Thanks again for the vid. I wish all teachers made vids like these. The general public would be a lot smarter.

I keep adding these cool places to my list for checking out next. It's a long list! But, with your books and other videos I've already been to some of them and it was such fun! Thank you so much!

The lists for both of us never end. I will never have to worry about drumming up content, just need to make the time and effort to get out to these amazing places.

I just read that the initial point volcano is believed to have diverted the snake. How unique is the Yellowstone hot spot globally? I’m starting to believe we are dang lucky to live on this kind of geology.

At least if it is currently dormant. haha

A quick look at the Murphy 30X60 geologic map shows that lava from Initial Point shield volcano does not extend to Snake River so it appears that it did not divert the river but let me know where you read that. As for Yellowstone, it is the most well studied of only a handful of continental hot spots (most are in ocean and erupt much more passively). The geology of the Snake River Plain is truly world class and in many cases, one of a kind. Lucky indeed.

It never ceases to amaze me all the different forces in the past and still are shaping this land we live in. Really appreciate your insights and your videos! Is this the same thing that happened at the Malad Gorge?
@shawnwillsey

Many drainages in the Snake River Plain have been disrupted by lava (such as the Big Wood River north of Shoshone). Malad Gorge shows evidence of being carved by very large floods (megafloods) but the exact source of the water has not been clearly determined. I have this on my list of places to visit and do a video.

Thank you. Very shocking to see how high each layer is. Not small events for sure.

has anyone used zircon dating in this area?
@shawnwillsey

Funny you asked. I've talked with Paul Link at ISU about running zircons from the sands of this paleochannel. Need to figure out who can foot the bill first. I'm curious to see if there was a different source area feeding the Snake River at this time.
