Two down and one more to go! Now I've gotta get working on the paludarium for my African Bullfrog Samson. That one is going to be really neat so stay tuned. I've got a ton of other cool builds lined up for 2019, so stay tuned. Let me know what you thought about this build? 🗨️ 👇
You'll love it man! Frogs are so fun. I used to do 100% monthly changes, but with a setup like this, 50% weekly to biweekly changes should be sufficient.
Was expecting you watching his Videos, AC ;D. You two brought me into the whole nature thing again, thank you for that. Its important, especially today, that people get in touch with our mother nature again.
Love your tank!! I've been freshwater fish most of my life. And I had a salt tank and turtles. Lol. Now I have a baby bulldog in my 55-gallon. The whole house loves him. Lol. When he begs for food. Lol. Mine likes to go at my hand when I move my plants 🤣. I just love their Personality. Your right. Bullfrogs are not good pets. they need lots of care. they can bite lol.
This is really cool. My odd pet of choice has been snapping turtles. They are so powerful, destructive and messy that no matter what you do THEY decide what the tank will look like lol
I attempted to use that fluorite substrate one time...never again. I couldn't clean it no mater how many times I rinsed it, it was a huge disaster. Nice froggy tank!
This is a beautiful set up but there needs to be a better land area for semi aquatic frogs and a uvb light. I have a green frog that likes to burrow on my land portion in the dirt. Do you have another set up that is half land, half water?
Hey, Serpa! Do you think you can give me any ideas on some terrarium designs? I'm doing a leopard gecko tank, a small firebelly toad tank, my hissing cockroaches, my hadrurus arizonensis scorpion, and my pac man frog. I was just wondering if you have any naturalistic inspiration for any of these.
I frog gig all the time and thinking of trying to catch a female by hand to keep in a fish tank. (Obviously I’d only take a small one out of the wild unless I was to eat it)
Haha! It takes time an patience, but I know you can do the same! I've just been making these for a long time and I have an extensive background in fine arts.
That's the only downside I've found to seachem flourite is it is so darn cloudy and takes 45 minutes of rinsing before it's even remotely clean. Still a beautiful substrate though
Fluorite is the WORST! Rinsing it would have only helped minimally, fyi. Lol, I rinsed mine six times and the tank I set up with it still has periodic cloudiness issues if I disturb the cap. It’s clay-based, so that sediment will settle, but it’s messy stuff. Love the plant growth though, so you can’t go wrong, but yeah, the cloudiness was not your fault!
I have this in my freshwater planted 20gal and man, every time I go to to maintenance on the plants or add/change something out the water always gets cloudy. All my root plants really seem to like it though so i guess its worth it. I also dont have a cap on part of it too which is probably contributing to the issue, but I like the natural looks that it gives.
@@SerpaDesign thats part of learning... i think lots of pet owners have "regrets"- you seem very thorough and caring and loving towards your pets tho- they sure already forgave your small mistakes
He is so cute. I would love to raise one from a tadpole but I never see the giant bullfrog tadpoles anymore. They were in every shop years ago for a couple bucks. As soon as I saw you pouring the fluorite straight from the bag I was like .....no he's not... xD it's my favorite substrate. It looks so beautiful and natural underwater. But honestly I don't believe it ever becomes dust free, because whenever it rubs against itself, it just creates more clay sediment. Such a delicate, beautiful substrate that roots seem to love but not the best for sifters and destroyers :P awesome video as always!
I have all my turtles on a thin layer of sand. The poop stays on top op it untill it ends up in the filter. And the turtles turn the sand up side down every day. So it stays clean and they can do their natural behaviour 👍
Watching frogs grow from tadpole is so rewarding! I know they're hardly the same but I have African dwarf frogs and they bred once. I loooooved watching those little babies swim around the top of the water among my duckweed, sprouting legs over time. 💚💚💚
Hey Tanner :) Another gorgeous build. And thank you for the words of wisdom regarding the difficulties keeping bullfrogs and your instruction to leave the wild animals where they are. No animal should be taken from the wild into a life of captivity, unless they have physical or health issues that require constant care, most especially when captive bred examples are easily available. A quick question re the lights you use - I know you've said before they are shop lights and you pick them up in your local DIY or bargain store. For those of us not in the US, could you find something similar online and post a link for it? That way, I (and others!) would know exactly what to look for where we live. Would be much appreciated - your plants always grow so well and specialist lighting can be prohibitively expensive, especially for larger enclosures. Thanks so much, and again, big love from Scotland :)
I think there is a time and place of wild caught animals, but I'm not trying to promote that kind of behavior, especially for something like a bullfrog. When choosing lights, just look at the specs. The ones that I've been using lately are 3200 Lumen @ 5000k. They also only use 30w, but that doesn't matter. You mainly want something that's bright (I'll say 800+ Lumen) that seems to be what's worked well for me and something that's in the 5000-6500k range. I prefer 5000, but that's preference.
