It’s because there was an original tv series of Armstrong and Miller with recurring characters in the episodes. This is a compilation, originally you’d only get to see one a week along with a lot of other regular or one off sketches.

Checking if there's enough space to comfortably reach back and hit whoever is in the backseat. Probably the kids. I wondered about it for a couple of minutes as well. I think it's meant to invoke the same motion as practice swings you do with an axe before you split the wood.

In the tent sketch and the car sketch his 'daughter' is called Jennifer but in the party sketch she's called Jessica.
