In this video we look at the Air Speed Indicator a learn how winds and air pressure can effect what it displays. I briefly discuss Pressure Altitude and Density Altitude, And give you a formula that roughly calculates your true air speed.

These mini lessons are still relevant in 2020. Thank you so much for taking the time to do this. I'm starting flight school next summer, so videos like this will allow me to go into training more prepared.

Hi Cory, Your right some things will not change for some time. I know GPS systems are taking over and the VOR will eventually be a thing of the past however you will need to know all this "stuff" now for your Private Pilot Certificate, I hope these videos help you in some way, good luck and let me know how you are doing along the way. Thanks for watching :-) Blessings, skip

@@WEHVideos Well put! GPS and advanced avionics are certainly making flying safer and easier, but I firmly believe that understanding how to pilot an aircraft without the bells and whistles produces better pilots. The advancements are wonderful, but in an emergency situation, I want my pilot to know how to fly the aircraft without assistance.
@WEHVideos

RIGHT you are Cory and with that attitude you will make a great pilot! Anyone can fly an airplane with very little training but when things go wrong, and they will, knowing your airplane, understand how systems work and what makes the airplane fly will make all the difference in your ability to make the right decisions quickly to get you down safely in an emergency. Thanks! I certainly hope I can become a skilled private pilot. I live right down the street from one of the most respected flight schools in the state of MD, so I feel compelled to take advantage of that. And you're right, eventually something WILL go wrong and that's where the training and knowledge can be a matter of life and death. I've read too many horror stories of licensed commercial pilots making simple mistakes while having very little experience hand flying. These minor errors, coupled with exclusive reliance on technology ultimately lead to hundreds of lost lives. I'm determined to avoid being lost in the cockpit during an unforeseen circumstance. Thanks again for the videos! Looking forward to watching all of them.

Nice, good points, at sea there are same issues, speed over ground ( SOG) and speed through water (STW), which may become very critical. but is there any GPS system as an aid to air navigation which can directly indicate the GS ?
@WEHVideos
@WEHVideos 7 лет назад
Hi jamshid, Yes most GPS indicate GS or ground speed. In X Plane's Garmin 430 GS is displayed in the display's bottom portion. You see: DIS, DTK, and BRG on top. Below that you see GS, TRK, and ETE. GS is your ground speed. Blessings, skip

Hello, Skip. How are you? I would to ask for a piece of advice if you don't mind. Soon I will be flying X-Plane 11 and will be using a Cessna a lot of time. The question is, for a beginner which would be better, a joytick or a yoke? I have read somewhere that the CH yokes do not bring sufficient documentation to set up. Please help, Skip. Thank you very much. God bless you, Skip.
@WEHVideos
@WEHVideos 6 лет назад
Hi Larissa, My suggestion would be the yoke mainly because the Cessna has a yoke so it will be more realistic for you. You might want to watch my video on equipment (see link below) if you haven't already. One thing I forgot to mention in the video is the Eclipse yoke also has two wheels you can program for trimming so if you decide to get a yoke the Eclipse is a good choice, I've been using one for years. As for documentation your really don't need much, just plug it into a usb port and go to setup in X Plane. If you have any problems I'm sure you could find a video on setting it up or let me know and I might be able to help. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9SiJwp9NvlU.html Let me know which way you go and welcome to X Plane. Why can't we simply multiply 2X10 then add 98 to get 118kts true airspeed? Thanks
@WEHVideos
@WEHVideos 4 года назад
Hi Sarath, The math for figuring out TAS is a bit more complicated than simple math but here is a formula for calculating TAS. It's pretty accurate: TAS = ((IAS * .02) * (Altitude/1000)) + IAS Here you take your IAS (Indicated Air Speed) times .02. multiply that number by your altitude divided by 1000 then to that number add that to your IAS and this will give you your True Air Speed. Check out an App I wrote for wind correction angle here and read the description there are other formulas you might be interested in: forums.x-plane.org/index.php?/files/file/56556-wind-correction-revised/ Hope this helped. Blessings, skip

@@WEHVideos Thanks. Now I noticed that the IAS was 100 at counter 9.16.

It is indeed a relevant subject and is very well presented and explained in this video. The subject may seem somewhat complex, since it is about analyzing relative velocities. When investigating additional information on this topic I found a NASA website that I found very interesting and that I leave here the link: www.grc.nasa.gov/www/k-12/airplane/move.html.

Skip i love your videos one question i have fsx and in 3d cockpit view when i zoon in the instruments to see better the outside view is also zoomed in and that mess with my landings because i see runway closer than it is can u help

Hi Shafeeq, I know what you mean and I don't know of a way to only zoom in on the instruments, sorry. I will do some research and see if that somehow is possible. Blessings, skip

Sorry no luck. You can adjust "how close you sit to the panel" or the viewpoint as it's called in X Plane Plane Maker this might help if you are having trouble reading your instruments. This would permanently have the effect of moving your seat forward to get closer if you know what I mean. But you can not change this in the sim only in Plane Maker so it's not a zoom function.
