Hell yea I second this! I never really thought about how well Horror can be conveyed, when presented in a PS1 graphics style. I LOVE PS1 GRPHIC HORROR GAMES! This was a great installment. The One and only one thing I would change, would be to hold back your "monster aka big bad" until later in the game. You don't want to show your monster, but instead just elude to it, with voice messages, and notes. Steadily building your tension until the big reveal! The best horror is like sex, don't want to "climax" to soon!
CJU: 9:33 "Ok don't go in the bathroom. That's a bad move." All of us: Ok, who are you, and what did you do with the real CJU? Also, did anyone else notice the root dog and dancing root man just to the right of the doors starting at 15:12 ?
This was really neat, Max's timing for jump scares is really wonderful. They give you just a little extra breathing room after the build up before hitting you with the scare. That moment of quiet before the door gets smashed down, and the space you walk before the TV turns on. It's really well done, rushed ending or not it's a really effective horror game.
An apartment with its own basement and a lock on the kitchen door is pretty silly, but I can overlook that in a game that looks like a first person prequel/sequel to Darkwood.
I may be reading into this game too much, but...to me it seems like a wonderful explanation of major depression. And the fact that he considers this a failed project? Icing on the cake. Given that my idea is at least partially true, I consider this a fantastic representation.
That menu music 🎶🎵 was totally 👍 heh.. and I overall liked this short horror experience cause it definitely did have a lot of potential and I don't know about you but I think we can agree on the fact that there are way more unsatisfying endings out there than this one 🤭
"It's a horror game. I'm here to make bad decisions!" That's pretty much the premise of every horror game. Defintley had potential. Couple of good jumpscares too. Just as we were getting interested in where the roots came from, it ends. Yeah, too bad about that. Maye he can come back to it. Also, tell me where I can get an aprpatment that big... I wish Max had kept his signature way of displaying the controls. The game looked and sounded good. The bathroom jump scare was nice. Max, make a long "this needs some popcorn " game. Lol. 👍🍿🧟♂️
I fully sympathize with the bit at the start you mentioned about thinking it's a failure and not knowing what to do with it. I'm in the same boat right now.
My eyes was glued to this!! Loved it!. My favorite part was after turning on the breaker and seeing the creature at end of hall; hiding out in the utility closet with door closed thinking enemy has left and it broke the door down; very very well executed (I think lol)
I think it's cool that you explained the dev's feelings on the game up front. Not enough consideration is really given to how indie devs feel about their projects, I feel like most people assume all indie devs believe they're the next Hideo Kojima (or insert your favorite mainstream dev here) and tear them apart based on that. Sometimes we create things we aren't proud of, or that age poorly as our skills increase, and that's fine.
why the femur in the pot? was his bro a cannibal? was the tree divine retribution of some sort? and the tree man? it could be fleshed out more, what with the other residents of the building...anyway, it was fun
Wow, a potentially really good horror game. It would be spookier if you could singe the roots with the lighter flame and hear shrieks and/or moans from down below. I hope the dev does more of this, or a sequel, to flesh it out more. I really enjoyed it and want to play it myself soon. Bravo, Max Horror, you immersed me in this game, even with the iffy ending. Honestly if this was a failure I need to see more of this guy’s games. Sure the ending isn’t ideal but I’ve seen games uploaded un-ironically that were a lot worse.
chris i would love to see you do a play through of Nevermind. it is wildly underrated and so few people have done let’s plays of it. you would be such a perfect person for the game.
As someone who honestly doesnt find root-horror that scary, this was actually well done, I liked the thing in the basement. Id even go as far as saying that this one is much better than the Subject something something one, the mutant in the asylum (I think that was the same dev if Im not mistaken). This has nice atmosphere for being so short.
Awesome game loved everything about it especially the soundtrack and sound effects! Max should have had you beta test then you could have helped him with the story
I sure as F didn't forget about The Tailor. For whatever reason RU-vid seems to think I wanna watch that one over and over and over again. Same with Harthorn 🤷🏻♂️
A pity Max didn't stick it out and give this a proper ending with some lore. It was actually pretty good. I wouldn't call this a failed project. The atmosphere and ideas were great.
