@@metallicsnake. Thank you for the inspiration. I have decided that I will continue to exist and not burn every single piece of evidence that proves I am a thing.
"This is 16-year-old Tamorihinoa, in two and a half minutes, he will be married to a Moomin" That literally broke me. I made a noise that could be felt physically and mentally, I am less okay than I was before, and that was already bad enough.
And yet, somehow.... They have a year anniversary before his next birthday.. I'm confused, but quite honestly, at this point... what does any of this matter?
@@kris.p.bacon1361 yeah, I got that. But if you're going to write a child grooming story, at least get birthdays and anniversaries straight. I mean, god... timelines are super basic.
This could be a cool horror concept where you find yourself in a town where everyone acts like monters that recently appeared and are abducting children is normal and just go on with thier lives
@@rustycrowbar4250 I mean, I feel like a little editing and a change of music would make it feel like a horror show in no time. Just linger on various facial expressions, apply some minimal effects maybe if you wanna go that extra mile, honestly I feel like if you made this an abridged series and changed the music you’d be golden
It's interesting philosophically because it's like some kinda weird glimpse into a different civilization entirely where the things considered "normal" is just plain freaky to us. It weirdly evokes a certain feeling for me that's probably like what Columbus felt when he first landed in the Americas.
there’s something so darkly hilarious in the way the teacher is referred to as “The One Who Sells The Children”. Lovecraftian in a way worthy of a story where a child is sold to a moomin.
I agree with the sentiment, but Lovecraft would have given the lady a name like “Gizzum Chink” and told us to be afraid of it with no additional context 🙄 People gotta stop praising the guy if they haven’t actually read him.
@@AnkhAnanku this is a joke comment on a bad anime, not a literary comparison to an old fiction writer who was scared of air conditioners. It is *not* that deep, my dude.
@@AnkhAnanku Lovecraft wrote well, but whether you appreciate what he wrote is another story You cannot deny his ability, but you can choose to not like it
@@AnkhAnanku He's a solid writer as far as pure horror goes, but his importance to fiction is that he's probably the first major writer in human history to NOT place humans as the center of the universe, and indeed, regard them as tiny, inconsequential specks in the vast emptiness of the cosmos populated by unspeakable horrors that probably wouldn't even give mankind a second thought.
This video was sent to me by a dear friend in what I can only assume was an assassination attempt. Do not drink water while watching. I laughed until I cried, I cried until I choked, I choked until I nearly vomited, then drank water and went back to choking. I swear my life flashed before my eyes. "The wretched Kanenogi" has become a permanent crack in my armor. Simply hearing it uttered causes me to cackle. Well done sir. Your delivery and intonation were incredible.
Honestly, that was me throughout the entire video. Like WTF is a moomin!!!! Does anyone know if they ever explain it? I don’t think I have it in me watch the show to find out. 😅
honestly the monster designs are pretty cool and a great improvement over the "monster girl" stuff you usually see, if only the Wretched Kananogi cared about the age of consent, or consent in general
I appreciate that there was no victim-blaming aimed at the child wives. They are helpless against the forces that compell them to be sold to (literal) monsters who perversely use them for shampooing and hugging
It's kind of weird that the only monster that has precedent to do and get away with this is the misfortune eating shrine snake god thing, since it wouldn't be surprising for it to demand some sort of spousal sacrifice in exchange for good fortune and services. Every other monster has zero precedent to get away with this since they all seem to do nothing, provide nothing, and have no leeway to get away with their childnapping. This actually would have been a very interesting story if all of the monsters were minor gods who are providing some sort of benefit to society in exchange for spouses to serve as a fictionalized social commentary on power dynamics conflicting with moral values...but the vast majority of the monsters are just walking, pointless jokes.
