The Amplified Bible: How to Use It and How NOT to Use It 

I'm an old retired pastor. You, sir, have an exceptionally good spiritual gift for teaching ... and you've used it well. Stay humble through the years and watch how God blesses you and others through the gift.

I am surprised that in your review of the Message you gave it more props than the AMP which is much more accurate being a word for word translation. I have found the AMP immensely useful and formative to my faith and grown immensely. I have also seen it help with teaching and preaching and bringing clarity where people were confused about the text.

The Amplified Bible is one of my main cross-referencing versions its never my go-to reading version, as I know there is commentary that was not in the original , with that in mind , Its still a useful tool , almost like a study bible in pure text, one that i can have on my phone app, while still recognising its bias And you put it beautifully towards the end "it forces you to ask questions by answering them"... so many things i didnt even give a thought about , now made me think BECAUSE the amplified bible tried to explain them It is dangerous to take the explanations of the amplified at face value... but if they make you ask those questions that you never did , I think that is a brilliant way to use it

I'm 17, and since born in a christian family, am reading the Bible since i was a kid, what I've understood trying different translations is the NKJV, NIV leaves me to doubt, which is sure to find answers through the Holy Spirit, but my ever inquisitive, always questioning, curios mind finds an instant limited understanding/answer in the amp version. ' He was saying to her, “First let the children [of Israel] be fed, for it is not right to take the children’s bread and throw it to the pet dogs (non-Jews).” Mark 7:27 AMP' I couldn't understand what it meant when Jesus said children, dogs, but after reading this here and then the footnote which teaches the difference between the greek kuon and kunarion helped me give an answer to myself, and even some questioning muslims who argued this verse showed Jesus didnt come for the gentiles. Also when it says after only 'begotten son' which the kjv uses, my muslim companions argued as to why it said this, questioning how is God begotten, the AMP uses the word unique in brackets, which opens my mind to an understanding of the greek. I personally feel the Amp version has helped me a lot understand scriptures, even the epistles that were really hard to understand. I found the MSG and the Good news Bible, changing the gravity and the overall meaning sometimes of scriptures, considerably to some extent.

I don't get it. The Amplified Bible is to people who are new to Christianity and/or have English as a second language. It is good that it exists.

Hi Mark! I enjoyed some of what I've been reading from the Amplified version on my Bible app, so I just got a hard copy today. I agree with you on a lot of this; sometimes, it's very helpful, other times, not so much. I really enjoy reading Psalms in this version, because I dont always get what's going on when I read it in my NASB version. I do feel like it deepens the meaning for me at some points, similarly to how some people have told me they feel about KJV (which I don't particularly understand lol). But sometimes, it just feels like their additions are unnecessary. It won't be my every day Bible, but Im excited to have it all the same. ^_^ The goal for me is one in each translation!

I know this is a VERY late reply! I have neglected my quiet time/Bible study for a long time. Then someone gave me a small leather amplified Bible as a present..and I test read a few passages. I was addicted! See, English is not my first language, so I have to focus more on reading ..and the descriptions in brackets really help! I'm also ADD so to have to look at another part of the page at study notes will just distract me, therefore I prefer some "study notes" in brackets. So I'll stick to my amp for a while, although I may also get the ESV study Bible later on (except if you can suggest another study Bible with notes altogether and not at the bottom of the page, or having to jump to other parts of the Bible inbetween reading). The amplified bible is a good companion to other bible versions, which I will cross reference each other. It’s also the easiest to comprehend for the layperson. We have to recognise that any form of translation may not always capture the full meaning of the original text. Even when the same person reads the same passage several times, he/she may have a slightly different understanding each time. The reader should maintain an inquiring mindset regardless of which version he/she is reading, and not form an impression simply based on the version he/she thinks that he/she understood the most.

