Oksana Chusovitina is a legend among athletes. At the age of 48, more than double the age that many female gymnasts retire, she is still going strong. She is currently bidding to compete in her NINTH Olympic games next summer in Paris. (The record is 10.) She has devoted her entire life to gymnastics, and built having her family around it.
Today we are going back to 1991, a year that pre-dates Oksana's FIRST Olympics. The 1991 World Gymnastics Championships in Indianapolis was an incredibly seminal, historic, and unforgettable event. It marked the last time the gymnasts of the Soviet Union, who had been the trendsetters and gold standard for decades, would compete under that flag, as their country was no more.
Oksana comprised one-sixth of the final Soviet World team and competed in the individual Vault and Floor Finals. We take a look at the entirety of the Vault Final and its incredibly suspicious judging. Unfortunately, that was true of a lot of the judging we saw in Indy. And when you see that the President of the Women's Technical Commmittee appears to be on her last legs, both literally and figuratively, it just brings up even more questions than the multitude of ones I've pondered for decades.
