The Hopi and Zuni amongst others are their descendants. The Navajo claim to be (Anasazi is a Navajo word meaning "ancients ones" or "ancestral enemy") but Western anthropologists and archeologists were brought in to settle that longstanding dispute between the Hopi and Navajo over who had the greater claim. While it's impossible to verify, the lifestyle and religious lives of the Hopi more closely coincide with the archeological remains of the Anasazi civilization than the Navajo do.
You are an extraordinary player, but... To me personally, it would be intersting to hear what your flutes sound like exactly, in a normal situation, like a living room or outdoors, without that echo or any other added sound-effects, Basically what your flutes sound like if I was to buy one and play it myself, knowing I don't have access to an echo-cave near me to practice...
+Erik The Flutemaker I really admire your work and you have an extraordinary knowledge of flutes. I'm not specifically on the look-out for a flute, but I play harmonica, chromatic and a chord harmonica, and I recently bought a clarinet. And I have a cheap small Indian Bansuri flute, very difficult to get a sound out of it, and when I do, it's incredibly loud. So for me it's interest in musical instruments in general, and I am also an amateur audio-mixer guy with an interest in sound technique, hence my comment.
Hilvert Scheper . His flutes are very high quality. They sound amazing with or without reverb/echo. Because he makes flutes that are "time period " most of the scales you hear where in fact played in caves, around water and places of great reverb. I have several. The only downside,.... His flutes are addictive and you'll be hooked. : )
ANASAZI Is one of the flutes that i love so much . i have old recording from you playing it . i listen to it every day :) ..... What is the Scale on Anasazi ?
The Anasazi Flute is traditionally tuned to the Major Pentatonic scale without the 4th interval of the scale (same in this video). It gets the Exotic tone because of the rim blown design (like a Ney, Kaval, Shakuhachi or Andean Quena Flute). The Anasazi Flute scale is two notes different than the Minor Pentatonic on the N.A.F. The Anasazi Scale removes the 4th interval and adds the 2nd interval instead. On a N.A.F. (6 hole in the key of A) the notes are" A, C, D, E, F, G & A". On the Anasazi, the notes are "A, B, C#, E, F#, G# & A". Hope it helps.
@@sleepingturtle8888 your reply certainly puts the anastazi flute into a neat little box. I'm wondering. Do you think all native american flute makers knews one bit of the concept of Major Pentatonic, scale, or even the letters of our alphabet to make music?
@@Angel-yl1ck I had to correct the Anasazi notes in my comment. My apologies. To answer your question, I do think that most flute makers know the western musical alphabet but I have found very few who understand music theory. Particularly when addressing intervals or teaching their relationship within scales. Many musical scales are formed by, changing, adding or subtracting notes, that's what gives them their unique sound and timbre. I hope this helps.
Hello Erik, love your work! I was curious, do you have these flutes still available, or is it custom order? And what is the hand sizing for this flute?
Considering this has the Quena/Quenacho style mouthpiece, how does it handle the upper register compared to a more traditional one? Does it still have good tone color and pitch for Octave Octave +5 2nd Octave ?
Hi Misha, This is about a 2 1/2 octave flute. The idea of using the peace sign fingers together below, is because it sounds like part of the poetry of the scale. That second note along doesn't feel and sound right. So I always try to play an exotic flute in a way that makes it sound best. And share my findings, Regards, Erik
@@ErikTheFlutemakerCom Thank you very much for answering!! Please tell me the entire sound range of the flute. What note corresponds to each hole? From the lowest note to the highest
I try to keep them at the root note of Bb. Both the large and smaller version in the Ancient Set. It is not easy to remodel a flute for one order. Takes a lot of time and wais a lot of stock. But in todays home recording apps you can change a key to suit your song.
Hi Alec: Just looked it up. That was a thrill. I don't believe that would be one we would make but I enjoyed seeing a very different flute out there! Thanks! Erik
@@ErikTheFlutemakerCom Yes they have a beautiful style of playing, sounds very ancient. I enjoy your videos, being a drummer and former flute player, I want to get back into the flute... I'm just doing some research as to where I'd like to start. Thank you for sharing your videos and all your work.