Sorry man there is hidden meaning in the literal word-for-word translations. This is hidden meaning that is not Artificially made to be there by interpretation but is there in the word and hidden by the approach of trying to translate just one English word for each original word. What about the four words for love that appear in the Bible? They are all translated as love using the translational method you described in the video. And yet there is physical love brotherly love unconditional love and family love are all translated as love in most more literal word-for-word translation which use the method that you have promoted. All this meaning is lost to the reader. When Jesus ask Peter if he unconditionally loved him Peter answered back yes you know I brotherly love you. The important Nuance of that exchange is completely lost with the approach that you have promoted. It is only less literal translations that bring to life this hidden meaning by departing from the method you are promoting. The Amplified Bible does go Whole Hog off into la-la land putting interpretations all over the place but it also very very effectively clarifies in those places where the actual ancient words do justify an extra word or two should be inserted for clarification. So I agree with you when you knock it, but it does accomplish what it says it would in those preface sections that you read. Amplified Bible just needs to be reworked and those parts in brackets or parentheses that really are Justified directly by the text such as the four words for love Need to be marked in some way as being such. Then the rest of the stuff that really is interpretation and commentary should be marked as such. If this were done it would be a fabulous translation but I think I agree with you it does fall short just because they have not clearly delineated what is interpretation and what is actually justified by the text.

I stumbled upon this video about the Amplified, but as soon I heard you talk about the grandmother, I thought I heard what you said before, but this is the first time I heard this, but not the first time I read it hahaha I apparently read your article about the Amplified after a Google search about the Amplified Bible. Keep up the good work!

I love the AMP bible and I do believe it's one of the most misunderstood English translations out there. I wish the AMP had a more clear page in it's Bible that spell out how and how NOT to use this Bible. The brackets are commentary and the one I own (1965 edition) state they are "comments not actually expressed in the immediate original text." So that explains the Exodus verse the grandmother mentioned. I do wish they AMPLIFIED their own use of the word "concealed" in the foreword because reading the foreword and preface, I came to the conclusion that they were trying to shine light on the shrouded and not so visible meanings of keywords that English words fail to capture and provide a more full idea of what the author meant when he chose that keyword. However, not concealed in some sense that other translations have kept hidden on purpose, but because of the limitations of our own English language. Like the Greek example of the word "love" has many different words, but in English we translate all those words and unique meanings still as "love" with no added context. I feel English has dropped that ball on examples like that, and I think that is what the AMP tries to fix. "Believe" or "pisteuo" shows up through the NT way over 100 times, but the AMP doesn't clarify it each time because "to cling to, to rely on, to trust in" doesn't always apply each time "pisteuo" is used, but it does add clearer meaning to the word that our words do obscure by default. It shows up only when a better understanding is needed in key verses. I've come to appreciate that the world believe when used in the context of having faith in Jesus means more that simple intellectual belief. The AMP has demonstrated to me that to believe means something deeper than that, it means to trust, rely and cling to Jesus like I trust and rely on a parachute to operate correctly when I need it. The level of belief I have toward the parachute on the ground is different than my level of belief when I'm in mid-air. I believe in the parachute when all things are good and safe, that's easy, but when circumstances change, and my life is on the line, I will be clinging on to that parachute and the AMP brings out that level of severity when it comes to belief in Jesus, that it's not just simple acknowledgment, but a belief that is based on life or death level of trust. I think that is the goal of the AMP ultimately. Whether is passes or fails at that is one thing, but for me, it has amplified a lot of concepts and words for me. Great video. The Amplified Bible seems to give the impression that a Greek or Hebrew word carries all of it's meanings all the time. But every word in every language has a semantic range; a word only means one of its definitions according to the context.

I like the amplified version alongside my NASB for study . It’s a good tool as you noted . Like any tool it needs to be used properly. I generally treat it as a commentary with a limited thesaurus . It’s not the best thing for general reading although it could have some devotional use . Good video , thank you for your work . Side note I believe some of the updated versions have moved away from the introduction you quoted . Blessings

I am not a scholar or anything. I think I understood what you meant. I like what the amplified bible did with phil 2:5-9, it made sense. these days I like to use the amplfied bible for my daily bible reading

I have a side by side study Bible that displays kjv and amp version together. I love to compare the versions. I've somehow always known without even looking into it that the Amplified was a version that tryed to expand the Biblical meaning by trying to include the Greek and Hebrew. Although some of its wording in some verses, in some respects I think over emphasizes the true meaning of a particular verse. Not all of them mind you , only just very few are in my opinion off base. Thanks for your expertise. PS here's a question: What's the difference between the original version of the Amplified Bible and a classic Amplified Bible? I have found they do not read the same.

