I saw Attell at the Comedy Cellar a couple years ago and he absolutely MURDERED. Without a doubt one of the greatest of all time and I’d wager it’s because he never abandoned the clubs. No arena “comedy” show could ever touch the vibe of a small club in a basement in NYC.

I think the US is going through the same thing as the UK did about 15 years ago in regards to comedians. In the UK there was an explosion of mostly atrocious comedians that started selling out arenas off the back of comedy panel shows. Now in the US it's the same with the podcast scene. And no one else talks about a thriving comedy scene except the comedians involved. Easily 90% of the current podcast crop are absolutely atrocious also.

I saw so many up and comers there and some would come back, for the intimicy with the audience. Some gigs are like lightning in a bottle and a moment is shared between fans and performers in these venues you can never get at an arena. You cant describe the vibe you feel when all is well, the band is on form and the fans are losing their minds its tremendous to be apart of. Fascinating to witness. Im guessing Toms wife did the 19 sets at the Mason. I think thats amazing, a lot of work and probably a bit bigger than the place i worked but like rogan said. You gotta do the clubs. That advice works well for most performers.

Weird thought came to mind when he is talking about Segura. I think, because of how his life has gone and how he speaks on 2 bears, might have a major meltdown in the near future. And I'm betting it's when his little problem children develop real, dark behavior. The way he has said he only gives them a "slap on the wrist' for doing things that none of us would ever be ok with, is going to rapidly bite him in the ass. Wonder when in idk 8-10 years when his Porsche goes missing at night what will occur? But hey, just a thought

Just starting this but I immediately think about how those with the most to lose and understand it will get it. Bert and Tom have been insulated from stuff growing up. They can take those risks so it’s easy for them to lean BACK into some level of comfort they know.

I also think it has something to do with the rest of the entertainment industry being in the doldrums. Movies, tv and music just don’t hit the same. The consumption of movies, tv and music has lost its communal aspect. Concerts have gotten expensive and rapper shows aren’t worth the money to see live (too expensive and low production value). Comedy is reliable even if podcasting has taking a bite out of it. I think some comedians think they’re funnier than they actually are. They will be humbled eventually.

I went to a Jo koy show in my town. It was just at a theater and I had front row seats. So it was amazing for me. But I think even at big venues when you are in the back, it is about the energy. It’s about the energy. I can’t explain the feeling of being surrounded by so much laughter. It was a euphoric rush for me so I think I would have enjoyed it even if I was in the back.

This is not the case for all comedians, but typically once a comedian starts doing arenas (or even movies), it's the death rattle of their comedy career. More often than not, a comedian will disappear or be forgotten shortly following that decision. For example, All these comedians once they did arenas or jumped into comedy films their careers either instantly began to plummet or they blew up for a short period then faded off into obscurity. Dane Cook...GONE, Amy Schumer...GONE, Carlos Menstealia...GONE, Andrew Dice Clay...GONE, Jeff Foxworthy...GONE, Chris Rock...Basically Gone, Adam Sandler...Basically gone (Still making the occasional unfunny corny movie), Jim Carrey...GONE, and i could go on and on with the list!

Stand up comedy isnt funny 75 percent of the time. Honestly these podcast rarely make me laugh either. I think I watch out of habit at this point. Theo is still great. Shane Gillis is the best doing right now imo. But go watch Joe Rogans stand up and then try and tell me he is funny. He ain't.

I only really got to know these guys through this channel. I can "talk comedy" at the water cooler now. 😏 How'd you do that?! Lol. Now that's a great content creator.

Id say this for music too. Small spaces are way better for sound and intimacy with the crowd. Ive only seen comedy in clubs but Ive seen live music in all spaces and would much rather see a musical artist or band play in a smaller venue than a stadium or arena. I feel like the energy of the whole show and crowd "hot boxes" in a smaller setting.

If I have to look at a screen to see the comedian, I would rather just stay home and watch it there. These comics are just feeding their egos, that photo of Bert on stage with the crowd behind him says it all! I've never even seen a band where I've had to sit in the nose bleeds, there's no way I would do it for a comedy show!

There's a local club in Rochester that has booked Doug Stanhope, Pete Davidson, Dan Soder, Kinane, Normand and Morrill - people who are still real stand-up comics. They're $30-$45/ticket but i'll gladly pay that for any stand-up over $100 to see Bert in the minor league hockey arena (he came here last week)