All the other wives were picked but from this videos synopsis [never actually watched it] Sitka (Spelling might be wrong but bandage moomin) seemed like they were forced by their child bride.
i actually remember watching this back in highschool. i thought it was really wholesome... because i was 16 or 17 and didnt realize the implications. its so sad, it could really be this weird cute miniseries if not for the age gap, which, for such a weird premise, youd think would be the least of the worries, but here we are....
@@ok472 not that I know of but because the boys are in high school the implications are kinda sketchy, intended or not. i feel like it would have worked better with like college students
Every time he cuts himself off mid word to exclaim "WHAT ARE YOU?!" At the worm thing in the background brings me one step closer to god and I am grateful.
I love Ichiya and Poor Tsukitsuka more than any other pairing that's been introduced to us. Their relationship is actually consensual, and they appear to be of the same age. Also, Poor Tsukitsuka is just adorable.
This video is so fucking funny. The delivery, the jokes stacking on top of each other like a precarious tower of books going up to the ceiling, the building hysteria every time the snake showed up in the anime, the increasing resignation to events as the episode recaps continue... I kept having to pause to giggle and then immediately choke on more laughter at the very next sentence when I unpaused. Maybe my new favorite RU-vid video.
The reveal about the ex-wife who isn’t even an ex-wife had me _sobbing into my pillow_ for about 3 minutes, this manga is the definition of surrealist horror and I’m truly scared 😭💀
I think I can kind of understand. When I was a high schooler the idea idea of just any non threatening humanoid thing being really into me and us being in a relationship that was physical but not overtly sexual would be a really appealing fantasy. I think the fact they don’t really talk or act like a normal person takes away the pressure to meet normal human social standards and expectations and just be yourself exploring something that was going to feel weird the first time even if it was with a regular person. The fact that they’re soft and cuddly and kind of cute can help something that can feel kind of scary and adult feel more approachable. Idk this feels less like someone fantasizing about having a teen sold to them and more about exploring the desire for a relationship at a young age with all the scary stuff (or stuff that can be scary for someone new to relationships) like having to interact with another human body or pressure to impress someone and not be awkward or any expectation of being sexual beyond just being physical taken away which I can totally see the appeal of. I think even the fact that they’re sold into the relationship against their will actual caters to the want of not having to put yourself out there or risk rejection or communicate confidence that you want a relationship and rather be able to have a relationship while still being passive. I don’t want to tmi strangers on RU-vid but when I was really little in middle school and stuff I had a lot of fantasies, romantic and otherwise, that involved me not having a lot of choice or agency just because that stuff was kind of scary and someone ignoring that was a way of feeling secure that they definitely wanted you if that makes sense. Also the fact that it’s a unique creature kind of makes it extra special that they’re into you. Like the same way it’s kind of special in inyuyasha to have a wolf demon boy friend instead of just a regular guy. Could totally be over reading into this but every element of the show that feels weird and off (just based off this video) feels like it does server a specific purpose in appealing to a specific kind of fantasy I can imagine a lot of awkward high schoolers or others having and in that lens if feels more like a weird quirk of how we enjoy the idea of being involved romantically with others than it is creepy imo. Love the video though it’s super funny srry if my comment sounded to critical or anything that’s not my intention.
This is exactly it. It's basically a twist on BL manga that further removes the "threat" of sexuality and allows the viewer to project whatever personality they like on what are essentially animate dakimakura. It doesn't really take away from the creepiness factor of arranged child marriage and the awkwardness of the enforced gender roles, but that's fujoshi fantasy fulfillment for you. (I say this as a fujoshi myself.)
I mean there're plenty wattapad fanfics written by like middle school girls about being sold into slavery/forcefully married to/kidnapped/etc by like one direction or edward cullen or whoever. I think it is a way for them to explore, but there's a little difference when we're talking about an anime that was written and produced by adults. Its rhetoric is legitimised by the fact that it's 'officialy' on tv and in print. This could've been a cute sort of romance-ish comforting anime that explores these sort of safe dynamics without there being childbrides that are sold by their teachers lol And there definetely are anime and manga like this, too! Also from what I can gather from this video, this story isn't entirely devoid of sexuality, either, obvi not in an overt explicit or mature way, but the mc clearly does have some feelings of this sort, which would be totally fine if it didn't seem like his spouse is an adult(?)