Very helpful video here. I use an amplified parallel Bible but I generally only read the amp side when I am unsure of a meaning and then I take the info in parens as what it ‘could possibly mean’. Usually it is confirmation of what I felt it means, but sometimes I do feel it is more like an assumption or commentary and I don’t give that much weight as the true word and then I continue reading and often it is clarified better to me. So I feel like I am using the amp in the right way and therefore (for me) it is helpful most of the time. The key is discernment when something is unclear to me at first. What do “I” feel he is saying or telling us? Then let’s see what amp has to say. With good discernment it is very helpful to have the amp side by side. For those without discernment I suspect it could be misleading sometimes especially if they read just the amp side. It is absolutely helpful for me to have the amp side for reference, but not as a primary understanding. The primary written word plus my discernment will always be my primary. I am usually confident in my understanding but when it is a word I do not know at all I look to several sources to get possible meanings. In the end there are sometimes where I do not know for certain because there are several meanings and who is to define what the author “meant” or “thought” exactly. Luckily, I don’t encounter this indiscernible text too often.

I’m wondering if when the Amplified bible came out it was simply a ASV/RSV bible with a habit of breaking down the text into an understandable teachable moments for bible students. Truly, the amplified Bible I have sits on the shelf, but 38 years ago I just loved it as my everyday bible.

I was baptised at a pentacostal church. I was taught that the Bible to be used should be the kjb and that the Holy spirit will interpet what the passage means to the person seeking the meaning of a passage. This is the omportance of fellowship as well as Bible Study

The amplified Bible is a delight I can’t wait for the YouVersion app to create live links for referenced verses when they do make that apart of there app I shall go over to the amplified classic, eagerly drinking and eating the bread and wine it provides and getting ‘off’ on being able to read more and tie the bible together so so much easier. How many sermons have you heard where the pastor expounded on the “deep” and “rich” meaning of the word “shalom”? I live in a heavily Jewish area in Atlanta. Two synagogues within two miles of my house. Lovely people! I promise. When a Jew tells you “shalom” he’s usually just using a cultural/casually religious equivalent to my native Texas “howdy”. Even in the Bible I kind of doubt that it always meant what our clerical buddies think it meant. That’s what this enjoyable episode reminded me of. 🤗

Your examples of flaws of the AMP are just the same thing you'd get from doing a Bible study, just in condensed form, so I'm not sure what the problem is here. For example, The Bible says that even the demons "believe" in Jesus. Including the additional meanings helps bring out the difference between the way a Christian should believe and the way the demons believe. This meaning may not be "hidden" in the other English translations, but I've talked to multiple Christians _and_ athiests that don't know the difference to know it could be clearer. I'm also confused as to why you mentioned the NIV and NLT when those Bibles do the same thing, except while the AMP includes word for word as well as interpretation, the NIV and NLT is _just_ interpretation.

This video is very helpful. I came here looking for a general opinion of the Amplified Bible after reading a few verses from it in my bible study software. I've had a copy of this bible for many years and have always thought the bracketed portions were being taken from the Hebrew and Greek texts. I may possibly have a copy - either hard copy or in my software - of every bible version there is and I have the hardest time determining which one is best to use for my regular reading. I'll check your other videos now for ideas.

I am one of the few people in my community that actually enjoy reading the preface to Bible translations. When people ask me what the differences are between various translations I always like to refer to the preface to those translations. For example the ESV has a section that mentions theological terms being used in the text instead of rendering their meaning. Words like justification, propitiation, and such. I think this is why I truly enjoy the ESV over other translations because it preserves the theological vernacular very well.

I think the AMP makes a great companion translation, but not as a primary translation

the amplified bible makes the translation easier to read and the meaning behind it and yes that was the reason Moses life was threatened. Satan the constant accuser caused all that drama during the journey. you just cant read between the lines. Its like you cant see like your blind. Just like The Pharisees so knowledgeable and yet so blind to see between the lines of scripture. Alot of people do need those extra words to clearly see understand the meaning of whats being conveyed.

I started reading a King James Version One Year Bible this year. It's published by Tyndale. I got multiple versions of the bible for Christmas, a few for myself, a couple as gifts. One of which is a parallel bible with an NIV, KJV, NASB (1995), AMP (2015). I notice when reading that version, when I start to type writing, I'll sometimes want to use brackets and parentheses. It's silly; as if we're being shown how we can use this way [this type] of talking (communication). As if we are to be aware the AMP is aware of the other versions of the bible. We can have a version we might like best [are most comfortable with], but it's probably good for us to try not to argue about it.

