Most of my videos show garbage trucks out on the job actually picking up, but then there’s the odd video like this showing another aspect of waste collection. It’s not often anyone really sees garbage trucks pulling out of a yard, considering it often occurs in the early morning and not usually in populated areas either. Here is a different upload showing the machines leaving the Bankstown works depot in Greenacre. This is no doubt one of my favourite videos due to the fashion of departure..... a garbage truck convoy..... one of the best things I’ve ever seen! Bankstown was the first place I got to witness this, but I’ve since discovered a few other fleets with a similar departure method.
One morning years ago I passed the council depot around 4am and noticed the trucks had already left. On another occasion I rocked up around 3:15am, spotting a group of side loaders parked inside, but all trucks turned off and no drivers in sight. I waited around, figuring some time in the next 45 minutes I would see some action. From around 3:30am all the operators started arriving at the yard and one by one you could hear the ignition of each engine. At exactly 3:45am I heard the sound of an ACCO throttling towards the gates and out came the first truck... then another... then another... and another, until they were all gone.
The first clip shows basically the entire garbage fleet pulling out on a Thursday morning, the second clip was the first shot I took of the convoy on a Wednesday and the third clip looks inside the yard minutes before the take-off, which sequels in the fourth clip (sorry about the late start). Going further in the fifth clip we take a look at the trucks tearing along Hume Hwy and shooting off onto Stacey St. At the end of the video we see the former recycling trucks departing, which usually leave an hour after the garbos at 4:45am. A bunch of these loud ACCOs swinging out of a yard in the early morning is exactly what I like to think of when it comes to an Aussie residential fleet =]
