Honestly, I was following "Skip" and Fowlkes @ Fresno during this era so I didn't know anything about Herren. The only thing I can say is that I'm glad he's clean and alive/around for his wife & children.
Absolute legend here in Massachusetts, saw him personally at Durfee and he played with my cousin at BC...his game was insane...glad he turned it around
also, I've found an article on an Italian newspaper where he says that he wants to apologize to the city of Bologna (where he played) for how he behaved while he was there. Owning up to your mistakes is always a good sign
I got to connect with him through Facebook a year ago. We had a really good conversation about addiction. I was dealing with some addiction too throughout my time in college I can genuinely say that I am sobered and haven't faced my addiction as hard as I was when I was in college a year ago. I want to credit some of that to him we met in Dallas and were able to talk face-to-face about it and even find some coping mechanisms for me. He's far from a psychiatrist or a therapist but he is a great guy. Glad to see he turned his life around
Much respect to him for overcoming his addiction and continued prayers that he stays clean. I think his biggest stunt was staying in state to attend college. Maybe if he went out of state the first time around things could have been different.
He spoke at the gym in my small town of 8000 about drugs and his story. They put his story in the local paper also , good video he's a long forgotten story of a baller he slipped but ended up winning in life after all. Say no to drugs kids.
props to him for changing his ways. Addiction is a tough trial and is a terrible thing to experience in your life. He may have been a "bust" basketball wise but he seems to be a potentially positive influence on many young people now
I thought about Chris while watching another video and wanted to mention him. He came and spoke at my high school my freshman or sophomore year (2010/2011) and still remember his story and I obviously had talks about drugs and all that before this but I was 14/15 at this point and it opened me up to addiction effecting an athlete and the lows someone can go to just to satisfy their addiction. I went from not knowing him to looking him up after and gaining respect for his game and him as a man and having a discussion I can still lean on almost 10 years later. Much love to Chris Herren and JC, it’s more than just basketball
Keep em comin stunted. Herren was a bad man. Can't forget a mcdonald's all american in a cold era. Fall river dreams is a hell of a book and so is basketball junkie, his companion piece.
He was tough! Hard nose! He was skilled! He was better than Kareem Reed! Kareem Reed was my man!! But one and done especially at that time hell no!!! That’s wasn’t even an option back then!!He was a good but he wasn’t white Chocolate ! I played with White chocolate in college and he was better!
Speaking from experience myself drug addiction is very very hard and sad it takes everything from you every opportunity you have everything you work for it slowly strips everything and anybody that matters away, also the way you broke down addiction is spot on you don't really want to do anything unless you're high cuz you feel like it'll be better that way so you get dependent on it and you basically lie to yourself and tell yourself everything's going to be okay, reality is that's just a quick high afterwards all your problems are still there and only person you're fooling is yourself I've been clean now for 2 years but I had a 10-year battle with addiction and it took every opportunity away from me and my family and friends anybody important in my life didn't want nothing to do with me it's so sad that he fell into that as well and missed out on possibly a really good career if he would have just kept stay clean I'm glad he turned his life around and is doing good enable to be there for his son and help his son out it's good and inspiring to hear this story thank you for the content man I like your channel I started watching a couple months ago and I always get excited when I see that you drop a new video.
Stunted growth I think is geared more towards the guys who had the tools to be great in the NBA, but they're actions, injuries, other scenarios caused them to stay at the bottom and never make the top. Harden has some stunted growth as far as maturity, but he's one of the hottest commodities in the NBA. He still has awhile before he's out of the league as well.
You all should watch his documentary. He was hell a fun to watch at UNLV, sorry meant Fresno. Dude had a crazy motor. Imagine without his addiction. But God had another path for him.
Hadn’t watched yet..... But Man!!!! I remember his story. But he could HOOP!!!!! I think if not for the Drugs. Him going to Boston he could have been a Hall of Famer....... He was always wit Brothers hoop’n and still standing out. He wasn’t at BYU, Utah, or even Gonzaga..... back then Gonzaga....... Stunted you know what I mean. I’m interested to see if you covered how bad his drug addiction really was.
