We take a look at one of the most effective, versatile sweeps in BJJ/jiu-jitsu, sumi gaeshi. A core skill in both gi and no gi grappling, sumi gaeshi needs a few key elements to work well. And as with most techniques, it helps to know at the outset exactly what you're trying to accomplish with it...

I like the toe detail to drive. It definitely helped the completion of my butterfly sweep. Not always successful but much better. I also like how we hide our underhook :). Thanks Brian.

Love it Prof Glick 🙏 Was wondering when would you use your "pushing" leg, i.e., the left leg in the video, on your opponent? Would you use it to off balance them when they post their leg? Thanks Vincent

You can use that leg to offset their balance for some sumi/elevator variations (as in the guillotine video here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hmkuq_aOohY.html), but the key is to get it into position as a drive leg for when you need to generate power in the sweep 👍

Hello Mr. Glick. I am wondering, do you have a method for forcing opponents to have to pass from the knees when in a butterfly/seated guard? I guess I always end up there reactively from a side control escape situation, and when I do try sitting straight to butterfly my opponent typically tries standing forms of passing. Thanks for your time if you read this :)

There’s no sure-fire way to *make* someone pass from the knees. BUT we like to create a credible threat - like ashi garami attacks - to make it more appealing for a partner to drop to knees when passing. Keep off balancing and threatening from seated vs standing and you’ll see results 👍🏼

What is the purpose of calling this a “Sumi Gaeshi” when the term applies to both sitting sweeps and standing sweeps (in Judo). How does this clarify anything? Wouldn’t it be more clear to just call it a Butterfly Sweep since everyone knows exactly what this already and it provides additional information by letting us know it is a sitting sweep? I understand the Japanese names allow someone to trace BJJ back to Judo, but if anyone wanted to know that history they could simply look it up. I’m just super confused about re-naming techniques and concepts away from universally understood names over to names that are more confusing or less descriptive.

Good question. We call it sumi gaeshi to distinguish it from other sorts of sweeps from the butterfly guard. It shares characteristics (like trapping an arm, elevator hook, etc.) with the throw of the same name from standing so they’re both called sumi gaeshi. It’s not so much that the name ties it to roots in judo (although it does), but that the name for this set of movements actually already existed and the mechanics work the same. Using names that are specific rather than generic lets us draw finer distinctions so we can use the right tool for the right job. Hope this helps.
