones that are counted. Maybe she missed something or needed coaching to get in line. So Chen doesn't get robbed. It's obvious the Chinese didn't have the influence to get her to change her score the way the Americans did with the Brazilian judge on Brandy Johnson's vault. SMH.

I've seen video footage of this final in five different languages, and in all five of them, the commentators scream after Yang Bo's dismount. It was that kind of performance. Complete and utter perfection... right until the dismount. I totally respect the West German judge for giving the routine a 9.95 despite the botched landing. If ever a routine deserved an ROV bonus, this was it. (And yes, I'm aware the ROV bonus was abolished before this competition.)

Yang Bo's dismount was absolutely devastating. Everything else was perfection, and that Rulfova was out of this world. I adore Silivas, but she seemed tired and over it at this meet. Understandable after the AA, and what happened to her knee during FX final warm ups. I have to say, I agree with your analysis. Thank you so much for deep diving into this competition! It's iconic

As someone who speaks Portuguese and Romanian I appreciate your pronunciation of Daniela Siliivas’s name. Few people know that Romanian is the fifth and often forgotten romantic language and it’s very close to Portuguese. Most people in Portugal 🇵🇹 Brasil 🇧🇷 e Romania 🇷🇴 do not double L like Italians. The number 7 is very powerful culturally that’s why Daniela and Lavinia etc. As your token professional ballerina I love when you use ballet 🩰 terms such as sissonne, which when landed on one foot would be called sissonne ouvert and when landed on both feet closed would be sissonne fermé. I was surprised that Henrietta who’s clearly very flexible couldn’t get the amplitude required. She can clearly do over splits just by looking at her beautiful scale! I’ve never seen this video before and I’m loving it! Спасибо, что сохранили золотой век гимнастики. Такое ощущение, будто я снова в Москве или Бухаресте... Браво 👏🏻🩰 13:29

I think you got this one right. Chen Cuitang's routine was much better than Potorac's. I remember that judges back then didn't really deduct for lack of amplitude or cowboying legs on dismounts. So unfortunately gymnasts who showed beautiful form and amplitude didn't get rewarded. It was all about landings, and Chen got docked for that back straddle down. I think the sport has made some positive changes in that area.
@thesovgc
@thesovgc 8 месяцев назад
The interesting thing is that there was a deduction for excessive cowboy in the COP. And ofc there was a Special requirement to show a leap or jump with great amplitude. The problem is that these are written subjectively, likely purposefully. It really allowed each judge to score to her preferences (or commands, if you want to be overly cynical). That's why I was pleasantly surprised to see how many judges did agree with me when it came to evaluating Chen and how close she came to medaling. That damn Greek judge RUINED MY LIFE. (Monica has an especially funny comment when Chen's scores are getting ready to come up that I hope to include in a future video 😂.)

You were quite generous with the scores... 😉 I have to admit - I wanted Olessia Dudnik to win the Gold Medal, but I knew after her dismount, that this was not possible anymore. Her score was way too high for my taste, because her step forward was so severe. Yang Bo was my next top favorite gymnast at this event and her routine was so flawless. I almost saw her sticking her dismount and then this happened. Again the score was way too high, for a mistake like that, since she stumbled her way 'back' to the middle of the apparatus. It is sad, that Olessia Dudnik never continued with her career and Yang Bo tried her best, but was out of luck most of the time during the big competitions. Both were so elegant gymnasts.... brilliant performers! *sighs deeply*

That's absolutely what they did. I talked about score mitigation in my video re-judging the 89 AA. I just think they went too far. Especially when you should be taking into consideration she's low-key missing a Special Requirement for not performing a leap or jump with great amplitude.

One of the rarest occasions that we might have to agree with Monica Phelps. Possibly one of the best BB EF of all times. The scores however… the criteria applied would vary according to the mood of the judge. The 9.5 to Chen followed by the 9.9.5 to Dudnyk from the Greek judge was ridiculous

@@KaiOpaka That seems quite likely. Judges have punched in the wrong scores by accident numerous times in different sports. It happened with the Brazilian judge with Frechette in 92, and this judge came forward right away. It happened in Conway's short program at the 92 Olympics, with the Duchensays with one judge at the 88 Europeans, and numeorus other times. Sometimes the judge will try and admit they made a mistake right away but usually are too embarassed and will say nothing until after the event, if at all.

