Update: The 2025 Code has been released. All four of the missing Khorkina skills are still MIA. The two that bother you me the most are: 1) The Markelov. Just taken away for no reason 2) Her Khorkina I vault. Initially cuervos were removed, so it makes sense. HOWEVER, they were later re-added. But instead of Sveta getting her vault back, it's just been unnamed and grouped with Podkopayeva's vault as they are very similar. The only distinction is when the half twist occurs. The issue is that Khorkina did her vault a year before Podkopayeva did. So if ANYONE should have their vault taken away, it's Lilia.
I genuinely appreciate Khorkina's gymnastics and no Idc that she is "problematic" for American audiences, you don't have to love her as a person to see it. She was a brilliant gymnast who came up at an unimaginably hard time for Russia.
I just really can't stand that the FIG is far too casual about everything, offers no explanations or apologies, refuses to make corrections, and double standards are everywhere you look!! The level of unprofessionalism is FAR TOO MUCH!!
@@thesovgc I saw a video of skills that were just straight up erased because of a new rule that a skill have to be C or higher to be named, and sometimes an athlete will appear in the appendix section of a skill but not in the diagram. Like why....
That's better than being in neither like Khorkina 😭. As long as your name is in one or the other, it still counts. As I said in the video, skills have to have at least a C difficulty value in order to be eligible for named distinction. I don't think that rule is very new, at this point. It's probably been in place since 2006. The issue mostly appears to stem from the fact that Khorkina's skill was devalued from C to B in 2006, whereas the other named B skills had always been B. That would possibly make sense at least. But technically, anyone with a named skill below C should have it removed. At least according to the FIG and what they did to Khorkina's floor skill.
Amazing video! More Khorkina videos please !!! She will forever be my all-time fave. I loved the Diva behavior. It made the sport more theatrical and exciting.
Amen! I'll never forget the yelp she gave when her AA bars score came up in the final rotation at 95 Worlds, securing her the silver medal after a pretty poor performance in preliminaries. Who would do that nowadays?
Corrections: It was inevitable I would mess something up relating to bars. Khorkina's remaining eponymous transition skill is a free hip circle through handstand with half twist to hang on high bar--no Stalders involved. Please forgive me, and pray for me to better absorb the fundamentals of asymmetrical bars 💀. Also, there is video evidence of Nellie doing her handspring on 1 ½ off, only not from 74 Worlds, which is the competition from which she named it after herself. So I amend my statement in the video to 3, maybe 4, of the 6 Kims are legitimate. IMO. Sorry again 😭. Lastly, I was correct in my hunch that Khorkina got screwed over when the FIG decided that when a twist occurs is inconsequential in considering the skill a different one. At some point, the Cuervo vaults were reintroduced into the COP, only Khorkina's first eponymous vault was just grouped into the same box as Lilia's. Again, the fact that Khorkina competed her variation first technically SHOULD mean the vault should bear her name instead of Podkopayeva's, but we all know that is not what has occurred. It's so upsettin.
Your best video so far!! I enjoyed every second of it. And thank you so much for bringing some much needed respect to Khorkina's name. The way she gets disregarded by today's gymnastics fans does rub me the wrong way.
I appreciate it so much and I'm glad you liked it! I'm a bit irked about the couple tiny mistakes, but I'm about to start the script for the next one so I will get a chance at Rudemption 🙌
OMG, Wally. This was AMAZING! I had no idea about all the COP shenanigans. The amount of research and knowledge in your last few videos (this and the tale of two codes) is NEXT level! Absolutely amazing stuff. Thank you so much for this brilliant content. Be well!
Nelli is one of the worst things to happen to women’s gymnastics. She plays favorites. She’s been outright racist towards certain American gymnast. I don’t think it’s anything against Khorkina as a person. Nelli doesn’t want anyone to hold any records. If she could retroactively award herself more medals than Simone she would.