This is my all time favorite story about a guy who has somehow figured out a way to live a life more admirable than his considerable Bball skills might have lead him to had he not succumb to his addiction. This guy flat out could play. It is crushing to think about what he could have done in college and the NBA had things go otherwise. The only limiting aspect to his game was his size. He was raw energy, quick, had a great shot, and had Larry Bird or Magic court vision. He was that good, and the game lost teams of great footage to his addiction. But watch this video or the 30 for 30 “Unguarded” and you may conclude, as I definitely do, that the illustrious career Herron would have had on the court has been superseded by what he has done off it. As a man this guy should be as well known and respected as Kobe and MJ.
@Stunted Growth Ayeee bro, You should actually do Kareem Reid “The Best Kept Secret” Great NYC point guard and someone I grew up looking up to along with Shamm 💯💯💯
Chris Herren like Jason Williams from Duke, had the injury not happened to Jason Williams nor the drug addiction happened to Chris Herren, both of them would have been top 5 point guards in the NBA for over half a decade. Both would have been multiple time all stars, there's no doubt in my mind about that. Herren wasn't as explosive, crafty or as strong as Williams but he could shoot as good as any point guard up to Steve Nash, he could handle the ball well and had great point guard instincts. He also could finish in the lane well and create open shots for himself and teammates. He also could play either half court or fast break basketball. Glad he turned his life around and is just moving forward.
He gave a great motivational speech at my high school back in like... 2014 or so too bad my school then pushed the message way too hard and it took less than a day for it to turn into a joke damn shame, but upper middle class teenagers are assholes
I've seen his story and his motivational testimonies many times on RU-vid. He's an inspiration, even to me when I was going through depression. I recommend everyone watch him speak and tell his story. Salute! 💯
Chris lived in the city next to mine he was legend in the city. Drugs are and have been a serious issue in our area. So many potential pro athletes in the area fell in the trap. Sad what he got into, glad he changed his life for the better.
Chris Herren is a hero for people suffering with that sickness and a role model for fathers or fathers to be that want to change their life for their kids or change to get ready to be a father and live a better more happy and healthy life
This is the one I've been waiting for, JC. He's a local legend in New England, you did a fantastic job summing up his sad path. Now I'll just wait for you to do Yinka Dare, every fan's favorite running joke of the mid 90s.
@@stuntedgrowth here's one of my favorite basketball jokes, about Yinka going into the 1998 season, after it took him three full seasons to register his first assist, and finished 97 with a whopping 3 assists: "If John Stockton averages 11 assists and retires in 2000, he will lose his all time assist lead to Dare in the year 14,874 AD." The fact that a scout did the math on that still cracks me up.
@@kevinwillette5161 lmao Ayo that story is priceless 😂😂 and yeah I had to shout out yinka. Idc what city you're from, imo you have to rep your local teams a little bit. In my case, gotta rep georgetown and them, even though they're not what they used to be haha
This dude is my hero!!! Got to talk to this guy. Been an addict, been to prison, clean for 2 years now and just started really hooping again after about a year off. Prison saved my life and helped me find my love for the game again. Only white-boy aloud to play on the "big-dog" court while I was locked up. Kinda helps when you're 6 foot 8 250 pounds with a game like Dirk but nonetheless keep it up my dude. Channel is awesome and actually inspires me in more ways then one. Thank you for that. Keep it up
Just got wind of your channel earlier this week and I've been binging it. I love your introspective way you tell the story. Much appreciated. I'm a native New Yorker and almost all the players you've covered I remember in my younger days. Good memories and stories. When that book drops i'll cop on day 1. Also have you done a story on Coach Tark? Seems as if in those days his players loved playing for him despite NCAA issues.
I really respect how you opened this up brotha. “Junkie - the most character-crushing word to describe addiction. Aren’t we all, then, addicted to something? The only difference is yours or my addiction may have not caused us to.......” - So many people in athletics have zero sensitivity to the struggles of addicts and are super f’ing quick to judgment and/or total dismissal. You didn’t take that route. Mad respect for that. 💯
Chris Herren’s basketball career and journey is an unbelievable story. His ESPN 30 for 30 is one of my all time favorites. I’m glad that he’s doing well and helping others with his experience.
Good content-I played against him and his older brother back in high school-beasts-they both talked sh-t but could back it up-I see you included pics of Chris’ son who played at BC also. Continued sobriety and success. Again this was great to see.
