Tommy has had zero emotional growth the entire series and while him having a self respect when it comes to his personal sex life is good, refusing to discuss his future plans with his partner, refusing to even pay attention during the elimination, and being too lazy to set up the date properly shows that he isn't willing to grow or change because he thinks he has it all figured out. I will agree that him not giving the content the producers wanted is probably part of it, but it wasn't because he had self respect. It was because he was too lazy to even bother trying.

Nah, I feel like their relationship was pretty decent and Tommy's gf just wanted him to get a better job. Honestly, he just seems like a normal dude down on his luck to me. One of the reasons the tools were brought on was because of the way the treated their significant others and he never really put in alot of effort when it came to getting a job(which was important to her...which means it was important to the relationship) or their relationship. Effort was the thing he was the primary reason he was there. He was called the slacker too at the beginning and him and his girlfriend deflected when ever there was criticism and never really let it sink in. He went home because of the overall lack of effort compared to the rest of the guys(who yes had far more work to do from the beginning) but from what you we can tell we're growing and giving it their best. His primary reason for being there was the one thing he never addressed or try to fix. I was rooting for him at the beginning of the show too because he seemed the most sane and loyal(even if the bar was on the floor🤣) but I also can identify he didn't change all that much from the beginning of the show. A little bit yes but not as much as far on treatment to his significant other and his over character pretty much stayed the same.

That scene with Tommy and Krista came up while I was reading. The editing on it was really confusing, I don't know what facial reaction went to what cuz you can see the blanket she had kept disappearing and reappearing which means they edited it out of order for the best effect. Hard to pass that off when something as obvious as a blanket is houdini-ing between cuts.

But, his actual reaction at the end didn’t seem to be edited and it very much was the wrong thing to say. I mean, as fun as this is to analyze, it’s just a dumb reality show that is very likely mostly faked. Honestly, I feel like it’s more likely that they decided to leave and planned this as a way out. That's not at all what happened. From my understanding, Matsu was accusing Tommy of not being invested in the process. They hyper-focused on the sex therapy in this episode but his lack of engagement and clear inability to recognize how his girlfriend felt about things were an ongoing issue. They may have agreed on the sex issue in this episode but it goes beyond that. The therapist wasn't praising Matsu for getting hammered and instigating, she directly chastised that and backed up Tommy's regression point. Next, she said to TOMMY "But you weren't wrong in your accusation," meaning he wasn't wrong in thinking that Tommy wasn't fully invested. It was a Segway into why he was eliminated: Not because he didn't fight, but his lack of interest and empathy as an ongoing issue. His apathetic attitude towards his crying girlfriend at the end backs up that he can't take into account how his girlfriend feels about things, which is why she broke up with him. He definitely wasn't the most imperfect person in the room, but him being on the show clearly wasn't going anywhere - both from a producer's viewpoint and from the viewpoint of the proposed "goal" of the show: to improve. I suspect his girlfriend already suspected he wasn't taking instruction, wasn't serious about his future, and was apathetic towards the whole thing and her feelings despite it visibly meaning a lot to her. You and Gunnar are focusing too much on the sex therapy and not the bigger context.

I did a field observation for my engineering job last year, it was 2 weeks of just watching them pump grout into a sinkhole. Lasted way longer than my boss thought, and I had to do slump tests as well.

Actually he was with Ida for six years. The other girl was only with him for like several weeks.

He got booted for not producing enough watchable content in the final weeks of the show. He got dumped for a long-running (possibly depressive) apathy his girlfriend clearly needed him to work through. I don't think this was a healthy way to pursue that, but fuck $100k is $100k, especially in '09. I think Tool Academy was a poorly thought out reality show to begin with, given its central premise should lead to a de-escalation of tension and excitement as time goes on, which isn't really what you want in TV.

He said he'd look for a job though. Do you expect him to suddenly know exactly what job to get just because he's been on a reality show