I absolutely agree that it isn't a personal thing. I included the stuff about Khorkina as a person bc a) I didn't want anyone to think I'm not aware of the comments she's made, and b) this discourse really has been ongoing for quite a few years now (obviously not related to just Khorkina) and I think it's very interesting.
I'm going to admit to watching gymnastics long before any of the commenters here had been born; from the scratchy black and white TV I sat on the floor enthralled with Caslavska and the baby faced Tourischeva. Before Khorkina, there was Saadi; tall and elegant. I followed the 76' spectacle and in hindsight is the games that began the morph into a sport of stunts over lyric strength. Remember in past days the competitors were all older and had mature shapes. Biles is is what, 26? that was 'young' in the past. Watching this video brought me up to speed; unfortunately all judged sports suffer from bias and tribalism-clan mentality to varying degrees gymnastics has this, and I would postulate that if you think the competition is tough on the floor, being in the administration a.k.a. judging would be stressful and even nasty if you didn't play the politics right. The fact that a grown woman with a stellar career in the sport, now in the drivers seat chose to glorify herself without any sting of sheepishness or regard of fact. It's the ego (she's a Leo) when given the chance, will go over the top to shine. Nellie, I'm disappointed that you think this is your highest good.
I’m a new subscriber and also binging all your videos. A longtime fan of gymnastics, I also look back somewhat wistfully to days gone by, when gymnastics was beautiful, and tumbling and dance elements worked together alongside musicality and body control to create beautiful shapes in art. While I can appreciate the power of today’s gymnastics, I often feel that MAG offers more grace and absolute mastery of different apparatus. Mastery should be more than power in gymnastics, imo. Loved this video; your final statements also really resonated with me. You’re making the beauty of the art more accessible to more today - thank you so much.
ITA with every word you wrote. It is incredible that in the year of our Aliya 2023, MAG has usurped the women in the Artistry department. Who woulda thunk it?
Not the Nina shade! But it’s absolutely true and one of the examples of how this modern CoP (especially of the current and last quad) are absolutely trash.
Khorkina's lines were amazing. She also never missed the small details. That's a huge pet peeve of mine: someone throwing a skill because they can land it but there's no toe point or the handstands aren't fully vertical etc. She never competed skills she couldn't master and master with a smile I did know the rule about only C rated skills or higher can be named for the gymnast. I feel that's unfair as the sport is always evolving and getting harder. Of course the Talavera from 1982 isn't difficult now, but it was then. I knew about Nellie Kim's vault score and changing the code of points, but I had no idea old skills were suddenly named for her 🙄
I really think the naming of skills for gymnasts is not helpful. It makes the sport even more difficult for people outside the sport to truly understand it. And it makes more sense that the skill names be more descriptive. And it opens the door to shenanigans like Nelli Kim's.
I personally couldn't care less what Khorkina has or hasn't said in the past - it doesn't affect at all her gymnastics and she still remains one of the greats! Fantastic video really informative and enjoyable. It must have taken you a lot of work - Thank You.
She was lovely when she performed. Long and lean. How I remember her. My goodness had no idea about this situation. She's been robbed. What treachery. What a very well put together video.
Great video, very informative. I'd be embarrassed to do what Kim has done, and besides... Simone, Aliya, Khorkina, Komova, Ponor... I mean, WTF, this beautiful sport is so much bigger than her, and will always be.
Hi Wally. Outstanding video. I love what you said at the end 'if you keep the masses ignorant, they will not know any better and they will expect mediocrity, unfortunately that is true of history in general ' A profound statement and true of modern life
I had NO IDEA this had happened to the last great female gymnast! I can barely follow the sport today -- Biles has great tricks, but NO ONE around today has any artistry compared to the great Khorkina
I knew about the 4 that were no longer there but I’d never heard any supposition as to why. And I had NO idea about the named skills of Kim’s that had been added. That’s disturbing! I’ve loved and watched gymnastics since the 1976 games. The corruption that’s come to light in the past few years makes me so sad. I hope that it all somehow gets noticed and is driven out.