I thought the Amplified Bible was to help those who do not know Hebrew and Greek. So the bracketed portions are study Bible commentary. Good to know the other translations you mentioned are rendering English as close as possible to the Greek and Hebrew. So just disregard the Preface; which makes me wonder why they make the claim; seems they think synonyms make the passage more clear. Why don’t they state that?)

Psalm 90: Wrath/Overflow = ? (torrential fury?) Anger/Nostril = Bluster (hot wind?) Sometimes, equivalents in English can be found that convey the earthiness or other connotations of a word in Hebrew. But sometimes I scratch my head to no avail. When the poetry is talking about the overflowing of God's anger and us being swept away as if in a flood, it seems to me that we HAVE to find a way to convey this parallelism in the English.

I just came across this video, so sorry to be late to the party :-) I am a lay Bible teacher and disciple maker. I do not speak or read either Greek or Hebrew. One way I now use multiple translations I learned from you. I have not used the King James version in over 40 years. I had no idea that this translation communicated number with the use of "you" (being equivalent to y'all) and "ye" as singular. This week we have been studying Colossians chapter 3. By looking back at the King James version I was able to see that in verse 16 Paul is referring to the church collectively as "you" (Let the word of Christ dwell in "you" richly in all wisdom) and in verse 17 he refers to us as individuals (And whatsoever "ye" do in word or deed). You have also helped confirm something I have been saying for years - thereby confirming your high intellect and good taste :-) For some time now I have been teaching my students that the sentence is more important than the word, and the paragraph is more important in the sentence. I believe in the virtue of scholarship, but I think we can get carried away with our little bit of knowledge of the original languages and thinking that our smattering of knowledge qualifies us to “correct” the great work done by men and women who put a lifetime into learning these languages and cultures. Mark, this is so good. Just this week, I got parallel versions of KJV and AMP (2015). At first so excited, but like the Moses very, it was clearly adding commentary. Easy to see many others to. Frankly, I am not sure I would have noticed this with our the KJV right there also. But the real issue, you don't know without really thinking about- is it commentary or some real nuisance of just hard to convey English, which is what I was expecting. ..Eveve as a study bible, you have this lack of really knowing clearly which one. It might just be better to get several study bible that clearly make this distinction. No matter how convent and efficient, it could be as a study bible. Thanks for your insights!

In the last few months since being freed by my conscience to read other translations, this has happened more times than I can tell. But the latest “aha” moment was reading Matthew 11:29. All my life, I’d read from the KJV which tells me “learn of me.” Which my brain understands as “learn about me.” But multiple others translations say “learn FROM me.” This difference opened the door of understanding for me to know that the Christian walk is not just knowledge, but a relationship. There have been countless others that I’m sure as I think about it the next few days, I can come back and add to my comment if time (and memory) allows.

Have you read the beatitudes in the Amplified Bible? Every "Blessed" is given a different amplification, I see no rhyme or reason for the different amplification on each line. It all seems so random. And the use of synonyms seems pointless. Why "eternal (everlasting)"? They mean the same thing.

I see you're using the "classic edition" of the Amplified Bible in this video. I recommend getting the 2015 edition of the Amplified Bible. It's far more superior than the original or classic edition. A lot of the problems have been corrected.

Verse 23 refers to the killing of Pharaohs first born son then verse 24 refers to killing "him" without specifying a name. Referring back to verse 23 the "him" would be Moses son, not Moses and Moses wife does what Moses should have done but didn't and gets rather irate about it. At least that's how I always saw that set of verses. Good points about the Amplified bible. I used it briefly once but quickly stopped.

Fairly, the Amplified Bible is a good evangelical study Bible in a sense that it exposes the hidden riches of the original biblical texts.

Thank you Mark for explaining how the Amplified Translation should be used in much the same way as a study bible, clarifying that many of the comments are interpretive and not in the original texts. In 1965 I received a gift copy of the Amplified NT and found the text informative but always used it to augment a traditional translation.

I have enjoyed reading The Amplified Bible Expanded Edition. The added words have helped with clarity of text.

I was planning to buy an amplified bible but I wasn't quite sure what to expect from it. Thanks for the accurate explanation as I don't want to be careless with it. You always want to be as accurate as possible in scripture explanations since I often deal with young people who want to hear the Word.

