Can we start introducing fines in the billions for every major security breach? Seriously, this might serve as an incentive for any conpany - not just AT&T - to secure my damn data.

Working in IT, I and all my coworkers dread whenever we have to call AT&T. One time late into a stressful night shift when calling their B2B support, my call was answered and all I could hear was... beach sounds. Kids playing, waves rolling in, and the occasional voice of someone who was working remotely who was either ignoring me or hadn't realized he had answered the call. I stayed on that call for the last hour of my shift and it's the one good interaction I ever had.

Prior to COVID --- there was a company who was a 3rd party administrator for ATT for the customer service. Even then, the stress level was very high. I remember times when some of their employees would get into serious fights outside at the end of the day. I've seen both security and the police called for these folks. And that was pre-COVID. AT&T is genuinely evil. I have lived in rural Mississippi most of my life. AT&T got a government contract to extend DSL lines into rural areas in my state. What they would do is go just far enough down a road to count for the contract, while giving the most bare minimum speeds and infrastructure. They stopped the lines at my neighbors house about 800 yards down thebroad from me so, me and anyone past me cannot get any sort of internet besides a hotspot or satellite. And, don't get me started on the absurd prices of the hotspot plans plus even if you pay the exuberant price they'll still throttle/ limit your area which results in my having full bars of 4G+ but somehow only pulling 2mbps download. Sorry for the rant.

Gas stations are doing the same. They have a Cash/Debit price and a credit card price. The credit card companies charge around 3% of the transaction cost. My wife and I just spent the last week helping my cousin get out of a serious data breach result due to these AT&T issues. Two things that I learned about AT&T from it that will forever keep me from being a customer of theirs: 1. If you are an AT&T internet customer, but NOT an AT&T wireless customer, you CANNOT add 2FA to your account using a mobile device. They actively block it. 2. When you are knee deep in credit repair and have frozen your credit as part of this, even if you are a current AT&T customer and need to purchase a new phone or hardware (for example switching your phone service to AT&T so you can finally get 2FA...), they will demand to run a credit report even though it was frozen at their request, due to their poor management.

A large portion of their customers have zero choice, and of the ones who do have a choice, it's often a choice between AT&T or another mega-corp that's just as bad. Customer trust doesn't matter when they hold a functional monopoly. Heck, even lawsuits fail to matter since they can just pass the cost on to the customer with comparative impunity...heck, it'll give the "competition" an excuse to raise their rates too.

This has chances to affect the economy, because in this capitalist economy, we need data to know who we should advertise stuff, and companies will sell this info like AT&T probably did. Even those like Apple who praise privacy do that (it's not a secret btw). This is one of the reasons that saying China is a communist country is false, they have an even bigger consumerism economy, and the biggest pillar of communism (workers rights) isn't even respected, if you ever visited gore websites or nsfw reddits, or watch those Apple Foxconn employees protesting you would know. Some of this goes back to the software development companies. Back in the 80s we created a couple Operating Systems focused on security. These greatly improved resilience to attack (a version of this is in Linux SE) but we are stuck with Windows and normal Linux. Because of breaches a my Big 4 firm we spent over $300M on a single security project but still didn’t have enough power in the company to move them off normal platforms to secure versions.

I can appreciate channels like this because I had no idea that AT&T had a data breach and so now I've made sure to change my password. Ironically, I just scheduled to swap out my Spectrum brand router for AT&T Fiber because I wanted the faster download speeds, so that sucks. Spectrum has always given me issues for years, though. For the longest time, it was the only ISP available in my area. I'm hoping AT&T Fiber isn't any worse. Admittedly, I've been using AT&T for my phone for 10 years or so now and never really had any issue with my phone's data or wifi so I've stuck with them over the years, but perhaps if AT&T's internet isn't good then I'll just get rid of it all and even swap phone providers.