I hate Khorkina's antics but is beyond question the impact and influence she has on gymnastics over the years. I am actually blocked from her instagram because a comment I made over the Ukranian war (best day of my life! this is so going to my tombstone🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣) but her gymnastics was always very interesting. My theory is that Nellie couldn't cope with another gymnast eclipsing her (with the most skills named after) as her whole career was about being eclipsed (first by Nadia, then by Mukhina, then by Davyvoda). But it would be really interesting if Nellie was already president during Khorkina's time. I don't think she would let Khorkina walk out of the Vault finals at the 1997 Worlds just because she fell on her first vault and didn't want to bother to do a second one if she is not winning gold anwyay. If it was me, I would make her do the second vault by threatening to remove her from all of the rest of EF Finals. I think Khorkina did get away with a lot of shit because nobody really stood up to her.
What I love most about Hortin is she had a different beam routine every month or every year every week the other girls did the same beam routine for five years and she just had so much experience and was a Beamer and could just change it up. however she felt and it was. She had some hard stuff her full twisting back handspring. I love that one.
I knew I would mess something up when it came to bars 💀. And the FIG is notoriously incompetent, but I think not working for positive change and improvement isn't an option. You may not see this as a targeted attack against Khorkina, but who had the most eponymous skills in 2006 compared to now? We can just shrug it off as a coincidence, but Nellie isn't stupid.
Praise be for RU-vid Editor letting me edit that out btw 😭. Thank you SO MUCH for pointing it out!! 💗 Eta: I didn't realize I said it wrong twice. FML 😭. Oh well, I pinned a comment 🙌
@@thesovgc I completely agree Nellie was incredibly problematic and not good for the sport at all, but I also don't want to give her more credit than she deserves, lol.
@@thesovgc- your logic isn’t quite correct. You’re saying Khorkina was targeted for being Khorkina. If Kim would have done it to any gymnasts that had the most number of named skills, it wasn’t an attack on Khorkina for being Khorkina.
@PeirsolFan2 I didn't mean to imply as such. I don't think it was personal in terms of who Khorkina was, but it was personal in terms that Khorkina had the most eponymous skills. Idk if that makes sense.
Thank you for this great video. It was such a pleasure to watch. You know I am not the biggest fan of Svetlana Khorkina (mostly because she over did it as a Diva) but there are people who are actually enjoying this kind of acting. It seems not fair though, that her skills are disappearing in the CoP - it makes no sense to take away the names, if the skill is reduced to a B. Gymnasts might still perform it - and why should it be nameless then? It was an accomplishment in a time, when those elements were rated higher in the CoP. This is so ridiculous. I wonder if Nelli Kim is the new Ellen Berger from the 80's.... She looks so important, when she stomps through the hall.... And it was sweet of you to mention my name. Thank you - I am glad we met over this media, sharing the same passion. I live your shirt by the way. Feel hugged from the other side of the earth.
Nellie Kim is no longer President of the WTC, which I have ambivalent feelings about bc she is so entertaining. But I don't have much interest in current elite gymnastics these days. Just don't disrespect our Legends!
Thank you so much!! I have further to go, but this is absolutely the video I am most proud of. It literally took SO LONG to make. I don't think people realize what video editing entails. (I know I really didn't before I started doing it.)
It is obvious the FIG dislikes Khorkina but I am not sure if the missing elements are a personal thing against her haha, especially considering the amount of random decisions the fig has made, i believe they don’t even know what they want for gymnastics… so controversial stuff surrounding Nellie Kim indeed… 17:05 People do good and bad things and one should not be clouded by the other…but apparently nowadays you have to choose one and erase the other Great video, I imagine the work it must have took
This was super informative, but also enraged me to no end. Sidenote--- I did not know about the quervo (sp?) vaults!! I think they look soooo cool! What is the safety concern?? And I completely agree that once a skill is named after you it should stay that way because skill values fluctuate from code to code and that is not the gymnasts fault!! And finally, instead of adding a bunch of skill names for herself with very questionable skills (like, she's claiming she is the first to do a double back??) she should've focused on getting that wild beam dismount a D value! Like...how is it possible to have a named skill with no value when apparently the skill had to be C or higher! Am I missing something???