Touchy subject considering animals that are sold in pet stores are typically bred in deplorable conditions. My bullfrog I have because I found him on a run and he had only one good eye. I felt his chances of survival were not good. I took him home hoping to see if his eye would heal in time. Despite medication the eye didn’t change and I still have him. I don’t think it is great for people to go catch frogs and take them home but there are worse things than that that people do to wildlife (coming from a wildlife rehabilitator’s perspective). Especially if they devote any amount of time trying to properly care for them.
@@3qazlauren as I said, if an animal requires assistance to live a good life, then taking them from the wild is acceptable (for some creatures). I would never buy an animal from a pet store either - all my animals are rescues. it is possible to have animal companions and still be ethical!
Man, you literally have the best pet channel on RU-vid. So many animal keepers on here are just in it for the glory and don't really care about the animals that they keep , or ensuring that their enclosures are the best that they can be. You clearly know your stuff and are putting all of that knowledge to great use. Good job. Always a pleasure to watch your new videos because I always know that I'll learn something new!
@@chadbellbowa7525 what a filter, tank, plants, multiple substrates, bog wood, stone, heater, food, mudskippers would come to less than $200 would it? And having to feed them and clean them out on top of every other tank he has set up is easy is it? And would you go out and buy all that, spend at least an entire day putting it together, and care for them for years for no other reason than the fact someone on the Internet told them to?
Joe White you don’t need a big tank you only use one or a later pair their not expensive I have a pair I watch flop around and dig all I got was mangroves and fake plants it’s not a rare fish....... trash
I say this with love This guy: Making an aquarium to house and care for a bullfrog Me in the East Pecan Valley Swamp of San Antonio: *Looking at dozens of bullfrogs in my flooded front yard*
Important question. My 4 yr old son caught a small Bullfrog {2"}. He loves all creatures like I do so we bought a large tank and set it up almost exactly like yours. But I'm not sure if the frog is eating? We give him crickets only and they hide up in the bushes and plants so it's hard to know how much he's eating. Pet store recommended getting these little orange feeder fish? Can be eat this? And what else can be be fed? I've tried nightcrawlers but they just drown. And I know your not supposed to keep wild creatures, but we've been doing it awhile and we usually let them go after a month or two when he catches something else. So please don't hate....
Some lobelia cardinalis would be awesome in a paludarium. It can grow completely submerged and it's a very nice green color, but when it grow emersed the leaves turn purple and it blooms crimson red flowers.
My daughter found 2 bullfrog tadpole and we have been raising them every since. We love watching them grow it IS very rewarding. However with your educated disclaimer of 16yrs of keeping a clean tank for a finicky eater we appreciate your advise not to keep for a lifetime. We will chalk this up to experience and education and move on with catch and release! Thank you so much for the video and guidance. It's one of the best so far.
This looks really nice! My mom found an American toad in the basement while she was cleaning the floor, I live in Pennsylvania too and it was in the 30s so I was surprised! Also do you recommend fluval start for a planted aquarium?
Actually I like the look of the murky water look. Feels natural like the swampy conditions I'm use to seeing them in in the wild. Have you ever tried to keep a cedar water tank?
I don't think I want to add fish in case I have to do large water changes. Plus I have a feeling that if the swam up to him or nipped him he'd go nuts. He's a very finicky animal and I think it would be in his best interest not to have any.
Amazing frog tank setup, I have a question, Soon I am going to make a 10G long tank for single betta fish. Is 10G also suitable to keep frog. If so which frog will go with a betta.
It’s so humbling to see how much you truly care about your animals. What does MJ stand for btw- sorry if I missed it on a prior vid! Great build.. love it!
Great enclosure as usual.... love your designs... you always have what's best for the critter in mind, not just what looks good. I had no idea bullfrogs could live so long!!! Here's to many more years together for you and MJ!! 💖💖💖
i have a really neat idea, i havent seen any of your videos showcasing a crayfish/crawfish and they require a specific environment, i think it would be a great opportunity for you to capitalize on !! just a thought keep up the great work !
I really like your video wonderful setup! Good thing it's a male because the females get very big. Your frog looks quite big for a male. I am happy you issued the disclaimer because even for advanced frog keepers they are difficult! I am more of a native species channel and I couldn't pass up seeing a bullfrog build! If you ever get the chance to checkout my channel you might enjoy seeing some other native amphibians and some exotics.
Great build Tanner, and loved how you were honest about keeping them as a species, not discouraging, just honest about the challenges involved (and also the rewards). Looking forward to the next video!
Love your setup! That's one lucky bullfrog! I'm currently raising two American bullfrog tadpoles that I purchased from a farm and garden supply store. Do you think a 55 gallon aquarium would provide sufficient space for a pair?
Ever since I've started watching your videos I've gained lots of inspiration, hopefully later this year I can finally make a bioactive vivarium for my gargoyle gecko.
