Picking two bi-racial ppl to play both main roles was insulting and I'm light skinned. Making him bi-racial, I get it pointing out that even passable bi-racial ppl are still looked at as Black but the love interest should have been dark skin. Among other things that went wrong with this
Imagine if they had a movie about a secret society of African Americans that had magical powers and they had to save the world, and that's it, nothing about race or politics or anything, just fun escapism with an A.A. cast. You'd never see that though because anything with A.A. people in it has to have some racial/socio-political undertow to it, which is sad. It's like Blacksploitation all over again, just without the fun this time.
I saw this film at Sundance and the white people loved it and raved about it and black people walked out angry so I don’t know who he did this for maybe it’s for white women
No lie, I actually went in and saw this movie, watched for exactly 35 min. Stood up, walked out, I will never get that money or time back, I mean "bad" is being kind to describe this...whatever this is
Excellent review as usual. I especially liked your commentary at the beginning “How harmful the magical Negro is”. It reminds me of how Black women are looked upon as soooooo strong , as if we don’t feel physically/mental pain, or we don’t bleed, and that’s partly why we get subpar medical care.
Give the script to Boots Riley and you would have gotten cutting satire that would have some good laughs. From the previews it looked like it was afraid to step on toes.
This movie wasted over an hour of my time that I will NEVER get back. I believe I laughed 2x. The movie was dry and thoughtless. I get what they tried to do with the message but it was done so unsuccessfully. I was shocked to find out this thing was in an actual movie theater😢😢
Will SMITH.... Aladdin😂. It had to be a real interesting process to have white & black writers in the room, or being pitched the idea of this foolery. Not ever would I spend a single piece of a penny on watching this... THING
I have a feeling that this isn't the movie they started out making. It has white movie executive panic written all over it. I was so hopeful about this movie when I saw the first trailer, but the full trailer dashed all those hopes. I will say this, I'd watch it if it was on Netflix.
This movie was terrible, and we've been duped! There were too many thoughts that never took shape for this movie to be anything good. They did a horrible job conveying anything positive about showing this crazy aspect to make it interesting. They sprinkled too many items into the pot and went way left! I feel that there was absolutely no believability in the relationships. It ended up being simply information that you have to decide if it's any a necessary film. I'm bothered that this film was funded because too many people approved this item to not send it straight video. IT WAS A BUNCH OF NOTHING! I hope no one honestly says this is another version of American Fiction because lort it's not. I'm going 3/10. It was Cliff's Notes of Cliff's Notes of some random script. My guy, I appreciate your hard work on your reviews. Keep up the great work! 🤟🏿 😁👍🏿
I really liked the idea of having a movie focused around black people practicing magic. Annoyed at this plot of using magic solely to make white people happy. The concept had potential and David Allen Grier wasn’t used to his full potential.
Also heard this movie is projected to not do well. Where are all my rom-com fatigue people at. Oh right that doesn’t exist either just like superhero fatigue.
I almost walked out this movie. The romantic scenes were so boring. Of course the two black witch leads were masculine looking. One bald the other heavy set. I wanted to see some crazy beautiful powerful black women but of course not. Of course not a black love story. It was terrible.
I’m Mexican America and ain’t watching this at all. Too much about race and im just over it honestly. I just want to watch a dam good movie without making me feel some type of way about it
I believe that the title was meant to be satirical. I'm going to watch it tonight. The latter part of this review could have come first. I just clicked on this because I had never heard of the movie. This is why I don't let reviews color the wish to see a film. Come on, it's a RomCom.
I just watched it and I instantly searched for reviews lol. Glad I found your channel because you put words to exactly what I was thinking. I love sci Fi and find it difficult to find any that stars black people. I end up watching mostly white characters just to get the entertainment I like. I had really I high hopes for this but ultimately wish I just kept scrolling.
This movie was a "Hot Mess"! And I couldn't wait for it to come out. Almost perfectly cast, but the script and the director destroyed this movie. They should have gone in the direction of it being a romantic comedy. Because I don't believe that the majority of people going to the movies are there to be educated or preached to. I go solely for entertainment, unless you state ahead of time that it's going to be a documentary.🤨
I just watched the movie and I kind of liked it. You have to go in to it thinking of it as a satirical over exaggerated comedy to get what they were going for. Some of the joke have a lot of nuance to it that some may miss like one part where David Griers character is explaining why they do it and the danger of white people that are uncomfortable and goes on to say "I don't blame white people for that i blame their discomfort" that line is poking fun of the the "I don't blame black people i blame their culture" phrase. *Spoiler alert* the ending was confusing and it makes me wonder was she their for white guy comfort or was she their for Justin Smith's characters comfort because he was this socially awkward person and his relationship with her gave him the strength to finally speak up for himself.
2:20 well, stereotypes are fundamentally some kind of end of the spectrum trope, but the question is, who cares. You say this had good intention. How? By making this stereotype popular in a cute comedy franchise that hopefully spawns a series or whatever? What good could possibly come out of this, especially in the current climate where you're either a white savior or a colonialist/oppressor. Are you telling me tehre are no BP in "equal" roles. Not to mention, it's not WP who created and promotes the whole gansta image. Like, what do you want "white people" to think, like they're some kind of hivemind. I mean this alone is insane to me. Some writer or director decides to make Morgan Freeman into god, and now, the collective race of WP are reinforcing stereotypes...