1. I clarify this in my video about the 1991 Worlds Vault Final, but cuervos weren't banned for long, and when they were brought back, they were just grouped with the barani versions. So Khorkina's eponymous first vault IS back in the COP, just under the same number and name as Podkopayeva's vault. (Which is unfair for the reasons stated in the video.) 2. Nellie's beam dismount is rated an E, I believe. It's the skill on floor that has no value--the layout open into double pike.. aka a double pike with good set 😭. Nellie is clearly exempt from the "minimum C value" distinction. I recently watched her beam routine from 77 Europeans, and she did a turn I'm surprised she didn't try to get named for her. But she probably never did it at Worlds or Olympics.
@thesovgc ahhhh ok gotcha. Thanks for the further clarification. The layout open double pike skill is HILARIOUS! How is she not embarrassed by that? She might as well add another named skill for herself described as a "double whip in flight" aka a DLO!! Lmaoooo this would be a fun game we can call "The Kim Game" where you have to take known skills and then describe them in a different way lolzzz
I always got an off, mean feeling exuding from Nellie Kim. From interviews, her attitude, she gives off militant, jealous, angry vibes. Maybe par for the course living in Russia, and I think it was resentment /jealousy that Nadia appeared & stole the entire spotlight. The only Soviet gymnast I got genuine warmth from is Olga, she's Belorussian or white Russian but most of them were very cold bitches even towards each other if not especially. On top of this, every system is corrupt now. Everything is corrupt & "bought". So although I wasn't aware of this happening, none of it surprises me in the least. I wasn't aware Nellie was a head judge or had vendetta against younger gymnasts? How unprofessional & abusive, there should be a governing body of neutrality that oversees accountability & prevents such abuse of authority, but that would probably also be corrupted. I feel very sad for this girl & remember her fondly, mostly for her super model beauty & height, but she beat the odds!!! It was nice to see a taller gal for a change, kick some butt out there!!! Defying the "ideal" body image. I also liked Ludmilla Terescheva's more natural type body, but I don't like her as a person. Nasty like an ice queen!!! These little gymnasts got quite the Ego's and could be brutal & ugly! Nellie Kim should be removed & reversal of her dictator type policies at once!!! I have heard Olga Korbut has complained about her moves being "reassigned" to the favored gymnast of the moment, by the head division. I'm not sure if Nellie Kim has anything to do with that, maybe. Although I didn't think they had a rivalry but maybe they were all rivals, what a terrible "sport" when you can't even be friends with your own team. My mother's country Czechoslovakia was definitely prevented from winning or producing anymore, in retaliation for politics. The soviets ruled the roost back then. Now it is all commercialized & unattractive, unappealing, the girls I'll admit never looked totally healthy, these days they remind me of bullfrogs on steroids? I'm not saying that to be vile, it's honestly all I can think of to compare. They appear unnatural, buffed up, odd. But many gymnasts were never very healthy, Olga started smoking at just 10 to stomp out her hunger. Horrifying. I feel very sad for all of them. They were overworked, starved & stressed, demanded a lot of them. Their bitchy attitudes must have been part of that price!!! Terribly unfortunate. I adore Olga though, the last I knew she is in Scottsdale where I used to live. I'm really happy for her, bless her!!! She gave off such vulnerability at the same time performing daring, courageous innovative elements, her passionate artistic form along with her playing off the crowd, this driven yet odd combination is very alluring & it's wasn't that she was the best, it was that she won hearts. That is what matters to true fans, not technical prestige. 🌹🌹🌹
I disagree. Her routines were too simple. Probably bc of her height, but I was never impressed with her. Plus her poor sporsmanship makes her extremely unlikeable. The only year she may have robbed was Australia, and the vault fiasco. But then everyone who vaulted on that faulty vaultv were robbed bc they all had their attention broken. But this gymnast is the only one who showed terrible sportsmanship. It's very hard to feel sympathy for individuals like that.