Mark, Thank you for explaining the good, and not so good, approach of Amplified Bible. English is not my mother language, so I like to use more than one bible when a passage is not clear for me. At some point, I thought that amplified Bible was the "closest" to original language trying to render words to fit a proper grammar. Now I see that it is a guess. The Bible does not say explicitly many things, like: Why Cain and Abel's offering were different? Sometimes the mystery is part of the message. Thank you for you Bible videos. Hello, Mark! Your video on the Amplified Bible is astute and insightful. But could I ask your opinion on The Voice Translation? Should I or should I not use it or should I be sedulous and deliberate in using it?

I bought an Amp Study Bible a few years back and find it very useful for everyday reading. My issues have ALL been with the study notes (albiet few and far between) in which case I use e-Sword, where I can compare translations and theological notes, for clarity.

One recent issue I became aware of by comparing multiple English translations was in Luke 11:8. Some versions say the man was rewarded for his "persistence" while others say his "boldness." A few even try to combine both ideas. It was also interesting to me to see how the NASB changed its mind a few times with later editions on this verse.

That's interesting. I never knew that they admitted to being a translation that tried to open up Greek and Hebrew word meanings and phrases. I just always thought the AMP elaborated and provided more understanding in depth of the verses and passages, which is pretty simple to me. But yeah that Moses guess was adding to the word of God. I don't know why people keep playing with His word when He specifically curses everyone who does that. Something is seriously wrong with people. I prefer it over the KJV because it's an easier more modern read and opens up the text more.

In Exodus 4, I think your criticism of the Amplified version is overblown if you take into consideration verses 25 and 26. To me it is clearly inferred that after the circumcision God allowed him to recover therefore the explanation is common sense.

The Amplified version is very interesting. For examples: Exodus 20:13 - KJV: Thou shalt not kill - Amplified: You shalt not murder Psalms: 49:16 - KJV: "one" - Amplified: "ungodly" Amplified > KJV Watering down shouldn't be tolerated. I mostly read the Hebrew - English translations. They seem more direct and no beating around the bush. God has His own interpretation. We shouldn't use our own.

The video is a bit old but maybe you're still working on your project. For me Revelation Chapter 18... I was reading it in the NASB and in verse 2 it references a dwelling place for demons and a prison of every clean spirit. It seemed a bit odd. I looked at the ESV and it uses 'haunt' for each of these. A haunt, using an English dictionary is, "a place frequented by a specified person or group of people." This helped me make much more sense of it. I don't understand why the NASB translators decided to use different words for each of these but I did confirm using Strongs numbers that they are the same word in the Greek. Note: I do not read/understand Greek or Hebrew and only the English was used to make sense of this beyond knowing it was the same word. Please feel free to use this text in any way that benefits you, your project, or any of your future projects. I just hope it's helpful. Also, thank you for your work helping people break free from the prison that is KJV Onlyism. You're work is excellent. I have your book on this on order because I've enjoyed your videos.

I love the AMPC to help me expand the general meaning of English words. But I noticed it’s like a thesaurus, or a dictionary, or added synonyms, or antonyms…etc For precise theology it’s not helpful.

I think AMP can be very misleading. John 3:16 is a good example of how misleading it can be. “For God so loved” is taken as “how much God loved” the world. A clearer English translation is “For God loved the world in this way.” AMP totally misses it and actually promotes a reading that isn’t in the text.

Fully agree that amplified leads you to questions you didn’t think to ask. Every time I check it, there’s something new I end up searching. This week week I’ve been in Psalm 1, and AMP goes a little rouge in verse 6. Psalms 1:6 (AMP) For the LORD knows and fully approves the way of the righteous, But the way of the wicked shall perish. They kept the literal “knows” but added “and fully approves.” The “and” is italics so we know they added it. The “fully approved” is inferred, but they didn’t isolate it with any syntax. None of the other translations go that direction with the interpretation. They use guards, watches over, guides, protects...

Sounds like a regular study bible has all the advantages of an Amplified bible without the associated risks. Thank you for the insights and I particularly like the quote: "the best meaning is the least meaning."

Every time another translation is put out, it undermines the other translations. Each new translation is a statement that says we can't know what God said but we can try to get a little closer. Multiplicity of Bible translations tells the world, and tells Christians, That the translators don't really understand the original languages and so neither can we, or that we cannot bring the full meaning of the original languages to another language, making the translations not fully reliable, and so we need a magisterium. And we know where this kind of thinking ends up- either to our thoughts being controlled by scholasticism or rejecting the Bible as a fully trustworthy God-breathed scripture.

The AMP Bible is surely good to me, it's one of my favorite Bible translations, but let me ask a question: What is the most accurate Bible translation in the English (US, UK...) language?

