Marrickville Garbage & Recycling

I’d had a slow morning finding trucks on this particular Tuesday three years ago, so an impulse decision had me making a long overdue return to Marrickville Council. I found myself having a look through the streets of Dulwich Hill for action, quickly spotting a high vis worker in a backstreet getting bins ready for quick pickup. Truck 9046 arrived shortly after, putting the full team of 3 men and machine together to knock off the remainder of that particular weekly garbage run. Upon finishing with the red bin guys, just across the road I found fortnightly recycling was yet to be collected, getting me on the brief lookout for truck 9901 and its crew working just a few streets away. I must admit this action can't beat the original stuff I took with the brighter and louder trucks, swift twin lifters handling garbage, the extra speed and motivation... I'm annoyed I didn't capture more of it all.
Down in this inner west location, the council performs all services itself, with a pure rear loader workforce due to the area it is. Around the time of videos the council was in the process of rolling out brand new bins to all properties, with the new red lid ones featured - never expected we’d see tall Sulo2 140Ls again! The trucks were only nearing a year old in this video, with the council upgrading during 2015 with a heap of these 20m UrBin Iveco units. Unfortunately, they basically look as boring as a garbage truck can be, unless the council has since added some nice livery. You’ll notice these come equipped with the enclosed tailgate and hopper curtains too, a very rare sight, also kind of annoying seeing it hides the packer. I hate to say I didn’t get any videos of the previous 6x4 rear loaders, which is a real shame given the Compaction Systems Iveco range in use, definitely some neat trucks.
Marrickville Council technically ceases to exist today, since amalgamation with Leichhardt and Ashfield to form Inner West Council. However, the existing in-house works, rear loader fleet and collection operations are still at play... so it’s still Marrickville waste services as far as I’m concerned. I actually worked at Marrickville for a very short period in 2013, even doing a shift on that same recycle truck I videoed way back in 2009! Too bad for me I started there just after they scrapped the “job finish” conditions, which was the incentive to go hard, get it done and go home. Working at the complete opposite pace to fill an 8 hour shift made it a different and torturing experience for me, but at least the guys in the video kept things moving, with thanks going to both friendly teams.

Still got a decent fleet going, Acco Urbins defiantly beat that Merc Urbin setup many councils are opting for these days. Loved how they have kept them fully white with the council fleet numbers and council name just on the cabs. That Garbage one just looked a bit awkward though without the visor, the visors really do suit them cause without they just don't look the part. I bet your stint at Marrickville would of been hectic getting a ride in that 07 Truck on Recycle, would of sounded beast just revving it a tad then letting go of the hand brake. I reckon your older videos from Marrickville are the icing on the cake anyway.

Yeh pretty much the whole 6x4 fleet is this equipment now, only some with/without visors, and yeh looked awkward alright... wtf is the go with the mix anyway?! They actually have a 4x2 Garwood/Iveco which I'd like to get, I did see it tipping greens when it was brand new. You dig the plain white bodies eh? I was hoping they'd at least have MARRICKVILLE COUNCIL WORKS slapped across in big black bold letters lol You know what was a fat let down for me with Marrickville, I only got to drive the tiny Isuzu rear loader on illegal dumps one day, never got behind the wheel of the ACCOs :( It was a full on flop of a position, get told by the agency that it was a driving job and I was like fuck yeh, more like fuck no in the end though... would've been better if it was still job finish and some driving involved, but it was only temporary anyway until Auburn kicked off a new annual budget that July :P

I went to the Marrickville area only recently to get green waste on video, but the truck I was hoping to see wasn't on the job so I didn't bother with it. On another note, you might be happy to know my next video is supposed to be Inner West garbage, which features one of the new Hinos =]

I was hoping to get the single axle Garwood Iveco rear loader, it would've joined the Marrickville fleet around the same time as all the UrBins in 2015, if you search for "Marrickville garbage truck" in Google Images it should pop up as one of the first photos. I saw it tipping green waste one day at Veolia so thought it might have replaced the single axle 2010 model Iveco that did greens previously, but there was also a medium size 4x2 Garwood Hino in the past that did dumped rubbish and clean-up, so it may have actually replaced that truck. Not sure if the Garwood/ACCO ever did greens fulltime, but if it did, I guess that was before the latest Hinos came in and/or prior to the trucks being double shifted.

@@AussieGarbo the iveco garwood did my garbage for about a month and then went back to the urbins. innerwest sold some urbins to get some hinos. the greens in my area all gets done by a hino, haven’t seen any ivecos doing greens for a while. the short video on my channel features the iveco garwood, didn’t know it did clean up tho?!

Well, there is still Sydney, Woollahra, Waverley,Leichhardt and Botany Bay that are only rear loaders. Every inner west council has a majority of rear loaders because of the tight streets. The only exemption is Randwick, who thought, it would be a good idea, to send full size side loaders trough there.

