1986. The year of the secret Led Zeppelin reunion rehearsals and Jimmy Page's own venture with The Firm coming to an end after a solid follow-up album that showcased the band's songwriting skills and musicianship. Tony Franklin, Chris Slade, Jimmy Page and Paul Rodgers where a tight band that was reaching a good level of chemistry on-stage that sadly was over before time. John Paul Jones got into production and revealed an interest in composition behind the scenes. Robert Plant kept his rockabilly explorations while he thought about the coming 1987 vibes and where to go from there. #johnpauljones #ledzeppelin #jimmypage #robertplant #documentary #classicrock

Great work JCM... I love how Jimmy is so laid back. He's one of those guys who doesn't have to blow his own trumpet like *ahem* Plant. It's always interesting to listen to what Jimmy has to say. A true legend.

I hear Jimmy did not like touring with Paul as per Jimmy, "going on tour with Paul is like hanging out with your grandmother." Paul also had serious addiction problems mostly with booze but became sober after Bad Co. split and Paul was committed to a clean, professional life. Jimmy was still a very heavy drinker up until the Page / Plant days as one of the conditions Plant had was Jimmy had to be clean and sober at all times while touring which is why those tours (95'-99') were some of Jimmy's best live work. Jimmy would not become completely sober until 2001 when he finally quit drinking altogether.

Brilliant Episode: As much as I loved The Firm, it always felt like a side project that these guys were doing. There was no way The Firm could be bigger than the identities within the band. 1986 was such a transitional year. Everything was on MTV during this time. You had to have the somewhat talent to play and the LOOK to play. That's why the hairbands, with their glitz and glamour, hit it big (Poison, Motley Crue, Bon Jovi, Ratt...etc.) and bands like The Firm, Blue Oyster Cult, Deep Purple...etc. took a back seat. Even Dire Straits took a back seat in their video "Money for Nothing" to the cartoon figures because the band didn't fit the hair band narrative.

Great job on these Zep docs! The Firm was the most underrated band of the '80s and maybe the most underrated band of all-time. Both albums are flawless. The 1st album a true powerhouse, every song kicks ass. The 2nd, also great with a few stand outs. My favorite is the first one. "Midnight Moonlight", "Money Can't Buy", amazing stuff. Every song is perfect! Solid from start to finish! My favorite Firm song might be "Fortune Hunter". Jimmy's playing during this period was incredible. Also liked that they included "Prelude" at the shows. Jimmy was on fire. Such a shame that they did not continue.

I have held my tongue on this channel for a while, as I just wanted to not talk and just take in what you've been sharing. Your videos are absolutely unrivaled as far as telling the post story of Zeppelin. If anyone is the guy to do the Zeppelin documentary some day, it should be you. Undoubtedly. I feel it should be a Ken Burns style series, rather than a two hour synopsis. Much like what you are already doing here, just bigger budgeted and on a full scale. Including the context around the time adds a lot to everything. Love the work man, keep them coming! Your takes are very close to mine on Live Aid, too. I feel really bad for Phil Collins, honestly. He had it all for a short while, but much like with characters like Prince and Michael Jackson, the press and public started to really turn on him. Its most unfortunate that they didn't have the foresight to work with Phil exclusively before the event. They'd have seen that he was more than capable for the job of playing Led Zeppelin tunes if he had had a fair shake. I think he'd have probably played with Zeppelin further afterwards if they had actually rehearsed.

First off, thank you for taking the time to watch these. RU-vid docs have been a new found love for me but i will you i used to write reviews since high school and just enjoyed documenting the process of music consumption and collecting. I was never a kid who was happy with just the songs, i wanted to know EVERYTHING and i always paid attention to elders and their thoughts, i think i am an old soul and these video projects are finally, the place i was looking for to go at my passion for storytelling. I take your compliments with much gratitude and well, hopefully i will work on documentaries like a full time job, would love to do that. I am learning a lot from producing these, getting better at time management and scripts, which i am currently working on new Zepp material btw. Regarding Phil i just think it was disrespectful of Plant to sort of USE COLLINS for his personal benefit and then diss him next to Page, this is btw something i've noticed on Robert, and well, researching into their family lives and childhoods, i have a theory as to why Plant is the way he is. Psychology is fascinating, no one is perfect of course. The extent of Robert's wound as kid....really explains his travellings and drama in the Post Zepp environment. You are right, the way the press took shots at Prince, MJ and Phil....wish the critics could try to write a song and THEN survive the music business filled with SHARKS. No one gets out of the business alive or intact, its HARD man....HARD STUFF. anyway, as a passionate musician, filmmaker and FAN, THANKS!

