To those still alive and the families of those hard-working women and men thank you. I wish our country especially the growers weren't so greedy and had treated everyone with the dignity and respect they deserved. It's odd you don't hear about the Philipino strikes, that Itliong was one tough guy! I'm 34 and barely learning about this, wish they showed this in schools.

Manongs dont mean elder by the way. It means Brothers. It is a shortened Filipino form of the Spanish Word "Hermano".
@mark030531

We mainly use it as "elder" now, though. The rare times I hear it used, it's to talk to a much older stranger.

Hey how do Filipino Americans get confused if they are Asian or not? The Philippines just hosted the Asian Games. The Philippines are one of the founding members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. The Philippines do not compete in the Pacific Games with other Pacific Islands nations. The Philippines do not join Pacific Islands Forum like other Pacific Islands countries. If they even spent 1 minute to look it up, they'd find out the Philippines is in Southeast Asia.

Maybe because some dont know their history. We are Southeast Asians. But dont expect all of us are " pure blooded" Southeast Asian Filipino We have been conquered by Spain, America, then Japanese mixed in WW2. We have been trading with China before Spain came. Our leader in Manila, Rajah Sulayman was the grandson of the King of Borneo who lost the Fight to Spain. Southeast Asian. But colorful history.

Can you call Filipino immigrant in the early 1920 or 30s when the Philippines is a colony of the US at the time. Now do you call Guam or Hawaiian locals immigrants also when they move to the mainland?
