Longinus likly was carrying a common pillum, a throwing spear with a wooden shaft tipped by a along iron rod with a spear point at the front end. Designed to be thrown and on impact bend such that the unfortunate foe hit with it could not easily dislodge it. Light and handy it would have been a great personal defense weapon to carry on duty for a Legionaire present at a public execution much like an M4 or AK would be toted today, or an MP40 or STEN during WW2. Whatever happened to it after the Crucifixion would be however Ancient and Medieval discarded armor and weapons would have been recycled. Maybe its part of an engine block, wrench, or skyscraper pillar by this time.

This is the most sane opinion I've seen so far and also happens to be my own. Just like with the stories of the holy grail that you hear, that spear wouldn't have been anything special. Every other soldier there had one just like it, and it's very unlikely anyone kept that particular spearhead as a relic. Claiming to have holy relics and enshrining these objects in cathedrals was more about power and convincing people you deserved that power.

True. At the time I would think that to the Romans, Jesus was just a guy being executed. The spear would've continued its life as the weapon it was intended to be. Maybe ended up in someone and buried, discarded or eventually recycled to something else.

@richardkluesek4301 Год назад
@@cylon1983 I'd like to think it still exists as something useful, perhaps a K Bar on a serviceman's hip. or a gun barrel in a 1911 sidearm. Maybe just rusted away in discarded junk about 2000 years ago or became a hammer or shovel.

If you want to read a fictitious version of the lance read the Barry Sadler series 'Casca: The Eternal Mercenary' follows Longinus as he is cursed by Jesus to live eternally until Jesus returns. The series follows his life over 2,000 years during major events in history.

Longinus wasn't cursed, when he pierced Jesus, water and blood droped on him and cleared him from his sins, and he than saw who actually was Jesus, and later he became saint, at least he is saint in our church (orthodox), he make many pagans into christians, this is the first time that i red that Longinus was actually cursed.

I know this is out on a limb here, but I had a thought. So many famous items have gone missing over time. I honestly wonder if sometime in the future someone hasn’t invented a Time Machine and gone back and collected items BEFORE history loses track of them. Wars and other times of upheaval would be perfect times to pop back too and snap up an item, or swap it for a fake. Just a thought. Good video.

Not sure where it was recorded that Longinus was blind. This video is the first time I have ever heard this version of the tale. But, think about it. A blind Roman soldier? If he was blind, how could he have known where to thrust the spear? Why would a Roman cohort keep a blind man on active duty? As a guard? That makes no sense. The Viennese spear allegedly had one of the nails used to crucify Jesus embedded in it? Obviously, this would have to have been a later alteration to the spear because the nails were still holding the body to the cross when it was used to pierce his side. That makes no sense, either. Also, the Nazis didn't invade Austria in 1938. The Nazis annexed Austria in a move called "The Anschluss." They simply declared Austria was part of Germany. It was a political move, not a military one. Personally, I don't trust any story regarding any "holy relic." They all seem to come from hundreds, even thousands, of years after the fact. They are all tales constructed by those in power to keep or increase their hold on the ignorant folks over whom they rule. I am not so easily intimidated.

He would have been looked on as a common person just as any of the others being crucified at that time albeit he was probably considered crazy for speaking out agains the status quo. And to say it again, why would any military keep a blind soldier? That makes zero sense.

Ah, the spear of Casca Longinus. Barry Sadler, of "Ballad of the Green Berets" fame, in later life, wrote a cool series of books about Longinus, cursed to be a soldier forever, fighting in wars throughout history. He himself died while fighting as a mercenary in Afghanistan, back in the 90s, though I think his death was in a bar fight. Quiz next week. Peace.

The version of the spear that has what is evidently gold wrapped around its middle section, as well as many grooves and other embellishments rendered into the forging itself, is the version that I have most often seen in photographs and videos of the true lance. However, it seems unlikely to me that such an ornate and no doubt expensive spear head would belong to an average Roman foot soldier. I do not mean to imply that the holy lance does not exist, but if it does, I would expect it to be a simple and common object; nothing more than is required to arm the infantry. Assuming that to be true, it seems likely that it would be a difficult item to find, as well as to certify it's lineage back to Longinus himself. Although I am not religious myself, I think it would be amazing and exciting to discover that the true lance still exists today and is possessed by some responsible party.

Nero's mother was messed up and for decades played chess with her son like he was just a pawn of use and nothing more yet he did her in is the part we get in school and history that stands out most. So much in history is just like this tiny example.

Actually, Jesus was intended to die on the cross as reparation for the sin of all mankind, as the ultimate sacrifice which was represented by the Jewish practice of sacrificing a lamb on the day of atonement for the Nation of Israel, it is important to note, the lamb chosen to be sacrificed could have no blemish, be sickly or have broken bones. If the Romans had broken the legs of Jesus (as was the practice, since in order to breathe while on the cross you had to push up with your legs, and of course when the legs were broken you suffocated) it would have made Jesus an unfit sacrifice.

Superstitions and fables passed down by generations. "Anybody that has this thing in my hand shall rule the world." Proceeds to get defeated, then "Oh, that's not the real one, this one is." The part of history I find to be the most fascinating is, we still don't know how much of it was fabrications or counterfeits that were handed down. The more artifacts we find, some can be explained away to a religiosity that will "find" reasons why the previous artifact was not the real one, but not divulge it, and by that point there are so many fakes, they just make up another story. On top of that, the people maintaining the artifacts were the same ones that had every reason to misrepresent it from the start. The same church that relies on the beliefs that the artifact is authentic, is also the same one that needs to maintain it is authentic to prove their beliefs. If the Vatican were to allow true investigation into it's relics, they have a religious and monetary motivation to make every effort to ensure their authenticity is not disproven. If these "artifacts" were to be disproven, the perceived value drops from $3 Billion to $1 Million, so they have a financial stake & religious motivation in limiting access. Counterfeiting always had a financial motive, so how many of the relics we have perceived as real were actually fakes that were unknowingly believed to be real? I would be heartbroken if I spent my entire life investigating an artifact just to find out it was a fraud from some shyster back in the middle ages or earlier. They learned the lesson of letting the Shroud of Turin be investigated too closely, and now it's whole authenticity is murky because carbon dating dated it to "between the years 1260 and 1390" to a 95% accuracy. Add in the fact that the Catholic church always had a an anti-science stance (because it could have the ability to disprove them), and I take any religious artifact with a grain of skepticism. It's frustrating that one has to be skeptical of everything because the Catholic church has such a history of representing their own best interests instead of humanity's. It continues to this day as they still protect themselves instead of the victims of the church abuse scandals among other things. Science continues to evolve, but the church still protects itself instead of humanity. They preach "The Truth", but have proven to lie (often). I may have gone a bit off topic, but is it wrong to question a narrative or, is it better to prove a certainty?

The original lance would have been an ordinary Roman infantry weapon, one of thousands made with no great particular artistry. Far more important are Christ's greatest hits: Love your neighbor. Only truth can set you free. Forgive your enemies.