When do you think she showed poor sportsmanship? For taking off her silver medal in Sydney? IIRC that was because she was disappointed in her team, not because she thought they should have won. She always seemed pretty gracious to me. NBC edited her to look very sour when Zamo beat her for the OGM on floor, but who knows how accurate that was. She may have thought she should have beaten Patterson (or won other times when she didn't), but she was always friendly and respectful to the other competitors. To say her routines were too simple is, with all due respect, preposterous. Especially prior to 2001. Her beam and floor definitely weren't up to par after that, but she was right up there on vault and bars until she retired. And at her peak, she did skills on beam that haven't even been attempted by anyone else to my knowledge (gainer layout full).
On Wikipedia, it says at one time a gainer triple twist was named for her.. But I don't think that's actually the truth Ellen 💀. I'm almost positive she never threw that at an eligible meet, but I could be wrong. I literally learn new stuff every day.
Wally, as I understand, Carly's name beginning with a K has more to do with translation. C sounding like S in cyrillic rather than the K sound. What were the safety concerns with Cuervos? As I understood it, twist placement was disregarded in many vaults and skills because of confusion in differing letter values and what constitutes a twist "in" and/or "out". The example I remember getting from our gym's liaison was the Phelps/Tsuk LO 1/2 situation.
I have no idea what exactly the safety concern was in regard to Cuervos other than it was apparently dangerous to upgrade them via adding additional twists. They were removed in the 2006 Code. My conspiracy theory makes just as much sense ngl
I believe Memmel's name was also misspelled. Not sure if that's since been corrected, but we can't use Cyrillic as an excuse for that one. (Or maybe we can. Who knows.) ETA: Just checked and it's still spelled "Chelsia".
@@thesovgc LOL. No, we can't call Cyrillic foul on that. It might still be translation though. Think about how many different ways we see Eastern Bloc girls' names written. Is having Alena, Alona, and Alyona all show up in English television graphics or result read-outs for the same gymnast(Polozkova)'s first name any less egregious? I shouldn't have just singled out Cyrillic either. There are lots of languages that have, if not completely different alphabets, diversions of pronounced souns. German, for example, also traditionally uses K for hard C sound and C for S sound. *incidentally, Polozkova also lost the vault that had been named after her when Khorkina's went away.
@@thesovgc I am relatively ambivalent about the FIG. I don't know if I vilify the organization as much as I do individual countries/personalities. Of course, I was voted "Most likely to stay in a weak and vaguely toxic relationship way past what my friends feel is healthy...or find socially comfortable" I am not opposed to a open-ended scoring system. I am opposed to the one we have.
This is so deep!. If names were listed to change to show who's responsible with each change made in the code of points, people would fear being put on blast. But....liol Kim is beyond suss. I think the chain of command should change every quad especially with power trip vibes going. Maybe it is more than one person being shady but it could just be some ass kissing. And I do not think someone who falls on an event should be out of medal contention.
I hope your voice is heard ... I'm happy people were listened to about warming up for finals. HA! We know safety is more like a good excuse diversion/ scheme behind their choice making.
Winning/medaling without falls is the nature of the open-ended Code. The fact that it happened the very first year is beyond hilarious to me though 😭. I like Ferrari btw and think she should have won the OGM on Floor in Tokyo. And Bieger and 06 Izbasa weren't exactly appealing alternatives either. Memmel ofc had injured herself previously and Nastia wasn't able to do AA, so the pickings were pretty slim to begin with. I really wish Pavlova had been able to put it together at Worlds one of those years *sigh*.