8080 is Better Truck :P Good footage Mitch glad to know what’s being used in Marickville now days. Those enclosed hoppers are good cause you can keep loading them up but shit at the same time cause it stinks and you can’t throw shit past plastic shields. Always though that these trucks would be better off with a proper spill mat instead of the steel bar across the Hoppe. So many pros and cons with the Hopper set up. Good Video 😊

Thank you for your upload this week, saw these trucks at Iveco when they were brand new back when I had my Canada Bay truck there for a service due to the maxi brake coming on at random times, this video made me feel like I was back in Canada Bay and I do believe and you'd know yourself in Willoughby these places should still be done by RL today as there is only a handful of streets I'd consider SL worthy material. Even Parramatta Council through my experiences a lot of work these days shouldn't be handled with one arm trucks, just easier to get the 3 man crew to knock the whole street off in 1 single sweep. I like the new trucks, pointless having all the fancy slogans and pictures on it when you still tip bins with wrong material and disregard the correct placement for bins, plain Jane is the way to go tbh. Can't beat a Urbin look at the thing go, its at home with its work unlike SPAK, the 11 minutes would be spent watching it do the first job haha. I have seen a side loader with that same council sticker on the door I'm sure it was a Iveco too not a Volvo used to see it on the M4 heading somewhere and I could never depict the council name but now as seeing these trucks on other occasions it did click that it was Marrickville, but stuff that doing side loader in some of those streets, Jorden told me his experience with you in Willoughby and no thanks haha. Cheers.

@@annoyedlemon 19 Side Loaders man do Parramatta sometimes 20, my point is there should be more RLs because some of the streets I've done is not worthy at all being done by a side loader, whats the point me hopping out every 3 bins and nearly smashing cars with the arm because bins are practically touching the car. Cheers.
@AussieGarbo
@AussieGarbo 5 лет назад
Yeh I agree, much more practical to send a rear loader crew through certain areas, should be the case in some places sure. It seems the truck type chosen comes down to cost in the end... why pay 3 guys to do a job when you can pay 1 guy and some overtime to get the same work done. Then there's the WHS side of the argument, even though the driver has to keep getting in and out and stuffs around more just emptying the bins. Yeh fair point about the signage I guess, but I still always like some kind of colour on the side for some excitement :D Interesting about the side loader if true, first I've heard of it, but perhaps a trial.

It’s nice to see some fresh footage of the operations at Marrickville especially these large rear loaders, I enjoyed the video :D. It’s a shame that Marrickville don’t apply any signage or colour other than white to their trucks it would look much better. I wonder what will happen if a new contract arises for the new amalgamated council, hopefully they purchase a mix of rear and side loaders so rear loaders and continue collecting Marrickville as they are much better suited. Do you know what the deal with Sulo 2 is, do Sulo still make that model or lids for Sulo 2 bins?
@AussieGarbo
@AussieGarbo 5 лет назад
It's nice to be able to post some fresh footage =] They did put a little sticker on the trucks since I videoed, something along the lines of "penalty rates are awarded to those who blah blah blah"... pretty random actually, in now way making the truck look cool haha I have a suspicion they might pull all operations inhouse down the track, or just contract out a certain segment, or who bloody knows really?! They'll always need rear loaders in that region, in some spots using a side arm would be impossible, same deal with the Leichhardt area, Ashfield all pretty well the same too. I can't really tell you exactly what the deal is with the Sulo 2 bins... I recall being told, but I've forgotten, and hope someone can get on here and refresh the story for both you and myself :P

Good work. These trucks sure look boring and the old yellow ones where far more interesting. Are there any more of the yellow trucks left in the fleet? These twin lifters where always cool to watch, are there any more cities that have them. I think, with the old signage, these trucks would look better. These guys moved quite fast, but nothing can beat the other recycling crew you filmed 9 years ago. This 8 hour limit is stupid. If a worker does his thing good and fast, i would have no problem, that he can go home early and still gets paid for 8 hours. Do you know why Sulo out of nowhere began producing these Sulo 2 again. Do they only roll out new garbage bins or do they also replace the recycling bins? Hopefully Sulo will produce the 240 Liter Sulo 2 again in the future. Last question, does Marickville have a green waste bin or not?
@AussieGarbo
@AussieGarbo 5 лет назад
There were 2 yellow trucks when I was working there in 2013, but from memory both of those were first to go when these new ones came in - one had twin lifters on a garbage run and the other had a wide comb lifter for greens. Botany Bay is the only council still using twin lifters in Sydney, although URM might have 1 working in City of Sydney I think, unless it's a 660L rotary lifter which looks similar. The guys doing garbage here went pretty well - noting I bet they would've moved faster if they had the incentive to do so! They scrapped the "job finish" condition due to safety concerns, where guys were rushing and getting injured, which does have some merit, but at the same time maintaining the short workload and increasing the shift by hours is stupid, potentially being negative in other ways. Not 100% sure what the go is with the Sulo 2 bins, I can't recall if it was special request, or something about the council producing their own with Sulo's permission. The recycling bins were also replaced, but they rolled out 240L Sulos with the G-mould lid. Yes indeed Marrickville has a greens bin, varying in 140L and 240L in size - I understand the council also recently rolled out new green lidded bins, including the tall Sulo2 140L! :O

@@AussieGarbo hey mate apologies for random comment. I have been out of job for fair while due to covid and seen a few waste runner jobs advertised. Is this what a waste runner is/does? Thanks mate :)
@AussieGarbo
@AussieGarbo 4 года назад
@@jasongiovanni9545 Yes mate this is an example of what a waste runner does, more often than not it will involve a rear loader like this truck. Sometimes it may involve working around side loaders where you are moving bins from the kerb or unit properties onto the road so they are presented properly for collection truck drivers. Other rear loader duties of a waste runner may involve collecting kerbside bulk/hard waste clean-up or emptying larger "bulk bins" instead of these smaller wheelie bins from individual houses. The types of tasks vary a fair bit depending on where the employment is located, some are also fairly easygoing and others can be physically demanding. Good luck if you pursue the job! =]