Been engaging with your content a lot lately, and here for it. It strikes me as a lot of the things that make Yang Bo supreme on beam call out what Boginskaya isn’t, yet emphasize a different greatness in Bogi. Yang springs with lightness off the beam-she constantly soars as if on puffs of air, which allows for the extraordinary line and finish. Bogi’s body type was not so airy and she never springs off the apparatus. Still, her school demands her to (unlike the Americans at this time, where it was perfectly ok to pound the beam) so she sort of speeds up her flight sequences to complete the skill and still signal a general lightness of movement. It’s like an extra level of athleticism she has to muster in order to remain an exponent of that school.

I adore Yang Bo’s beam work, but she seemed to have the worst luck when it came to the dismount at various competitions. I just can’t comprehend why everything was top tier perfection until the very end when (suddenly out of nowhere) she would choke! The same thing happened in the finals at ‘91 Worlds and it kills me to this day that at major events when it really counted that she was unable to fully keep her composure. Many gymnasts of this era later told of how they were starved and deprived of water during training not to mention having to endure cruelty. How could they perform with power and show amplitude when their bodies were weakened by lack of nutrition? Add this to years of over training and without the opportunity to recover fully from injuries, few reached the top. Even if they did, it must have been physically and mentally exhausting for them-particularly those whose ages were falsified and performed at a younger age than they should have. I will always admire their courage and determination as well as the incredible skills they performed, but it now when I look back at the joy gymnastics brought me during those years, it all seems a bit tainted and sad.

Sadly, it was not a mistake. After all these years, I learned that Brandy Johnson originally was third on the vault here, and even got the bronze during the medal ceremony. But one of the judges said she had put in her score incorrectly. That was allowed to be corrected, which moved Brandy up to a tie for second. (She was then awarded her silver medal before one of the men's medal ceremonies.) Had the Greek judge made a mistake, I imagine it would have been allowed to be corrected in a similar fashion.

Gymnastic series of at least two elements - sissone + cat leap + sissone 3. Mixed series of two elements - sissone + back handspring stepout 4. One gymnastic turn of at least 360 degrees - full turn 5. One gymnastic leap or jump with great amplitude - sissone 6. Silivas's 3 golds at these worlds were all an embarassment and she didn't deserve a single one. Unlike her 3 golds in Seoul which were all well deserved, her golds her were a sham and she should be ashamed of herself for accepting them.

@@dougierichardson484 i agree she was incredibile overscored. And for Seoul she deserved gold on beam and bars. 4th place on vault and floor

I am sad from your various videos you seem to hate Onodi. She is a lovely girl, a great sport, and a creative and very underrated gymnast. She should have won gold on vault in Barcelona on her own, not tied with Milosovici, and atleast tied Milosovici for gold on floor. Her bars and beam are often underscored too, even though she has weaknesses, particularly the low height of her releases on bars. She did not deserve a medal in the AA in Barcelona since she messed up beam super badly there, but a very underrated and underappreciated gymnast in general, and a beautiful girl too.

I don't hate Onodi. I just made a video about her where I say she should have won the 92 Worlds Floor Title.

Totally disagree with you about Henrietta Onodi. Not very good technique?! She was not perfect, but had solid as a rock and didn't fall once from the apparatus.

I feel like cowboy was almost the norm. I mean in 76 I noticed Comenici did it before I knew what it was called or that it was not ideal. I thought, huh, that’s a little ugly.

Yeah, I wished it weren’t in the way on several videos. Or at least make it smaller or put it where it doesn’t block the gymnasts. But, since I like the videos so much I just roll my eyes and sigh. Then go right back to listening.

Latest news is some Russian and Belarus athletes will be able to compete under a neutral flag. Right now there is not much information on qualifications though.