Did Svetlana say something recently on social media that was offensive or were you talking about things she said/ did when she was competing. I know she was controversial in her day but I feel like you were referring to something recent that I missed.
She has said a lot of controversial things since her retirement, and a couple of interviews from 2-5 years ago (I lose track of time too easily) should be easy to find via Gymnovosti.
@@amandine2239 the situation in Russia is so bleak if you publicly speak against the regime. It's terrifying. There are professional tennis players who've spoken out that are terrified to return. I imagine Khorkina needed absolutely no prodding, but being propagandized since birth has gotta be a bitch. I've read that apparently Chusovitina and Boginskaya have shown some kind of pro-war opinion, but idk if it's true or not. I understand that politics are more complicated than they sometimes appear IMO. A Russian retired skater I follow on Insta said something pretty early in the war that showed she has a completely different perspective on what is being fought for. I don't think it's true, but she would probably know her reality better than I do so who knows? 🤷♂️
@@amandine2239 I've also learned a lot of first hand information from this cool af girl from Kharkiv who's talked to a streamer I like a few times. She says that there are some Russians who care, but most of them don't. I absolutely support Ukraine and it's beyond f***ed up they were invaded, but I also think about things the American government has done that I have no idea about and that it would be horrible if I was personally held responsible for the atrocities of my government. The girl from Kharkiv made it sound like the general Russian attitude is indifference as opposed to brainwashed so who knows. I've also seen miles long lines at the border from people trying to flee to Georgia and Kazakhstan. These are dire times 😪
Separating the art from the artist is an especially complicated debate if applied to gymnastics, which straddles the dividing line between art and sport. No one would strike the gold medal winning time of a 200 metre freestyle swimmer from the record because they spoke in favour of extra judicial detention of political opponents. Svetlana Khorkina's record in gymnastics should stand apart from her outspoken views. In any case, Nellie Kim didn't erase Khorkina from the COP because Kim in an LGBTQ ally. It was because Kim wants the most glory as as Soviet/Russian gymnast to accrue to herself.
Am i seriously the only one who prefers the current code split? I hated the code scoring before; I think it significantly contributed to shady judging.
It definitely did, but I don't think it's eliminated funny business completely. Transparent scoring showing the deductions as they do in figure skating would be a big step in the right direction.
So Nelli Kim was the reason Daniela didn't win the Olympic all-around...interesting. I wonder why, though, she would erase literally half of her fellow countrywoman's skills while padding the books with her own? She could've added her name without removing Svetlana's. Also, the way she approaches the judges with that look on her face...scary.
As I say in the video, Nellie's score for Daniela's vault didn't affect the final outcome (unless one thinks she would have given her a 10, which I don't). As for the second part, I think it's an ego thing. She wanted to be the gymnast with the most named skills. And as she had to take some real leaps to get to 7, some of Khorkina's had to be excised to achieve that goal. One last thing.. Since the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Nellie has represented Belarus.. whereas Sveta is obviously Russian. So I'm not sure Nellie considers her a countrywoman. (Not that I think it would make a difference either way.)
I used to think that but seeing all the videos I believe Daniela lost the AA tittle due her performance on the balance beam. Vault wasn't her strongest apparatus so we could expect her score were lower than Shushunova. Silivas' FX & UB were excellent during that competition but she made mistakes on the BB. She could have get those 0.25 if her routine had been better.
Oh what I wouldn’t give to see Kim and Khorkina go head to head in anything. Debate, fist fight, don’t care. They give strong unstoppable force vs immovable object energy
Has there ever been insight on tension between Kim and Khorkina? Is it merely jelaousu of Khorkina’s accomplishments and being recognized by her country moreso than Kim?
