Another of my most recent captures is this video again from April just gone, taking place in Inner West Council located in Sydney, which is another LGA formed from state amalgamations in 2016. Also including the former council areas of Ashfield and Leichhardt, this particular action was captured in the former Marrickville area, which is made evident by the tall 140L Sulo2 rubbish bins. Things have changed a bit since I last videoed in this location, with the purchase of some new trucks, the commencement of PM collection shifts and the reintroduction of job and finish conditions. It almost appears as if the previous in-house operation at play with the former Leichhardt took precedence when the new council made a first stage move to streamline collections. So these days most of the weekly garbage pick up in the former Marrickville area gets done the evening prior, whilst recycling and garden waste continues to be collected in the morning. However, this differs from ex-Leichhardt which still contracts out recycling to URM and ex-Ashfield which has Cleanaway performing all collections, but perhaps in future each service across the entire area will be done by council works in a standard fashion.
After spending this Monday morning with a side loader in the Rockdale area, I stuffed around for the rest of the day killing time until mid afternoon came around for me to tackle my next videoing commitment. I cruised around a bit admiring part of this Tuesday collection zone with bins lined along the narrow footpaths and blocked by cars in small streets, plus the big clusters of unit 240Ls in other spots, all justifying the rear loader territory this Sydney area is. The PM crews kick off at 4pm and I aimed to see the trucks leaving the Sydenham depot at that time, but I took a wrong turn and missed it all which resulted in a detour that sucked. After this fail, my contact for this videoing mission informed me where they were working, which later got me following through the suburbs of Petersham, Lewisham and Dulwich Hill. First I quickly found an empty truck parked up, then a little further searching nearby had me locate the boys swiftly loading up the other truck. In one way this was an easy videoing experience, but at the same time I did some serious running trying to keep up at certain points, leaving me completely wrecked by time I finished up. Ridiculous to think I spent over 3 hours getting what’s in this video, but totally worth it =D
We start off in daylight during sunset with rear loader 9079, one of the existing 2015 model Bucher Ivecos originally sourced by Marrickville. For the second load in evening darkness the team swaps over into very young rear loader 9040, a 2020 model Garwood Hino, which I’m sure is an example of the general fleet moving forward. I wasn’t overly bothered about getting the UrBin on video as a previous post of mine covers them very well, but it was cool to get the big Maxipact on video for something different! Given the nature of this council task, the guys are able to hook in to get the job done quickly and go home early, thus they have an incentive to run between pick ups, move the bins with speed and work together as an efficient team. It’s refreshing to see rear loader action like this with a bit of pace and agility while collecting garbage, probably about as old school as residential collections can get these days. In future I’d love to get on with this kind of workplace and join an accelerated rear loader crew again, it would definitely make for an awesome change!
