In this new episode of Sartorial Talks, we have the pleasure to share with you a beautiful film produced by the French Union of Bespoke Shoemakers. In this film, you'll recognise many well-known figures of the craft (like Pierre Corthay, Stephane Jimenez or Anthony Delos) but also upcoming big names and younger apprentices. This film shows to the world that this ancestral craft is still very well alive and that more and more young people wish to embrace it.

As an unlicensed Architect fresh out of school, I have been exposed to many bastardizations of traditions using modern technology. I appreciate that so much modern technology can be used in sartorial crafts but retain the heart that it traditionally has had. I admit I am quite surprised at the communities openness to this computerization. My designer side is excited to see what new innovations are achieved. I must admit I am happy to see so many modern artisans working with such respect to traditional crafts and I am truly excited to see the innovations that these artists and artisans come up with.

There is a magic that can only come through inspiration and love. Automation allows an incredible degree of consistency, but as we depend on computers more and more we begin to lose that spark of innovation. Our minds get lazy and fall into conformity. So happy to see these artisans and all the commenters on this channel. I wish you great success Devin. We need more beautiful buildings 💖

@@LiaAndrews Thank you very much Lia. I will do my best to make more than a few beautiful buildings 🙂. I’m hoping that tradition prevails. I’m glad to see more people like you and I in the world; appreciating tradition and loving the truly beautiful things. I am seeing more people reverting to hand-crafted artisanal things even within the Architecture world because of the love, and humanity, that computers cannot give. As mister Jacomet pointed out, and Charles Baudelaire stated, “we are trying to catch the permanent [beauty] in the transitory”.

I was a bit upset that you didn't upload lately, but with this gigantic work I see why you took your time. If I were 10 years younger and without the responsibilities I have now, I undboutly travel to France and start my journey as an shoemaker artisan. Felicitations á tous les persons qui a fait cette magnifique piece. Receive my hugs and blessings dears Hugo and Sonya.

Very happy to hear how this industry (trade) is evolving, and for the better. I like to see so many young people as well as "old" ones with zero reluctance to innovate. And above all, nicer shoes coming up.

This was beautifully done, thank you. I sold shoes in grad school 20 years ago and fell in love with the craft. It's wonderful to see a new generation taking up the tradition. I must admit...I have a very difficult time with fitting shoes, and find myself gravitating to the brands that still bother making shoes on a narrow last, and so I have limited options. It's now very apparent that I need to cure my boredom of traditional American styling by venturing into the world of bespoke shoes.

Watching, discovering and ideally learning from such crafts people is always inspiring and calming to know that true artists and craftsmen still exist. As a side note, introduction of technology can be a great asset and tool but without the traditional core training and experience the craftsman becomes the slave of the tool rather than the master of it.

Hello Hugo I have a question for you. Would you say Goodyear welting/ Blake stitching is a good choice when it comes to a pair of bespoke shoes?

Dear Tony, as far as I know, none of these are used in real bespoke shoemaking. Handwelting is used (ie: a handmade GY). Cheers, Hugo

I have become one of your most loyal followers and admire both of you and your style tremendously That being said, I do think Hugo, that the frames of your newer glasses are too pale. They make you look a bit washed out on camera. Maybe that isn't the case in real life. Just thought you might appreciate it as advice, not criticism. Every time you make a new video I learn something I never knew that I even wanted to know about. I have said it before, and I will say it again; your videos are now of greater quality than most documentaries, let alone RU-vid videos. And your storytelling ability is phenomenal. Thank you Hugo (and Sonia).

How do you reconcile Christian ethics and lifestyle with spending thousands of euros on clothes?
@SARTORIALTALKS
@SARTORIALTALKS 2 года назад
To answer you question, we are supporting the blood, sweat and tears of tireless artisans who are not at all rich, but whom are trying to survive. If we lose our artisans because no one will invest in their work---we lose part of our history and the ongoing story of our existence. Not everyone can invest in artisanal work and must buy from factories, but the people who can afford handmade work and will invest in these artisans are more inspiring in character than those investing in large luxury groups.