I don't think Nelli disliked Khorkina or was jealous of her PERSONALLY. But she absolutely wanted to be considered a more influential and innovative gymnast than she actually was. What better way to do that than to literally try to change the history of your sport? And if you can't do it by changing the results, you can put your name on things. So Nelli did that per her power as President of the WTC. And what a horrific abuse of power it was. And a pox on everyone else who went along with it. I honestly think poor Svetlana Vasilyevna was a victim of circumstance, and the fact she actually HAD been extremely innovative and garnered eight eponymous skills in 10 years. And I think Nelli got greedy and went all in to make sure she would have the most eponymous skills in the COP. Because she's an egomaniac. Khorkina was obviously in Nelli Vladimirovna's way and thus first in line to have her legacy altered to make room for Nelli's.
Bc I misspoke and also low-key suck at bars skills. I actually said it twice and edited one of them out. I can't fix it now without having to re-upload the whole video.
Wow I didn’t realise Nelly was so blatantly biased and egotistic. This is so blatantly obvious now that you pointed it out so why hasn’t anyone complained about her? These are obvious points you are making and she is clearly abusing her position of power. It is corrupt. Why is she allowed to get away with this. Gymnastics is such a hard and short lived career so she shouldn’t be allowed to just wipe out anyone’s achievements and then simply add herself to such extremes. The Olympic games is about fairness and equality in sport. The FIG has to represent these same beliefs. I don’t feel she has the fairness to be in charge of the FIG. THERE IS NO ROOM FOR JEALOUSY.
@@thesovgc i am glad of that. It’s such a beautiful sport and don’t want crap like that to harm the girls who work so damn hard just to make it to that level. I hope they reinstate korkinas name and moves. How devastating for her. Talk about a kick in the guts. I loved Svetlana and her moods. Such a loveable diva hahaha.
Thank you for doing this video. This tall gymnast was one of my favorites back then. I remember her last competition and how they made a huge deal (rightfully so!) about it. It's unfortunate that Ms. Kim perpetuates the typical Asian mentality (even though she's a Russian, I believe.. or maybe not! ) But it's quite typical of Asians to behave as such! Trust me, I know because I've worked with several of them!
If you give Daniele's crummy vaulting a 9.95 then there is no choice but to give Shushunova a 10, as Shushunova's vault while not truly perfect would be a 10.2 by any standard so easy that Silivas can get a 9.95.
Also in the AA, judges could only score in increments of 0.1, so all those hypothetical scores are not possible. Shushunova getting a 10 with a lean makes more sense if you know this. I definitely would have had Silivaș at 9.9 and Shushunova at 10. But in reality, Yelena is probably 0.2 better than Daniela. At least.
They have to remove the names of gymnasts, especially those who were naturally gifted and profoundly innovative like Khorkina and who successfully performed new skills and earned their place in the code of points fair and square, so Nellie Kim can proceed to continue naming every move she ever pondered, with no record of ever performing, let alone successfully after herself. She is beyond corrupt and frankly just a laughing stock at this point, with more attitude than raw talent in her competitive career. Fortunately, no one in the know of the gymnastics world actually takes Nellie Kim seriously, but rather just put up with her to avoid the endless pontificating and bloated, unjustified ego raining down on everyone. While the same group of people in the know will always be happy to bend a knee to Svetlana Khorkina.
Agreed. It isn’t that she’s merely a diva and I strongly disagree with using bland language like questionable to describe some of the things she has said or her actions. The most egregious of this is her victim blaming when the abuse scandals came to the surface. That is absolutely unconscionable and intolerable behavior. It’s stuff like that which disqualifies her from honorifics because part of athletics and sports is good sportsmanship. And Khorkina knows she has influence and her voice carries weight such that not only is she invalidating the experiences of her fellow gymnasts, bullying gymnasts with less influence, but she’s sending an implicit message that abusive behavior is not as big of a deal and ignores the reality of power assymetry between coaches/doctors and gymnasts, most of whom are barely into adolescence or are adolescent.
