In the lastest investigation in our Robbed Goddess Question Mark Series, we go back 30+ years to the 1993 World Gymnastics Championships in Birmingham, England, UK, and take a closer look at the balance beam final. Many feel that Dominique Dawes was the rightful winner, and that Lavinia Miloșovici won based on her name, reputation, and federation.
But is that the case? Get ready for a dose of nostalgia as we go back in time and attempt to answer that question and so much more!
How to do gymnastics and doing gymnastics are things we look at in this exciting video from the Golden Age of Gymnastics.

Hi Wally, once again your reasoning is very sound. I was never comfortable with Lavinia winning this beam gold, but the code ruled. Her two Omeliancheks were to me a poor attempt to do something similar to the Miller. LiLi showed the type of choreography and Dominique the difficulty that draws in fans to the sport. Gymnastics and Figure Skating are sports that have the ability to self correct by rewriting the code of points, and I feel you have pinpointed a moment in time where the sport started down the wrong path. Thanks for your lovely and informed postings!

You’re really speaking my language with the Romanians working the code in the most boring ways possible under Octavian Belu and Mariana Bitang. It was genius but boy was it frustrating when you saw other feds doing what they could to add some style, originality, difficulty, and some form of fluid dance to their routines. As the code became more and more stringent, the routines became more uniform and boring overall . This is why Romania really suffered the most with the open-ended scoring system. I think the Karyolis realized the Americans had to do the same thing, and it has affected the U.S. gymnastics philosophy to this day, even under the open-ended system where it was all about execution and minimizing risk without much style or attention to “panache”… for the most part.

I agree! I think watching compulsories from the old days was better to watch than their boring routines! And how on EARTH did they allow the same move twice in the same routine?? Boring.

I always thought Dawes should have won. I remember when this happened and was so heartbroken for her. She did an amazing job. Milosovici performed well, but I always looked at her routine as safe or boring. It didn’t have any “wow” factor to it. Dawes had her faults, but I felt that night, she performed the best out of all of them.
@rdg___
@rdg___ 9 месяцев назад
I think sometimes the actual issue with Dawes is that she is bow-legged and that affects her line. She certainly bends her knees in her back handsprings on beam, but she otherwise does a good job of keeping her legs straight. I think here in '93, they are probably the slightest bit bent on the layouts, in my opinion no worse than a lot of the ugly Romanian gymnastics we were made to suffer through in the 90's, but again, her bow-legs makes the line look "worse". From '94 on, her form was really improved and she keeps them quite straight, again with the exception of the back handsprings, though even the knee bend is not as bad in '94 and beyond. I often think about Dawes and Rebecca Bross together, as Bross was knock-kneed, which again affected her line and made her knees look knobby and she had to bow her feet together on bars in order to keep them together. Just an interesting thing to think about when judging form--gymnasts cannot control their anatomy! Great video, btw~

You forgot something: those "ugly" Romanian gymnasts worked very hard to make perfect beam routines ! They could be beaten only by the judges at the Olympics '96 in Atlanta : no way Lilia should have been on the top of the AA with her mistakes ! And in the floor final the biggest difficulty and perfect execution was obviously on the side of Simona Amânar but she wasn't as pretty as Podkopaeva to "deserve" at least a joined gold medal on floor ! That's why you suffered so much in the '90s ?!? 😄
@rdg___
@rdg___ 7 месяцев назад
@@danielacinderella9501 I didn't say the gymnasts themselves were ugly. That's offensive and inappropriate. I said their gymnastics was. A lot of Romanian gymnasts in the 90's specifically had bent legs all over the place on beam and so many of them bent their legs on their double layouts on floor, that's what I was talking about.

Omg, your deep dive into the code (one of my favorite things about this channel, btw) TOTALLY answered my question about what happened to those insane 9.9++ scores that were at their absolute zenith during the 1992 Olympics. Dawes should've won gold idgad what anyone says I was there she did amazing on beam in finals and Kelly Hill said that race played a part in Dominiques treatment from judges in the some meets she was even told by a judge. But dom was so amazing and the back to back passes made her a household name. Doms year was 94 minus the world's she was almost every meet she entered that year. You also have to remember judging was very corrupt back then as well I've been to every only pics but Tokyo and countless worlds and the biggest issue back then was judging

@metsdudenj 4 месяца назад
@@longbranch11207 Her coach mentioned race, but I can tell you, Dawes did not have the execution or form of Shannon, and as you know, as long as you meet the start value requirements, a harder routine back then did not mean you would score higher. I understand your frustration. You can imagine my anger during the 1988 fx final and the GDR overscoring at 87 worlds and 88 Olympics. Dawes was highly regarded by international judges, especially on floor and bars. Beam she was also quite good given her difficulty, but she was not in the same class as Miller, Podkopeaeva in terms of execution, form and grace.
@longbranch11207
@longbranch11207 4 месяца назад
Why is it’s so hard to believe that race had something to do with her low scoring at times ? One judge told her this behind the scenes, Kelli comment on this and Dawes herself commented on this . I was reminded of Kathy Johnson's observation of Simona Amanar's bar routine at the 1997 Worlds -- the first year after the compulsories got abolished. "The Romanians know exactly how to get around the Code of Points in their minimalist approach. This routine obviously lacks the creativity, style, and originality of Svetlana Khorkina's: but at least on PAPER, it's worth every bit as much."

I think people were just looking at 3 layouts and a full in vs one layout and a double tuck. In the previous code high difficulty was seen as being superior. Similarly there was a lot of outrage at Strug not medaling on floor with amazing difficulty and Bobrova winning with front tumbling. This is the beginning of what is now called “code-whoring” and it really did change the sport.

This was the first major comp under the new Code, the first not to have originated in the Russian language. There was a power shift in the sport as the USSR dismantled itself. I really enjoy your breakdowns, but I enjoyed Li Li’s routine most. Dawes had very poor leg form in all her tumbling skills and for me this marred her work significantly. I thought her score was very much too high here. Milosovici was a compromise winner to me. If only Li hadn’t had the time penalty.

@@rolandgreen7484 My bad. I'm used to talking to people who, because it's a set of initiatives and exercises that are performed together in order to reach a greater long-term goal, see a gymnast's "program" to mean their efforts in all their competitive events. Where as "event" or "apparatus" refers to the routine on an individual piece of equipment...as in event finals. So by referring to Gina's program, I meant her 4 routines as a whole...as well as the general philosophy and areas of her her all around campaign at those wrlds. She had relatively simple routines with less than stellar execution, but relied on the "big 4 bump" and going clean with confidence to get big scores and the judges fell for it.

I’m sorry but as a professional ballerina we’re expected to perform over splits in all directions (meaning legs split more than 180 degrees). I started in gymnastics but was quickly sent to ballet school in Moscow because of my potential height. If I’d stayed in gymnastics I’d have the option to choose my preferred side for splits, turns etc. In ballet, only male dancers can pick sides for variations (solos) only. Most of the choreography is to the right side and I’m a natural lefty, but it doesn’t matter. Since starting ballet school to now being a professional, I’ve had to be better on my right side and enjoy the rare moments when the choreography calls for left turns and jumps. I’m grateful for that now because I’m the rare ballerina whose body is completely even and injury free. Спасибо большое, Елена Рябинкина🙏🏻🩰 19:25

As a professional ballet dancer, there is not an expectation to do grand. Jetes or sau de chats, sissones or anything pass 180 so I don’t agree with that……. Every Gymnast flexibility is different. There are some who have beautiful lines, but like power, and those who have power, but lack the flexibility or the lines, and then there are some who have both.