It seems to me that racism is a spectrum on which the majority of people in the US don't really move much during their lifetimes, because there is no motivation for most people to become aware of their racism and then to try to be less racist. So it follows that whether a movie like this is for white people or not is kind of a moot point, because most of them are comfortable at a point on the racism spectrum where they just keep scrolling when they see that there are multiple POC in the movie, out of animus toward POC if they're on the more racist end of the spectrum, or out of lack of familiarity with POC so they think that there will probably be a bunch of cultural references in the movie that they're not going to get. I'm one of the white people who has moved a bit on the racism spectrum during my lifetime. Growing up I was immersed in racism, and all that that implies (I was a total f@cking idiot who certainly inspired more than one POC to have violent thoughts, or just to dislike me intensely), and then I gradually moved to the point on the spectrum where I was aware of my racism and ashamed of it but I had no clue how to stop my racism from doing damage, and during those phases in my life I was one of the people who avoided movies with multiple POC. Now I'm a bit further along on the spectrum, so the ratio of POC to white actors in TV shows and movies isn't really a thing for me anymore, so I've lost count of the POC-heavy shows and movies I've watched, when I used to be able to count them on one hand not that long ago. I agree with E-Man's review that this movie isn't really that great or helpful, but I think the mere existence of this movie is a little bit helpful, because increasing the number of majority-POC cast movies and shows that white people see when we're trying to find something to watch normalizes the appearance of POC on screens and greatly increases the instances of white people who are stationary on the racism spectrum to stop overthinking it and select shows and movies with POC, and actually get the messages that we really need to get, and start moving in the right direction on the racism spectrum. I know I'm probably still laughably basic and facile, but try not to roll your eyes too hard. I'm really just trying not to be part of the problem.
In thinking on this movie a little further…even bad reviews is good for the writer and producer of this crappy movie. His name will get out there and he will obviously go on to do other movies and shows. Any publicity is good publicity😢
So black people learn how to use magical powers and out of all the things they can do with it they made it about dedicating their lives to make whyt people happy. What an insult, this couldn’t have been the original storyline
I haven’t watched this movie but just from your commentary I’m wondering if the romance part was for the purpose of having a white main character for white audiences to feel seen. Like her character sends the message of “not all white people”, for white audiences to not feel ganged up on? Since it feels so out of place
You being nice. This was simply funny and unentertaining. I went in loving David Allen and support everything he does. I'm black and took my wife and it turned into a rom-com and I thought well maybe she would like that aspect and nope. Man I wanted to like this and it had potential.
I didnt get the crouch grab scene? I dont kno any black people folks who's done that nor have a ever heard of anyone doing that to calm someone down???
i started to watch this movie. knew it had some not so great reviews. watched your review and learned about the magical black people" term. returned to the movie expecting humor around that. and i actually enjoyed the movie. MAYBE its because im white and the movie was made by magical black people to make white people happy? or maybe its just wasnt what people expected so theyre upset about that and dislike the movie. either way i honestly enjoyed the movie
I thought I wanted to see this Movie, I had not seen any trailers for this Movie, I try not to watch trailers and that’s very hard these days the reason is I want to be surprised and entertained when I go see a movie so I usually try to go in blind and ignorant of the premise or subject please forgive my description in not trying to be insulting I truly go to the movies for the experience isn’t that what it’s suppose to be about when you go to a movie any way, when I herd the title I thought the same as you this was gonna be Harry Potter super hero type story. I went to the theatre to see Love Lying and Bleeding which was something I saw out of the blue I new nothing about and was pleasantly surprised it was weird as hell it was good and crazy and strange, I go back to the kiosks to get tickets and the movie was not playing in my neighborhood theater and I was like why they just said it’s not playing here then I happen to see a clip on the premise of the movie where here to help make white people feel comfortable or some bullshit and I was ahhh hell no I don’t want to see this mess. What is wrong with Hollywood constantly trying to denigrate and humiliate black people with these horrific depictions and terrible story lines and premises , this new Good times re-launch crap , to having Black men dress up in dresses, Breaking up T’Challa and Ororo , there making Katt Williams seem so truthful, not all money is good money, I don’t often do wishes I believe in hard work to achieve one’s goals, but in this case I’m gonna make one I wish these guys would go this is bullshit and a terrible idea I don’t want any part in this but I guess that’s is wishful thinking.
It's about Us being empathetic towards white fragility. brainwashing us to not retaliate..HORRIBLE MOVIE. I was expecting maybe a Lovecraft type plot. Nope !
I'm a 54 year old black man and i thought this movie was weak BUT I had to watch sooo many movies about the Nazis winning WW2, i'm kinda glad they made this one.
Brah, please explain how you watched the same trailers I did and you decided, YUP I need to review this for my peeps. Dude E-Fam has zero interest in watching that trash.
2) the black magical character every one keeps explaining is the side character. The side character or the supporting character is supposed to do what you guys are saying that’s so called bad. Support the main character to push the story. The funny thing is you can find that in majority of any movie made even with an all white cast so I don’t get it.
"The American Society of Magical Negroes is.... we have 'GET OUT' at home" haha you are very witty sir! That reminded me when I was a child and I would ask my parents if we could go out for pizza and they would reply with "We have pizza at home" :)
Tell me. How can you say nobody cares about that Character when so many people was brought to tears when John coffee was killed in the Green Mile ?? Someone please answer this for me
I have no interest in seeing these garbage woke indoctrinated movies by hollywood whackjobs, it’s one reason why I don’t go to the movies anymore, I stick to old movies
Oh helll this is the first I even caught wind of this movie, I’m scared to see why it pissed me people off.. at this point should I even do it? Did Camila Harris make this? 🥹