Oh my!! You really need to rethink what the amplification does.

Well it is fairly obvious for exodus 4:24 if you simply read verse 25 that the added bracket is obviously correct....... Also you are missing a very obvious point. There is no way for one word to equal "agape" in English, "eros," or "philia" rather you need multiple words that are absent in many translations.

For crying out loud dude- it is a study bible where everything is tossed into the text. It makes for very poor reading. If you want it written more specifically- go to it's parent bible, the NASB.

In Song of Songs or Song of Solomon 1:2 I have in the Nabre Catholic Bible/ New American Bible Revised Edition "Let him kiss me with kisses of his mouth, for your love is better than wine," But in the AMP version it says "May he kiss me with the kisses of his mouth" (Solomon arrives, she turns to him, saying) "For your love is better than wine.

Some people who do verse mapping look up various words in the Merriam Webster dictionary and decide on the one they like best. Wouldn’t it be more accurate to compare a number of Bible translations for more understanding?

I studied Sanskrit translation and it is impossible to do a word-for-word translation without concealing certain information. I am not practiced in Biblical languages, however, to know if that is the same here or not.

Yeah, the 2 most excellent translations I know of are the word-for-word MEV and the NET Bible but the trouble with any translation is whenever man's ideas are input instead of direct equivalency meaning transmission from Hebrew/Greek to English...translations should work just like language interpreters, for example give me what the French man just said in English and not your own personal thoughts on what he said period. Exact meaning transmission is what is most important not necessarily certain words or ideas or concepts but rather accuracy to what the Hebrew and Greek is saying.

Is the AMP guilty of James Barr's "Illegitimate Totality Transfer"? I know those who use the AMP for overloading contexts with too many connotations.

The ESV publisher boasts of its translation much in the same way, only overstates its accomplishment even more. Christian publishers sort of lie because they need to sell this thing. So they use marketing language rather than straightforward honest language.

Which translation of the Bible do you recommend that is easier to understand than the KJV, but also isn’t corrupt and or mishandled ( changed or screwed with)

As a hard line left wing heretic, who prefers the ESV since it's fairly easy to parse the text of, I actually made the assumption myself in Exodus about God seeking to kill moses over the uncut kid because that's what then calms God down, I'm not digging into the amplified because I can't find a parallel version with my easy reading ESV. Though I do have a copy for when I encounter people who prefer it, and it is fairly easy reading. I think added context in square brackets should be disclosed in a prefece as how a translator or other scholar interperated it rather than being concealed meaning, and the thesaurus stuff can likely muddle the issue more than clarify it

This video seems way unnecessary and overdramatic. I will just let the Spirit guide me with discernment as He chooses what I should read. We have so many translations in the English to be thankful for.

Another option; Was God saying He would kill Moses or his son that wasn't circumcised? There are commentaries that say it was Moses' son.

Verse Mapping is a newer (to me) way of studying the Bible. There are many versions of it all over You Tube.

My question would be it the OP speaks multiple languages. My strong internal sense is that they do not, and that is why the AMP is confusing them. This is very common for people of just a single language.

I was raised Seventh-day Adventist, and one of the things that ultimately led me out of Adventism was noticing how many times Ellen G. White, the SDA prophet, made extrabiblical claims about Bible passages in her books. For example, she claimed that Noah preached to the people while he was building the ark in the hopes that they would repent and be saved. She also said that Jesus' brothers were Joseph's sons from a previous marriage, that Mary Magdalene was the same person as Mary of Bethany and worked as a prostitute to Roman soldiers, and the "locusts" that John the Baptist ate were really bean pods, among other things. Adventists even have their own Bible paraphrase known as the Clear Word that inserts some of EGW's commentaries like that into the text without notation. I still keep the Sabbath (because I believe that is scriptural) but feel that too much of SDA theology is based on extrabiblical revelation and thus is problematic. That said, the SDA pastor that I did my pre-baptism studies with pointed out something that I later understood in more detail, which is how Romans 6: 23 contrasts the "wages of sin" with the "gift of God." Wages are something you earn, and a gift is something that is given to you for free. One time a few years ago I preached at the SDA church my family attended and chose to do it on that very topic, after I realized just the deeper significance of that verse.

When I bought my AMP Bible the marketing copy said the notes in brackets were the answers to common questions people had about the Bible. Let US make man in our image. Who?