The trope of the romance story where the woman is suddenly kidnapped/sold into slavery/marriage to an actually loving man is literally centuries old. Since the forced aspect removed all culpability and responsibility from them, they can't be blamed for getting into a romance with the handsome stranger after all, allowing them to enjoy it without guilt. No surprise if some gay boys enjoy similar fantasies, they are after all also discouraged from wanting these sorts of relationships.
@@ebbiebean9385 It's super fair to feel that way but I also think taking out the forced marriage would make it less fulfilling for the core audience it's going for if that makes sense
This is like something you would read on the SCP wiki. A town umder a cognito-hazard where bizarre creatures arrive, go to the local high school, demand one of the kids marry it.. and everyone is fine with this. Even the bride him/herself is fine with it.
Dear god... you have cracked the code!!! But not only that, the record of such an event is its own cognitohazard... but what effects I cannot yet determine, except that it is messing with my mind!!
The creatures seem to have some sort of effect on the minds of their victims, immediately brainwashing them into being their "wife" As of yet there is no known reason as to why they do this, as they don't seem to need to procreate, but... I don't want to imagine such horrors. Get Dr. Bright with the chainsaw cannon ASAP
I liked the part where The Wretched Kanenogi said “it’s Moomin time” and then he Moomined all over The Poor Tamori. Truly, one of the anime that happened. I shall now go wash my eyes in penance.
There's two ways this show can be made slightly more wholesome. 1: the arranged marriage thing is still there but all the characters are 18+, avoiding the creepy child bride stuff. 2: there is no arranged marriage, and the monsters are teenagers like the humans and are simply their boyfriends.
i can easily imagine an alternative version of this in which creatures are normal to pass by in regular human society, but for some reason the government is very into them coupling with humans, maybe they give some mystical good fortune or supernatural favors, so they promote a lot the concept of people accepting these marriages like here by giving housing and stuff, that way it can keep the silliness of "surprise marriage" since the adult can at first chose this for the benefits but grow to love their monster husband
This weird story is based on a practice in shinto religion. A shrine maiden or shrine priestess doesn't have to marry because she is considered the bride of the kami (or god with a small g) of the shrine. While the god translation implies that kami are mega powerfull or a big deal in a society they are in effect any yokai(mirage or spirit creature) that is enshrined and worshipped. For example a kappa a turtle river spirit that drowns children can be appeased and worshipped into a kami that prevents drowning. The example in the show that vaguelly shows one of the beings behaving like a kami is the size changing snake that brings luck that seems like a snake kami depiction. There is certainly intresting worldbuilding and stories that can be made around the concept of children being the (potentially arrenged) brides or grooms to local kami to ensure that the kami remains content and helpfull but this story seems to really gloss over alot of details in the setting. This might be a little less weird in japanese culture since they atleast know what the beings are like if it was a western story where children where married away to fairies. It would be weird but we would atleast know what the husband was and have an idea of why society might agree to marry them away. So it would be helpfull if we where shown more of why it would be a boon for society to marry away people to these yokai instead of just glossing over the how and why of it like in the story.
@@simonwahlen7150 so basically like nuns and priest in the church. Only the west could/would never be able to make a cartoon where God actually marries due to Abrahamic religions God is a single being and modern christianity's monogamy
I've read this (don't ask) and the worst part is that everyone is Obsessed with the giant snake to the point where his wife is jealous. Something isnt right here.