15:14 ??? What do you mean there's no video of it? Nellie did that vault at the Montreal vault EF. It was her 2nd vault. She was the first to do the Tsuk tuck full. She and Shaposhnikova did the layout version first in 1978. I don't mind her getting credit for the double tuck...as long as Filatova and Korbut are included in there too since they all did the skill in Montreal. Since there are free (aerial) dismounts in the code already, I don't see any reason her aerial 1/4 double can't be a named skill...especially since it is a sick dismount and incredibly unique. The open double pike is just stupid. I'm cool with Khorkina's first vault going the way of the Phelps. There is some congruency there because it wasn't just her vault nor was it even just vault that was effected. The floor leap and the Markelov losing her name are so ridiculous it actually pisses me off, and I legitimately don't want to defend her. I respect her gymnastics, her determination, and her desire to infuse the sport with artistry. However, given how much of a darling she was throughout her career, and given her behavior since her retirement...I just can't muster up any sympathy for her.
Yeah, I wasn't aware she did it in 76. In any case, it was named for her at 74 Worlds, where she clearly didn't successfully perform it, hence the 8.6 score. Thank you for pointing out the corrections so I won't make such tragic mistakes next time 🙌
Are there free aerial dismounts that show more than one position? I agree it's a great skill (as I said.. err, wrote) in the video. I just don't know that Nellie would be so kind to reward someone if the shoe were on the other foot. Maybe I'm wrong, though. I'm not eager to give Nellie the benefit of the doubt. Especially after finding out after I filmed this she was apparently temporarily banned/suspended from judging for cheating in 1990 and STILL was allowed to become President of the WTC. BANANAS!!
@@thesovgc I'm sorry. I know I sound like I'm being bitchy or nit-picking. Honestly, I have no idea how to create thumbnails or edit videos so I have no room to talk. I didn't know Nellie did a FHS 1.5 at 1974 worlds. I only ever saw video of the Tsuk back tuck/pike thing from that year, and it was a flop.
@@matthewhines9787 well, that is the argument/problem. There is no evidence of her doing the vault at that meet but that's the one she chose when she named it after herself. Maybe she meant to put Montreal, idk.
@@matthewhines9787 I don't mind constructive criticism. I welcome it. I pride myself on being as accurate as possible and beat myself up when I make mistakes. I'm glad I was able to pin a correction relatively quickly thanks to your feedback, as well as Eric's. I know people don't realize everything that goes into video editing, but it's so much more than the subject and script. (The time it took just to create that time-line alone.. just to use for like 20 seconds. Jesus) Maybe you didn't like anything about it, and that's OK too.
Since you have a platform, it’s important to mention that UKRAINE, the country of 2 olympic AA champs (Gutsu and Lilia), is being bombed and the people are being terrorized, gRaped, murdered, starved, etc by the russians…. I was a die hard khorkina fan, and the ugliness she has shown FORMER Ukrainian friends/competitors is disgusting…. I TOTALLY SEPARATE THE ART FROM THE PERSON, but as a gymnastics commnunity, we DO make change by bringing awareness (ex: the Karolyi abuse, Nasar, etc). All I ask (as a friend of several Ukrainian world and olympic team members) is to bring awareness. LOVE YOUR VIDEOS!!!!!!
I made a video shortly after the invasion about Yana Demyanchuk where I tried my best to do that 💗ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4wMLGJK-_LE.html
👏 👏 👏 I cannot tell you how much shock and awe I was in to see a woman who'd grown up behind the Iron Curtain speaking English that well in 1980. It basically told me that Miss Nellie? Oh she has big plans. Huge! And she absolutely did. Now did she always use her powers and influence for good? To quote Deborah Cox, ABSOLUTELY NOT... But has she brought me more unintentional comedic joy than 99% of people I've known of? Абсолютно!
She really isnt and never was a great gymnast. She probably would have made a great dancer. She had the artistry and little of the gymnastic. If judging had been fair, she would have had less wins.
@thesovgc Agreed. I actually did an in depth analysis years ago. Her artistry on floor was great. Her bars were creative. I think she could have been much better bit Her demeanor held her back.