Thanks for these, they've been great. I still remember being glued to the TV for the Live Aid performance thinking, "Oh my God, I'm about to see Led Zeppelin, I never thought this could happen" while my grandmother was getting after me for sitting too close to the TV (I was 11 yrs old). So these videos have been a "reminiscence" as I was young and gravitating toward bigger, heavier, faster music at the time (soonthereafter I grew up and so did my ears, getting into jazz, fusion, opening up to pop music, etc). I distinctly remember being let down, but it took me a few years of growing up to realize these guys were now into their 30s, and that if you've grown up at all, you simply aren't going to look, sound, or write the way you did when you were 22, 23, 24...particularly when you've almost killed yourself ala Jimmy. If you can ever fully explain how Jimmy never really got it all the way back, I'm all ears. He surely got close during the Firm years (and also later), but I've always found his last Zeppelin years particularly puzzling. His tone seemed to get weaker and weaker, with less and less punch and gain in an era when the gain and distortion available to rock guitarists was growing very rapidly. Obviously, he was wasted as hell from 1977 -1980, but still, he couldn't have been bombed 24 hrs a day after that, right? Plus, as you see in the interviews you featured in this video, he's clearly way healthier and in much better shape. Anyway, thanks again, these "look backs" are fascinating.

Thank you for watching Joel! You are right that one tends to forget their age at the time, even Jazz Fusion players, look at the great Allan Holdsworth and his personal battles and what his own family went thru, even the financial needs after his passing and to realized he made LITTLE money from his career...that one hurts everytime i remember. So Page's decline is strange, as he had great moments in between which makes me think its psychological. He seems to also battle tendonitis and not practicing enough. His personal demons are not an easy road to travel. Jeff Beck and all the other giants didnt have the BURDEN of expectations Jimmy had since what...1971? I am not making excuses, just saying, it's not easy staying on top, look at Michael Jordan, a billionaire and STILL, he has his....moments hehe.

Please share your tribute band stories, as a fellow Zepp tribute guitarist i wanna know your battles, pretty sure we will have common ground. BTW, i've never liked Misty Mountain Hop live, something is missing ALWAYS, the studio compression i mean. The 90s....i will do, but as a Patreon exclusive. Because i need to find balance between my day job, music, and this project, working a 90s series, is a lot to cover, especially the 250+ shows Page and Plant did playing SO MUCH material, i really need to sit down. The bad thing is not having John Paul Jones makes me.."hate" that era a bit you know? So the motivation to do it, is at 50/50, a Patreon project allows us both viewes and myself to benefit from the work. Anyway, hope i didn't sound like a salesman there, i will keep posting videos here on RU-vid but priority 1 will be topics i fully connect with :)

I really enjoyed this episode - it really takes me back to a time when my interest for music was just beginning to blossom and expand - via my own independence, and not just whatever I had heard in ambience growing up. I could go on - and probably will , with another comment on a different episode you’ve posted - but this comment I wanted to address THE FIRM . My god, what great 2 albums those are , IMO. I feel like they are the perfect amalgamation of Led Zeppelin and Bad Company- distinct on the first album , and a bit more “blended” on the second. There’s not a song on either I do not like - least favorite may be ‘Radioactive’ , but even that has such a quirky guitar riff and excellent hook of a chorus. And oddly enough, when I think about it : you are totally correct in mentioning how quickly they packaged their existence within the span of a little over 2 yrs. That project should have been given a little more time to breathe. I could go on and on expressing my thoughts on the songs, Page’s tones and riffs , Paul’s voice , lyrics etc.. But one special memory I have about The Firm is when the first single for the 2nd album came out:All The Kings Horses (early 1986/Winter ) , I was in 8th grade and my dear father came down to visit me and came and got me out of school early , then drove me to Jacksonville Florida (an hr away) and took me to Aqua East (a surf shop - as I was totally into surfing at the time) - he ordered a custom made surfboard for me , of which I would pick up within a couple months. I was lucky enough to show my dad how much I had improved and loved surfing with it ,later that summer , as he watched me from the beach. I say all this with sad reverence, because I eventually lost my dad to suicide about 14yrs later - and I don’t think I’ve EVER been the same since …. I know I haven’t. Anyways- great episode , I look forward to watching everything else you’ve done, so far.