I have watched this literally every day for like 3 days. It's in the escalating despair of your voice which starts immediately upon beginning to describe what happens in this show. This was so much better than the anime, I would watch this over it any day 🤣
Im not going to lie this anime is weird but the commentary this man makes allows the show to be soooo much better and actually really funny, *metaphorically* of course
this was conceptualized, illustrated, noticed and approved, signed off by an executive, animated, and presumably passed through a few more sets of eyes beyond that. the contents of this slice-of-life high school drama demon-pedo-boywife-arranged-marriage-show were, if not actively constructed by all involved, tacitly endorsed by a lot of people. it makes me feel like i'm missing something.
It's sorta based off of folk lore (I think commonly japanese) where mythical creatures seem to demand brides as payment or for safety, so I think that aspect of it sorta makes it kinda interesting, and not a completely random idea.
If they were like in college and dating I would be into this, i mean I read a manga about a working adult woman dating a guy who had a cat head and everyone treated it like it was normal, it was pretty cute.
17:43 - For serious, though, that _is_ a bit disturbing. Like, imagine if a bunch of alien beings just show up, immediately integrate in human society and start enforcing bizarre customs for poorly understood reasons, and _nobody finds it strange or worrying._ To the point where even people who entertain the thought that maybe these creatures are literal demons only do so jokingly. Almost as if their subconscious is trying to warn them about it but _something_ doesn't allow them to take it seriously.
The sentence I'm says that there are A LOT of them recently, not that they only showed up recently. Given Lauchen is regarded as a local deity, creatures of this sort have been around for a while(legal framework existing for them is proof of this), but the population has suddenly increased as of the time the story begins.
The authors learned about "male wife" and never looked back So I went to watch it right after this vid and honestly, if you look past the weirdness of it all it's actually a very cute anime lol
I think what disturbs me the most about this is that a teacher/random woman (idk anymore I think it switched mid-video lol) sold them off, and their parents (if they even have any) did nothing to even stop this I also find it funny how the more this goes on, the more exasperated you sound, and I can feel your pain because it is most likely how everyone feels about this
Most people especially within the targeted audience (people that watch fiction animated stories for entertainment reasons and not to get offended by every little thing) don't take this seriously.
This is awful (I’m very desensitized tho) but the part that kills me is how cute the fucking moomin is. I LOVE that character design so much it’s adorable and reminds me of totoro. But why, just why did it have to be marriage? It could’ve been a buddy slice of slice show that was super sweet and adorable. And yet here we are, with the fucking groomins…
I remember at the scene at 11:37, the teacher briefly says something along the lines of "there have been some concerns about the fairness of this competition..." as the camera watches a giant snake dominating. This moment stood out the most to me because (1) it's like the only jingai we get to see outside of the main cast's husbands (2) this joke is the closest I remember this series coming to worldbuilding. [E] what the heck... you're telling me this snake relegated to the background is actually the coolest character? It sounds like the manga is a lot more interesting than the adaptation
The ominous intro punctuated by sentences like "in two and a half minutes... he will be married to a moomin" followed by an ever distressed tone is so entertaining. I particularly like how you described watching sick anime almost as a pandemic which you happen to have brought to US.
This intro reads like a foreword to some book I read a few years back. Extremely dramatic, yet when you actually attempt to read it out loud, you can’t help but do so in the most monotone and exhausted voice imaginable. Basically, I absolutely love it. In other news, I can feel myself losing my grip on my physical body and am about to fade into the warm embrace of nonexistence any second now.
I call myself a fan of horror with cute exteriors. It is my favourite thing. But I don't think I've ever seen something where they refuse so stubbornly to ever address the horror in-universe. It's surreal that even when it gets creepier, the characters still don't wise up. This ends up becoming a layer of horror in itself, and I really hope that this series goes on to inspire others. There is so much room for seriously good cute dark stories if the writer is willing to keep the protagonists unaware all the way through. I'm tired of the creepypasta approach where things go from 0-100 and rather than blend cute and horror, they just switch them. It's so lazy. And I've sadly become so used to it in my starved search for creepy cute content. I've forgiven way too many bad attempts. Seeing this show, makes it clear that we should be getting better. That there's still so much untapped potential! Thank you for sharing this with us.
minor fact: 16 is legal marriage age in japan. So in Japan where i assume this is happening none of them are child brides. Still sold into marriage tho, but socially more acceptable. I assume if the author was for example American or something the characters would be 18 minimum.
I know I saw a series like this that was genuinely made to be a horror where none of the characters are scared and the whole thing is played off as normal. For the life of me I can't remember what it was but I know it had body horror and it was more about exploring what normal is.
This video in my mind is how it feels to go insane. I feel like this is what happened to the Hunter in Bloodborne during the course of the night. What’s likely most disturbing is my lack of reaction. As another Bloodborne reference, I’ve gained so many eyes this does not phase me
So uh… I went on Crunchyroll to check this show out only to see that it’s already in my recently watched section on the final episode. I share my account with a lot of people so I start asking my friends and they knew nothing about it. The only person left was my mom so I asked her and she was like like “oh yeah that show is really really cute :)” 😭😭😭😭
@@runeanonymous9760 it's actually pretty cute, i really didn't thought that deep about it, i just enjoyed the whole anime and comedy on it. It is not supposed to be serious, ppl really need to come to real life sometimes and see that anime is just anime in the end of the day.

...I am now left to wonder if an influx of non-humans seeking brides is what caused Japan to consider raising the age of consent. Was it to prevent situations like this from occurring? Wretched Kanenogi is among us as we speak!
well I mean if you look into japans folklore and myths with the youkai , (I assume they are all here youkai) youkai x humans were always a thing . always also to think they are late-teens here not like 12 years old which would indeed (isn't like it?) in japan or asian countries not even be classed as child. I think that's more of a western thing. I thought the whole anime was more a parody like nichijou for some reason
This made me realize there's a inversely proportional scale of viewer's acceptance of the morality shown in media and weirdness. The weirdest it gets, the less I care as I'm too confused to analyze the morals shown in screen. Anyways great video, I'll show it to my family when they need to know what anime can be about.
Yeah, and that fenomena has been used for good actually. A lot of topics has been discussed openly in fantasy media when it was too controversial to talk about it in realistic media. Racism, LGBT issues, etc etc are way more palatable trough aliens and vampires, so authors said what they wanted avoiding censorship and consumers absorbed it with less resistance. This, however, is the extreme of the spectrum, the scale is broken now.
I remember watching this a long time ago and thinking “its kind of not good he doesn’t have a choice in the matter..” “but its a giant capybara thing so..”
I think this is why, to me at least, Tsuchikiyose is the most concerning, because it kinda just seems like he married two preteen girls, which is horrifying and also not in any way outside the realm of real-world possibility.
@@Magmafrost13 i mean, they’re demons, for all we know all the monsters are like 5 years old. The only difference is that they have the appearance of being somewhat human.

It took me far too long to realize that you were just calling it a moomin and that this wasn't actually a truly audacious official crossover, and honestly I appreciate that. I'm still bewildered how he could have mistakenly thought that he had been married when everybody else was calling themselves wives and the teacher made him be in a wedding.
16:40, I love how he's just yelling the story as if it is some outrage (it is), but then he just stops MID SENTENCE to yell " *WHAT ARE YOU* " . In such an accusatory tone, I love it.
Imagine the whole story is about young adults who were abandoned by their parents and family, getting so isolated from reality that they end up selling their souls to demons so that they can survive.
The teacher(?) woman was the villain of the story, which is funny cause the author is a woman meaning that the teacher(?) was her self insert as she wrote the most horrifying literature known to man and disguised it as innocent. On a serious note: this show is more of a turn off your brain and smile at the weird thing happening kind of show it's not meant to be taken seriously, so overall I liked it very much, very weird, very entertaining, afterall tragedy and horror is just comedy if you look at it at a far away distance.