Neat to get such an in depth look at Mean Business. Probably the first time it’s ever been done. That thing sunk without a trace. I liked it. I loved his guitar sounds. Spirit of Love was a near classic. That solo! Wished it could have gone on and on. Would like to hear more about the exact sequence of their dissolution. I remember Page reportedly saying something like “at age 40 you don’t sign more than a two year deal.” I always thought that was all there was to it. It was developed as a short term project and nothing more. But always wondered if there was sone kind of sequence of events or how it went down. Rodgers to me in retrospect just didn’t do enough to elevate it. Such an incredible singer but to me it was almost like “we can’t possibly fulfill expectations so let’s not really even try that hard.” I could be way off on that assertion. Maybe he did give it his all and his time had passed or the chemistry just wasn’t all there?

@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories Год назад
Yes i believe there has to be more it but the market itself was insanely competitive, i don't see a major label pushing too hard for this. If we look at the classic rock bands that kept going thru the 80s...most had to wait for the 90s revival and the 70s audience growing up/jobs/mortgages to get that bucks again :) Paul Rodgers' career was not in a good place either. Classic rock was a weird label in the 80s. Even the Stones waited till 1989 to think about a comeback with neither Jagger nor Richards able to go by themselves and really make it.

@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories This is 30 years later. I wish I had better things to say about it. The material was weak, there was no stage show, just early lasers. Zep, as strong as the players were , were stronger than each member individually. The Firm had amazing players but in my opinion never wrote a GREAT song. Live in Peace was really the only thing that blew me away. I liked the radio stuff. All the King's Horses, and Radioactive. It just seemed like the band didn't gel. I've been a pro musician most of my life and some bands just don't reach their potential. I think the Firm realized this which is why they broke up, due to lack of interest. I'm still a fan of all the members and their past and current bands.

And I believe this failed reunion is why Plant NEVER went back. He tried, and it fell apart. You cant go back...we can all only go forward. This I think is really the "tragedy" of Page. After a point, He has simply refused to move forward. Only repackaging the past. Granted... it makes him tons of money, but its like if Da Vinci stopped after the Mona Lisa, never painted again, and only sold copies of that for the rest of his life..."Look this one has more RED in it." Buy it now. Again and again and again and again.

About Free To Live…. I think I may know of the song that’s been escaping you but can’t put a finger on it. I think the song you’re thinking of is: Live for the Music by none other than Bad Company off of Running With The Pack. Especially Mick’s guitar solo during it….is a bit reminiscent of this opening riff of this Firm classic. (Victim Of Love by Eagles comes to mind too.) Let me know Jose, if I’ve hit the nail on the head. Of course I’d like to add that, this seemingly never-ending video series is just wonderful. Love this episode, thanks. I especially appreciate your coverage of The Firm, which to my ears is Jimmy's best work in the post Zeppelin period- apart from the Page Plant project. Yes Jean, Jimmy's tone in Mean Business was great. He came back to life, i read that allegedly he kicked off his habits fully in 1986, i can't put this on the video because it's gossip and i respect their private lives BUT it does make sense when you hear the music and the shows. Coverdale Page was interesting, i would love to make a video on it in the future, you see the 90s are weird, cause they carbon copied many of their 80s schedules and agendas plus the Page Plant revival pretty consumed the entire decade so, it's not my favorite period but i do need to sit down and think about the right angle to view it from. Coverdale Page has one of the best Post Zepp tracks Jimmy ever did which is Shake my Tree :) Thank you very much for tuning in, there's more stuff coming!