One day, I was bored, so I pressed the "random" button on Crunchyroll a few times and watched the first episode of each thing that came up. The fifth or so time I clicked that button, this show appeared. With trepidation, I watched the first episode, like I had with so many before. I was horrified, and yet compelled. It's the only show that I watched in its entirety that day; like a five car pileup, I had to know what happened, even if seeing it cursed me with this knowledge
crazy right i randomly ended up watching this as a kid and didn't think much of it. back then I had no taste so I would watch anything no matter what it was.
The comparison to a Lovecraft protagonist is honestly fitting. This video makes me want to completely cover my walls, floor, and ceiling in insane eldritch scribbles that contain elder truths from beyond reality
what is this style of narration called. the deadpan tone of voice clashing with flowery, verbose descriptors. the wretched kanenogi. ive seen one other youtuber talk like this and it was great there too. i love it so much
Ah yes, the anime where a pedophilic moomin clone stalks and harasses children- and it is presented as a charming romcom instead of a horrifying diatribe on the obsession with youth in japan. never change, japan, never change.
...or maybe that's the point. It's presented as normal, but the truth is its horrifying and that's the experience you are supposed to take away from it.

@@kristianhughes3746 like many other anime it seems? because it was started as a satire against those type of stories? (but tbh I dont read mangas so maybe it was a false info)
I saw the title and thought it would be a wholesome, if slightly weird anime. Heard the intro and the dead-inside voice of disbelief and thought "Surely it can't get THAT weird!". I was wrong. This story tries to sell itself as wholesome, if slightly weird, and is instead the horror you rightly label it. This was like a car accident, horrible and yet I can't look away. I am terrified to try to engage with the source material, for it will surely lull me into a false sense of wholesomeness and make me forget about the horrifying nature of it all.
This type of... thing has the most peculiar vibe. When character do or go through horrible things either intentionally for no apparent reason or do not object for no apparent reason. I have found more of these, on an unmentionable here website
Yeah, I remember coming across this manga, read about 3 chapters, went "why is everyone just accepting this?" and "is there supposed to be some point at which this creature redeems itself as an ideal partner? and not just the kid liking it for no goddamn reason?" and just ended up dropping it. It is to my massive relief that your video allowed me to be completely entertained while revealing that I had, in fact, made the right decision. I think this is supposed to be some sort of koan, to make us question the entire concept of arranging child brides for marriage. Also I watched this at 2.5x speed and it made the entire experience even more amazing. "What are you-WAIT THERE ARE GIRLS AT THIS SCHOOL!"
I swear to all that is holy that I do not know what I will do if it was not a diatribe on child marriage in a severely insular and emotionally disconnected culture...
Maybe it's a koan. The other possibility is that it's the author's weird embarrassing fantasy about being dommed by Moomin. The latter seems more likely to me.
and the more questions is WHY IS THIS GREENLIGHT INTO PUBLIC WHY?!?! like AT LEAST somekind of manga you get from underground society i understand BUT THIS?!?

@@dirtiestdan4756 The bizarreness and absurdity of it, the way the story plays it off as completely normal, the reactions it gets out of people who are themselves so asdured in their sense of how the world works, the way it plays with our sense of "normal", there's a lot of reasons to like it really. It's creative and fun, and a good reminder that our idea of normal isn't the one way everything has to be to have a mostly peaceful, happy society. If aliens ever did visit Earth in a diplomatic sense, we'd inevitably be in for a lot of culture shock. They could run society in a way that is so counter to our own ideas of what is right or wrong, but their society may thrive far more than our own with more satisfied and content citizens, less political strife, no war, etc. I love that it's the kind of series that leaves you with more questions than it answers, the not knowing can be just as exciting and enjoyable as knowing. Also, I find odd eccentricities and odd creatures rather charming.
Eh, the only problem I could really judge is the underage and incest aspect. Other than that, it’s just creature-human romance, which is already a trope.
I just had a thought, if Tomory becomes 17 after their anniversary then that means he became 16 after they were married which means…. Tomory was forced to marry at 15