I look forward to hearing about 1988 when Plant and Page both came to their senses and started including Zep material in their separate endeavors. Page on his outrider tour and Robert on Now and Zen. Both were excellent, I was able to see each tour twice and had the honor of seeing what I believe was the very first US date of Now and Zen in Rochester NY, with SRV opening! Out of all the concerts I've seen, that show will always be the greatest. SRV fuckin killed. Smoked. Unbelievable. Me and my buddy who were both the biggest Zep fans in our town were like no way will Plant top that during our set break commentary to each other, my semiconscious girlfriend, and the random people crawling over, under and around us. But we were very wrong Robert and his band did!!! They were out for blood. Every song was incredible. The general admission on the floor was a continuous sea of people almost moshing..lol. The first zep tune they did was "in the evening" and they sort of tricked people because the beginning wasn't the middle eastern type stuff we're all familiar with, there was just a bunch of Hendrix style guitar feedback for a minute and as soon as Robert went. "In the-aaa..." The place went fuckin insane..lol. One of the best memories of my life. And they did the proper guitar solo from the album (unlike zep... during the second half...quiet part), I remember the lights went dark kinda and these disco balls were throwing all the little circles all over the whole audience. My girlfriend at the time indulged too much on preshow drinks and party favors and was half unconscious for the whole night but I held her up for the whole time with one arm, while fighting my way towards the front with the other. I remember every so often she would complain and ask me to stop jumping up and down so much....lol. ah, to be young, in love, and completely possessed by rock and roll!!. Thanks for another great one, JCM. By the way is your full name JCM 800, or JCM 900? Lol. I loved my JCM 900 100w dual reverb back in the day. Keep on rockin, brother. Edit: well turns out a part of my core memories that makes me the man I am today was incorrect 🙁. It was the second US date I saw, the first was in Ohio!! (I guess that's equally as strange a place as Rochester NY to kick off your big US tour, right?), Then they jetted up to Toronto Canada for one show, then the Rochester show on May 11, 1988. We also saw him at the end of that summer in Saratoga Springs, NY (without Stevie) but that one was not as good, they all sounded tired or something as I remember it. Like I said, I also saw Jimmy twice on his Outrider tour that 88-89 winter. Both shows were awesome. Jason Bonham was on the kit. I forget the singers name but he sang on or two of the non instrumentals from the album. The bassist may have been Tony Franklin but I'm not sure. Outrider was, or is, a great album, btw, from start to finish. I'm sure you're planning on raving about it when you get that timeframe in a later video as you have well proven yourself to be a person with great taste in music..lol.

As i went thru Plant's 1988 shows, saw a lot of them for my research, i know the exact moment you described here, In The Evening had me jumping off my seat as you know i am obsessed with LZ's ITTOD. I really wish the band played this at the 2007 reunion. Back to 88, absolutely, Plant's band was ON FIRE, it's no wonder he became SO POPULAR and decided to employe the marketing machine at full speed. Doug Boyle man, what a guitar player, for the 1988 stuff though, i don't feel he could recreate Robbie Blunt's stuff with care, but the rest, he was a monster. Charlie Jones was awesome, so lucky Plant found ANOTHER JONES bass player to count on hehe. Phil Johnstone was no virtuoso BUT, he was a GREAT producer and kept it together, Chris Blackwell could do it all, his drumming and multi-iinstrumentalist ways were top notch. Robert outdoing SRV says a lot, SRV was a one of a kind player. BTW, my name is JCM, no Marshall model haha. Its just the initials for my name anyway, then i thought, oh yes, it sounds like the AMP! The 1988 part of the series had me taking deep breaths on to how to cover the material, so much going on i wrote an outline and drew some storyline ideas, this is how i make these, i take my time and probably my girlfriends hates me at this point LOL. I don't have any real financial means to help support your work so that's why I take the time to comment and of course mention your work to the few zep fans I've run into outside of cyber space. Sorry about being wrong about your initials but yeah, JCM 800 is the classic, highly revered marshall head responsible for just about every well loved metal guitar tone, as you probably know. Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Randy Rhoads, on and on. I had the JCM 900 in my clubbing days which had even more gain. But back to 88- I can imagine there is so much for you to sort out. I'm really looking forward to it. I don't think I ever knew why they both decided to perform Zep material again in the same year. Of course 'tall cool one's blew up on the radio in a big way with the custard pie, black dog, and whole lotta love samples. Boy, I can still remember being so blown away and amazed by that song when I heard it. And every time really. It was like zep was in the air, in a current way. We were all excited. Back then, every one in my life loved led zeppelin. That concert was so amazing (the Rochester show). I agree with you about plants band, but Robbie wasn't there? That I don't recall. He was on the album though, well I'm sure your episode will explain. In the evening was the first zep song, then I think black country woman, which was a huge surprise. I remember going to the show and I really wanted to hear trampled underfoot and when they did black country woman, I was happy of course but I remember thinking there's no way they will play "trampled" because they already did a physical graffiti song, but then.... they did play it!!! I'm sure I jumped up and down quite a bit for that one and shook the hell out of my poor nauseous light weight girlfriend...haha. I probably held her up over my head for that one and tried to make her dance and stuff. Ha. I'll always remember her too, the first great love of my life, and it's a short list. Plant played 5 zep tunes, I think the others we Misty mountain hop, and I can't remember the 5th. I seem to remember that the second show was the same setlist with maybe one different zep tune. Rock on everyone.

Love that yor focusing on The Firm. I don't listen to the records enough. Free to Live definitely has an Eagles feel to it but I actually hear a bit of riff the Monkey's used or maybe it's just me. John i recommend checking out THE FIRM's 1986 bootlegs, they are exciting and worth taking the time to listen. At first i thought, oh well, it's just more of the same 1984-1985 stuff, but i was surprised. Jimmy played great but Paul Rodgers came back to life, he has THE VOICE but when he is in autopilot man..it's hard to get into. I like BAD COMPANY's ROUGH DIAMONDS album a lot for some reason.

As always impressive deep dive into the mysterious afterlife of Led Zeppelin. With Page even knowing The Firm wasn't getting airplay in the US is akin to understanding a failure. As a kid from the 80's Led Zep was seen as that band from the 70's who just stopped playing when the drummer died. And we understood why after Live Aid in 85. I remember Plant's solo works being played on the radio and video clips on music shows but never Jimmy's projects. This continued through the 90's as well. Weird how Plant & Page shunned the incredible Led Zep catalogue for so long. Almost as if they were ashamed of their incredible rock music heritage. Maybe because it made them feel like the 'old guys' in what is a fresh music market. It took Jimmy too long his best option was to do a solo album that connects up with Led Zep DNA and American marketplace in a few years yet. It seemed to end a 10 year romp in the musical wilderness for Page.

Forget that the best drummer at the time and rock and roll or ever was John Bonham he was a driving force AB Led Zeppelin they all said that the heart of the band was gone that's more why they didn't want to play the songs he wasn't there Robert's best friend that was the reason
@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories

You know, GRUNGE had to happen for these guys to have the right platform in the media to really come back musically if you know what i mean. The 80s were HARD on classic rockers. Interesting you say Jimmy never got airplay, you know this makes my theory on the "curse", valid, as it seems Robert kept getting more popular, but at what price.....i will just leave it at that. These episodes are clearly such a labor of love, and full of interesting facts and stories. Tho I must admit, I have no affinity for any of "The Firms" stuff. At all. No offense intended. It seems good "in theory" but for me it was all a huge mis-fire. It was good in that it got Page to do "something." And more than likely, without exaggeration Paul Rogers probably saved Jimmy's life by collaborating with him and giving him some motivation to move forward.

@@JCM-LedZeppelin-Stories Thanks. As I have a great respect for your playing, and devotion to your history, I appreciate the honest communication as well. I bought those Firm albums when they were first released, and man, I tried, I tried so hard to "like it", but I simply could not. I had fairly eclectic taste in 1984, and with great albums by Prince, Van Halen, SRV, Hall & Oates, Run DMC, et all, and, I was just getting into vintage jazz guitarists then; Wes, Kenny Burrell, Barney Kessell, Joe Pass. With all that it just didnt stack up. I think I said before tho..dont get me wrong, Page was THE reason I started electric guitar. "Heartbreaker" changed my life. I think ultimately, (for me) Page is one of those artists that requires the exact right partner to collaborate with. Plant was THE guy. They each had what the other didnt. In a way like Jagger & Richards. Together: Magic. Apart? Very hit & miss. Thanks again for all the great content!

Same goes for Paul Rodgers. Best thing he did post-Bad Co. Jimmy Page and the band opened up Paul Rodger musically to areas he NEVER explored prior. For example, Double Kick drum "Fortune Hunter", Epic 9 min songs with unusual chord changes "Midnight Moonlight". Time signature changes "Midnight Moonlight/Dreams". Key modulation "Free To Live"(The 1st chorus is in E, 2nd/3rd moves to A).... THE FIRM opened up Paul Rodgers from the normal "3 chord, straight forward bar band rock" of Free and Bad Company.... None of his music has been as creative since. WHY the hell did they stop this band??? So Jimmy Page could make Outrider??? Really?
